Devizes Millennium White Horse & Caen hill locks 2015
Short flyover video of The Millennium White horse & Caen hill locks during August 2015
Wiltshire - Avebury, Silbury, West Kennet pre-historic history, White Horses etc
White Horses, Stone Circles, Burial Chambers......why would you want to visit this stuff?
.....well partly because it is our history but also because it takes you off the route that every tourist takes and shows you something off the beaten track !
Wiltshire has many historic and prehistoric sites like Stonehenge but the area around Avebury is particularly interesting. Avebury itself has a large number of standing stones and the circle of earthworks around the village is the largest in Europe - it was built 5500 years ago.
Silbury Hill is just a mile away and is the largest man-made hill in Europe, built for we know not what, 3500 years ago.
West Kennet Long Barrow is close by, just a 15 minute walk across the fields and is an impressive burial chamber - again 5500 years old.
Wiltshire's White Horses were carved into the chalk hillside - mostly 200-350 years ago usually to commemorate something or just to show off!
The Devizes White Horse is the last to be cut - for the Millennium and the Uffington White Horse, nearby in Oxfordshire, is the oldest and thought to have been cut about 3500 years ago and is only completely visible from above - spooky !!
So a day out to see these iconic Wiltshire areas of interest will take you into beautiful villages and through the beautiful Marlborough and Berkshire Downs (Hills) - an area that you would not have seen had you just visited the locations where you can expect to see throngs of other tourists!!
A big part of what I like to see is to show people the things that are on their bucket list and then to show them the places they know nothing about but which I know will delight!
A map showing the locations and possible route to follow is here -
Why A Military Chinook Was Called In To Conserve This 'White Horse' | Forces TV
More:
The military's Joint Helicopter Command unit has been called in to restore a 200-year-old icon of the Wiltshire landscape. The Alton Barnes White Horse has presided over the hills there since its creation by a farmer in 1812, and local residents in Wiltshire decided it needed some restoration. The military was called in to help transport the 46 tonnes of chalk needed for the job.

British Bronze Age / Ancient History Documentary
How did people live in the Bronze Age? In this film you can learn about the Bell Beaker folk who came to Britain around 2500 BC and brought metallurgy skills with them - they were first to work gold, tin or copper in Britain and they were the first to trade valuable foreign goods such as glass beads from the Mediterranean and Amber jewellery from the Baltic.
The British Beaker folk has strong genetic ties to the Beaker folk of the lower Rhine in Holland who were themselves related to the people of the Single Grave Culture - a variant of the Corded Ware culture which was evidently the source of most of the subsequent Indo-European cultures of the world. Genetics and archaeology show how the Bell Beaker and Corded Ware people were related to the Proto-Indo-European Yamnaya people of the Russian steppes - and how the Neolithic Kurgan burial mounds from Russia were the model for the early round barrows that the Bell Beaker folk of the Wessex culture in England built for their dead. I look at the amazing finds from such burial mounds in England - mainly the rich hoards from the graves near Stonehenge, which are kept in the Wiltshire museum in Devizes. This video also shows the connection of Bronze Age Britain to the Battle Axe culture of Scandinavia via the Amber trade routes.

Scones amongst the Stones || Stone henge and Avebury || England Travel Diary
We finally got around to visiting the English Icon of Stone Henge. Dale, Becka, Chris and I hired a CityCar and took a drive over to Wiltshire for the day. We visited the stones and learnt about the Neo-lithic people of that age. It was a bit cold and windy, but the sun was shining and well worth the effort. After we left Stone henge we drove further north to Avebury to visit the Avebury Stone circle. These stones were spaced further apart and you could walk within them at not cost. They are the same age as Stone Henge but are not sculpted or stacked. We had made ourselves lunch and snacks for the day and decided that within a stone circle is a grand old place for a spot of tea and scones (with clotted cream and jam of course). Our last stop was at Salisbury Cathedral, but alas it was closed when we arrived, so we enjoyed the architecture of the exterior instead.
Also, my apologies for constantly saying Avebury incorrectly, for some reason I kept adding an extra 's' to its name. Oops
