It had been a long time dream for me to conquer the Devils Staircase found in the foothills of Horton Plains. I was overjoyed when my friend Chamara came up with the idea. One fine morning we set out from Diyagama to Ohiya through Horton Plains. We stopped by in one of those small boutiques near Ohiya Railway station to quench our thirst and fill our hungry stomachs so that we could cope with the extreme conditions. After that we set out to the Ohiya - Kalupahana route which is known to be one of the remotest routes in Sri Lanka. We didn't realize how disconnected it was from the outer world until we had gone halfway through. There was no phone signal and there were no signs of people either. The 26Km trail goes through tea plantations belonging to Udaweriya Estate starting from Ohiya and ending at Kalupahana, Belihul Oya near the Bambarakanda falls - Sri Lanka's highest waterfall. It was a journey of a lifetime. The route took us through the foothills of Mini World's End of Horton Plains. The scenery extending across the mountains was amazing and similar to that visible from World's end but at a lower altitude and a different perspective. It is a route with a perfect setup for enduro riding, adventure and exploring.

Around the world are several natural and man-made formations that have earned the name 'the Devil's Staircase'. Among them Sri Lanka has one of the most dangerous. This famous route is a 14km long trail of sharp zig-zag twists that are extremely steep and difficult, but quite thrilling to travel. The trail begins from Horton Plains road in beautiful Ohiya passes through tea estates to the region of Kalupahana on the A4 Main Road.

Important Tips:

1. Start as early as possible.
2. The road is much rough and harder than you think. So take a good 4x4 vehicle with good ground clearance, excellent tires and superb brakes.
3. Keep 2 spare wheels and other basics including Engine Oil, Brake Fluid, Coolant etc... and a tool set.
4. Make sure to carry enough water.
5. Leave only tire marks and foot prints. Enjoy responsibly.

It is much closer to the Horton Plains National Park.The picturesque Colombo -Badulla Railyway runs through Ohiya. Ohiya is in the Welimada Divisional Secretariat Division and the Grama Niladhari Division number is 62A.

Ohiya is one of the most scenic places in Sri Lanka. On a clear day the view from the Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch extends up to the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

This is our first journey with wagon like this type. Most people say that, Don't go, Can't go, Need a 4WD , and More. All are given negative comment.
Last 10th of January we went that most terrible and famous road from Ohiya to Kaluphana. We bring extra fuels, engine oil , extra spare wheel and food and water. And some biscuit for giving to poor children who live in that rural plantation area.one of most beautiful area of Sri Lanka we found in that journey. its awesome.
When we travel, face some difficulties.
However we finished safely.

කළුපහන සිට බඹරකන්ද දිය ඇල්ල පසුකරගෙන යකාගෙ පඩිපෙළ ලෙස හඳුන්වන මාර්ගය හරහා ඔහිය දක්වා සංචාරය ඉතාමත්ම සිත්ගන්නා සුළු එකක්. මෙය ඉතා අසීරු ගමනක් වුනත් කිසිදා අමතක නොවන ගමනක් වනු නොඅනුමානයි. ඔබ සොබාදහමට ඇලුම් කරන්නෙකු නම් මෙය ජීවිතයේ එක් වරක් හෝ යායුතු ගමනක්.
මේ ගමනේ ආරම්භය වන්නේ කොළඹ-බදුල්ල මාර්ගයේ කළුපහන ප්‍රදේශයෙන්. එතැන් සිට ඔහිය දක්වා මුළු දුර කි.මී 23ක්. නමුත් ගමන අතරමගදී හමුවන දුෂ්කර කෙටි මාර්ගයක පැමිණීමෙන් මුලු දුර කි.මී 14ක් දකවා අඩුකරගත හැකියි.
