UK earthquake risk MAPPED: Could YOUR town be struck by a DEVASTATING QUAKE?
The 4.7 earthquake struck Swansea in south Wales yesterday afternoon, sparking an evacuation at a Swansea University campus and shaking buildings across England and Wales. Last year an expert warned Express.co.uk the Welsh border region was especially vulnerable to earthquakes, as well as a number of other areas. An earthquake as high as 6.1 on the Richter Scale has hit Great Britain in the past and David Galloway of the British Geological Society said it could happen again. The seismologist told Express.co.uk in January 2017: “There are 200 earthquakes [in the UK] every year. Only two per month are of a reasonable size felt by people on the street.“The largest earthquake we could get is 6.1. That’s the largest we got in 1931.”

The 1931 Dogger Bank earthquake caused damage across the UK - as well as the deaths of two people. Striking off the coast of the east of England, it saw chimneys fall off roofs, cliffs collapse, church spires twist and the head of a waxwork in London’s Madame Tussauds fall off.
It also sent a small tsunami wave towards England, where it caused no damage. In terms of destruction caused, however, the most deadly earthquake to strike the UK occurred in Colchester in 1884. More than 1,250 buildings were damage across Essex and a child was killed as large waves damaged boats at the coast.
Mr Galloway warned of the impact of a large earthquake in a UK city.He said: “If [something on the scale of the 1931 quake] were to happen in a heavily populated area like Manchester or Liverpool, quite a lot of damage could occur.”An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale could cause a lot of damage in very populated areas, according to the University of Michigan.
Most UK earthquake action is in north-west Scotland, the Welsh border areas and north Wales
David Galloway, British Geological Society
Mr Galloway also pinpointed specific areas of the UK which are more susceptible to earthquakes than others. He said: “Most of the action is in north-west Scotland, the Welsh border areas and north Wales.
“There used to be more in the central midlands due to the mines sparking earthquakes but because the coal industry is almost dead this has stopped.”Other areas in Britain and Ireland, such as the east of England and the entire island of Ireland, experience very few earthquakes.

UK Flooding: Yorkshire resident breaks down after flood devastation left her homeless and jobless
A victim of the Yorkshire floods wept as she revealed how she's lost her home and business in the devastating deluge.
Pam Webb, from Fishlake, near Doncaster, found her home and luxury spa in the village submerged in water and has since learned her insurance will not cover the damage.
Stricken residents have been warned to expect further heartache as more 'danger to life' flood warnings have been issued by the Met Office for later this week.
Ms Webb sobbed: My insurance company have excluded flood from my policy.
I feel really selfish in saying this and I hope that other people aren't in this boat but I've lost my home and my business and my livelihood that I've worked so hard for.
And the girls who worked for me, or worked with me, it's their livelihoods as well. And a lot of them are only young. Some of them have got young families and I've tried to look after them the best I can.
Fishlake has never flooded in 100 years so my, if you want to say, anger is... why has it now flooded? You know, it's happened so we need to now establish why and how and who should be accountable.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair an emergency cobra meeting today to discuss the government's response to the flooding.
Around half the 700 residents of Fishlake left the village as the River Don burst its banks last week.

UK: LONDON: 3 YOUNG TOURISTS DIE IN HOUSE FIRE
English/Nat
In a tragic end to a British holiday, three young tourists, believed to be from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand were killed when a fire raced through their house, while they were sleeping.
Nine other people managed to escape the blaze which broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.
There were at least twelve people sleeping in this East London house when the blaze broke out just before 0700 (GMT) on Sunday morning.
The flames ripped through the terraced home giving the people inside little time to escape.
Firefighters raced to the house but were unable to save the three victims - all are believed to be tourists from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The charred bodies of two men and a woman were found in the middle and back bedrooms.
Nine managed to flee before firefighters arrived.
Two of those jumped to safety from a first floor window - they were rushed to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.
One was also treated for an ankle injury.
A fire officer was also treated for minor burns on his arm.
Witnesses say the flames ripped through the home with incredible force.
They say the fire took hold quickly and there was little they could do.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
When we came outside it just come roaring out of the front window of number six and the window's just exploded and the fire brigade came and told us that the tragedy had happened.
SUPER CAPTION: Frances Dawson, Neighbour
Fire officers sifted through the charred remains trying to piece together what sparked the blaze.
At this stage, the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Early investigations indicate the blaze began in the kitchen.
A fire brigade spokesman said there had been a party at the house, and a number of people stayed overnight.
Many of the people in the house were also believed to be foreigners.
Neighbours are still shocked at the tragedy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They were really nice people, they were like young students you know, really nice people. They were friendly and on Friday they came around and told us that on Saturday they were going to have a party - do we mind, and that they're not going to make a lot of noise. So, you know, we just thought student party, you know, but we didn't imagine anything like this was going to happen.
SUPER CAPTION: Frances Dawson, Neighbour
It's understood some of the people were due to fly home on Sunday but it is unsure if that includes the victims.
Fire officers are continuing to interview witnesses and friends of the victims.
Fire officers say nearby houses were lucky to escape the blaze, however neighbours have been ordered out of their homes until safety checks were completed.
