Drake's Trail Cycle Ride
Drake's Trail - 21 miles from Tavistock to Plymouth. Cycle hire from Dartmoor Cycles
Tarka Trail cycle path, North Devon, from nr Petrockstowe to Braunton, then Ilfracombe
I've just returned from a week's cycling in North Devon and Dartmoor! Join me cycling the Tarka Trail railway path in North Devon from just north of Petrockstowe (near Meeth, the southern end of the trail) to Great Torrington (including the Puffing Billy cafe at the old Great Torrington Railway Station), Bideford, Instow, Barnstaple and Braunton, and then onto Ilfracombe via the old Barnstaple & Ilfracombe railway, now a cycle path. The Tarka Trail forms the northern part of the superb Devon Coast to Coast (National Cycle Network Route 27).
The Tarka Trail is a traffic-free 32 mile cycle trail which runs from Braunton to Meeth in North Devon (and includes the former Barnstaple - Bideford railway line). Most of the cycle path is on tarmac but the first section is gravel. I have omitted the road section between Braunton and Mortehoe (where the Ilfracombe rail path starts) – you can see that on another video.
The cycle path isn’t entirely flat – there are gradients, the most notable being the Ilfracombe railway path on the return trip from Ilfracombe to (above) Mortehoe – this video only shows the downhill section to Ilfracombe, but the uphill return isn’t as bad as I thought it would be! (I easily did it in second gear.)
This video was filmed on 3 different days – hence the weather changes! You can see each individual section (including road sections) on other videos.

Places to see in ( Exeter - UK )
Places to see in ( Exeter - UK )
Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in southwest England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. The vaulted, medieval Underground Passages snake beneath the city.
Exeter lies within the county of Devon, of which it is the county town as well as the home of Devon County Council. Currently, the administrative area has the status of a non-metropolitan district and is therefore under the administration of the County Council (there was a plan to grant the city unitary authority status, although this was scrapped under the 2010 coalition government). The city is on the River Exe about 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Plymouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Bristol.
Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed in Exeter before the Roman invasion. Exeter became a religious centre during the Middle Ages and into the Tudor times: Exeter Cathedral, founded in the mid 11th century, became Anglican during the 16th-century English Reformation. During the late 19th century, Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade, although by the First World War the city was in decline. After the Second World War, much of the city centre was rebuilt and is now considered to be a centre for modern business and tourism in Devon and Cornwall.
The M5 motorway to Bristol and Exeter starts at Birmingham, and connects at Bristol with the M4 to London and South Wales. Exeter's main operator of local buses is Stagecoach South West, which operates most of the services in the city. Dartline is a minor operator in the City. Exeter is considered to be a rail hub within the south-west and is linked to most branch lines in Devon, including to Paignton, Exmouth, Barnstaple and Okehampton (by a special service). Exeter International Airport lies east of the city, and the local airline, previously called Jersey European and British European but now known as Flybe . The Exeter Canal also known as the Exeter Ship Canal was first completed in about 1566.

Salcombe South Hams Devon.
Salcombe is a popular resort town in the South Hams district of Devon, south west England. The town is close to the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary, mostly built on the steep west side of the estuary. It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The town's extensive waterfront and the naturally sheltered harbour formed by the estuary gave rise to its success as a boat and shipbuilding and sailing port and, in modern times, tourism especially in the form of pleasure sailing and yachting. The town is also home to a traditional shellfish fishing industry. The town is part of the electoral ward of Salcombe and Malborough, for which the 2011 census recorded a total population of 3,353.
Because of the narrow streets and the priority given to pedestrians, a park and ride scheme operates during the summer from the outskirts of Salcombe. Near Salcombe primary school is a swimming pool. The rugby club is a centre of activities during the winter. A locally flavoured pantomime is put on near Christmas.
The Salcombe Maritime Museum, founded in 1975, has information on the fruit schooners and other items of interest. Temporary exhibitions are arranged each summer mainly with loaned items. Since 1991, the museum has occupied the ground floor of the former council offices and the collections have expanded to fill the two rooms completely.
By South Sands is Overbeck's a house and gardens belonging to the National Trust. In the house are inventions of Otto Overbeck.
Salcombe has numerous walking routes nearby and is on the South West Coast Path. It is also the terminus of NCR 28 from Okehampton, part of the National Cycle Network.
The nearest golf course is at Thurlestone being 6.7 miles from Salcombe and there are various tourist attractions in the district. Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is close to the historical town of Dartmouth and is 16.3 miles from Salcombe. Wrangton Golf Club is 17.8 miles from Salcombe and half of the course is on Dartmoor amongst the sheep and half set in a luscious green valley.
There is a 20m outdoor heated swimming pool in Salcombe which forms part of the Salcombe Primary School. Run by volunteers, it is situated at the top of town on Onslow Road with parking available at the swimming pool.
The pool is open May to September each year and is available for private hire outside of the opening hours.

The Cottage is toddler friendly/ family holiday, you can be as relaxed or energetic as you want (chill out in the pool over looking the lake with Dartmoor in the background), or go fishing crazy in the lake or in the other fishing lakes nearby, go surfing in nearby Bude, walk on Dartmoor, some scenes from War Horse were shot near the holiday cottage.
Loads of walks and cycle trails nearby, sample some local delights (some of the local real ales are amazing and also feature well in the CAMRA awards, the area is called Ruby Country for the amazing beef, pasties, ice cream.. its a foodies delight!).
Spring Watch used to be shot in the next village to the cottage. There is plenty of wild life to be seen, Buzzards regularly nest nearby, Geese on the lake, Deer are every where, how quickly can you get your 'eye' in to spot them? We had one visitor spill their coffee when a deer trotted down the track beside them when they were having a quiet dusk drink on the decking. The owners regularly see Deer (2-3 times a week) when they are out walking their dog... oh and well behaved Dogs are welcome!
Check out the cottage on holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/hatherleigh/27244
The cottage is in the middle of Ruby Country. Lakeview Rise is inbetween Highampton and Black Torrington (made famous by Jack Russell!). The nearest main towns are Hatherleigh and Holsworthy... Bude is 20-30 mins away and Okehampton is 30 mins away.
