Devil's Backbone - Harbour Island Entrance
2015 #07 Devils backbone / Visit to Preachers Cave, Eleuthera Bahamas
Details about of Westbound trip over the Devil's Backbone primarily of interest to sailors who wish to make the trip without at a Pilot. Of general interest at midway through video - a visit to Preacher's Cave in North Eleuthera.
Devils Back Bone, Eleuthera Bahamas
Navigating the Devils Back Bone in Eleuthera Bahamas, between Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. It is recommended that a pilot be hired to transit this area, as the shoals and reefs are very plenteous and close together. Our 6' 9' draft is risky business, but on the way back, we were able to handle it on our own.

Navigating the DEVIL'S BACKBONE ... Without A Pilot! (MJ Sailing - EP 59)
Just north of Eleuthera is a treacherous channel known as the Devil's Backbone...full of coral and shifting sand, making it a dangerous place to navigate.

This had been on my list of places I wanted to sail ever since reading about Bumfuzzle's passage through in 2004. It is recommended you hire a pilot (at $100 each way) to help you get through if it is your first time, but we wanted to see if we could make it through on our own.
Since the Devil's Backbone drops out at Harbour Island (a very elite spot of Eleuthera), there are plenty of mega yachts transiting this path each day. And since these mega yachts also transmit their position on AIS, we were able to mark a path on our chart plotter, mapping exactly where they had been so we could follow the same route.
Cheers from the Bahamas!

Bahamas Sailing; Navigating through Devil's Backbone (Calico Skies Sailing Ep. 19)
After much planning we finally complete the passage through the notoriously tricky Devil's Backbone reef and arrive at a beautiful secluded beach north of Harbour Island, Eleuthera. We are being extra cautious as we opted to tackle the reef without the aid of a pilot, using our charts in conjunction with our eyes to read the color of the water in order to differentiate between reef and deep water.
A tropical paradise awaits us on the other side and immediate plans include plenty of time in the water and on the beach.

The greatest anchor of all time:
This episode is part 3 of our car tour across the Island of Eleuthera Bahamas away from our Leopard 39 catamaran. We see a place called the cliffs, tour cathedral cave, and try to eat some crab caught from Rock Sound.
Our sailing lifestyle isn't always easy. When we try to cook up some crab on our Leopard 39 Cruising catamaran we find that it's not always easy the first time. However, we found Eleuthera to be an inviting island. Even though Dean has a few a few things to get off his chest about Cathedral Cave Bahamas.
Danielle and Dean sold their home in suburbia with the plans of moving to a sailboat and sailing the Caribbean. As a test to see how their businesses run from a remote location, they moved to a cabin in the woods of northern Wisconsin. They enjoyed living there so much, the test run turned into two years of hiking, fishing, hunting, and outdoor fun.. Now, they're on their way to an adventure at sea. Along with enjoying their ups and downs on the waves, you can follow along as Dean takes on the challenge of catching major fish species and Danielle explores the world of beauty from the perspective of different cultures.

Hatchet Bay Cave Eleuthera, Bahamas(Episode 16)
A tour of the Hatchet Bay Cave in Eleuthera. Some of the carvings on the walls of the cave are from the 1800's.
About us: Our transition from working, owning a home and trying to enjoy life to living our dream of sailing the world. We moved on board our sailboat 1968 Tartan 34C in 2016 and set sail shortly afterwards. We began our trip down the ICW to the Bahamas where we plan on island hopping and see where the wind takes us.

Devil's Backbone, Spanish Wells
Nick and I went patrolling for some lunch around Devil's Backbone reef today. Regrettably the water was slightly murky and the camera fogged up, but the reef was gorgeous and full of life. He eventually speared a snapper, but only one prong went in and it got away; so we came back with some white conch.

Exploring Eleuthera Bahamas | Ep 18
This episode highlights the best & the most beautiful spots we visited in Eleuthera. Located in the Central Bahamas, Eleuthera is a long island reaching 180km long but in some points only 1.6km wide!
The awe-inspiring Glass Window Bridge (which collapsed in a big storm in 2018) showcases the duality of life on the island of Eleuthera with the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean on one side & the protected, shallow waters of the Great Bahama Bank on the other.
We loved Eleuthera's wild & rugged beauty as well as the friendly & quiet island vibes as it seemed to be largely off the beaten tourist path. It's like it was set back in time & it was so refreshing to experience. One of the reasons for this might be that there are virtually no anchorages for sail or motor vessels on the East Coast of Eleuthera (apart from Harbour Island but you have to navigate the Devil's Backbone to get there & just the name freaked us out!) & very limited anchorages on the West Coast. As cold fronts continued to roll of the continental USA & over to the Bahamas it was imperative to stay vigilant about the weather & we did have to negotiate the ridiculously narrow & treachorous cut to access Hatchet Bay to ride out some bad weather.
In this episode we chat to Andrew, a Bahamian local who tells us first hand what it was like when the Glass Window Bridge collapsed & we tell you how we really feel about arriving at a remote & beautiful beach covered with plastic & washed up debris.
It's a goodie!
Thanks for watching :)
