Devonport Park Bandstand, Devonport Park Plymouth UK
Research + Design were appointed by the Friends of Devonport Park to design a bandstand for the park. We worked in collaboration with students at the Plymouth College of Art to explore designs to reinstate the original bandstand and as well new contemporary designs.
Our studies culminated in a public consultation event in which the users of the park voted for their favorite design. The traditional design won the day.
We identified three qualities in the design and construction of the original bandstand : craft, connection to the trees and landscape, and civic character. Craft is expressed through the stone masonry and cast iron work. Connection to the landscape and park is expressed through the decorative elements and proportions of the construction. Plymouth is a port city in Devon, southwest England. It’s known for its maritime heritage and historic Barbican district with narrow, cobbled streets. Sutton Harbour is home to the National Marine Aquarium, where sharks and rays glide in a deep tank. Also in the harbour are several marinas and a fish market, the Plymouth Fisheries. The Mayflower Steps are where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620.
Plymouth is a city on the south coast of Devon, England, about 37 miles (60 km) south-west of Exeter and 190 miles (310 km) west-south-west of London, between the mouths of the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west where they join Plymouth Sound to form the boundary with Cornwall.
Plymouth lies between the River Plym to the east and the River Tamar to the west; both rivers flow into the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound. Plymouth is home to Plymouth Argyle F.C., who play in the fourth tier of English football league known as Football League Two. The team's home ground is called Home Park and is located in Central Park.
Plymouth main theatres are the Theatre Royal (1,315 capacity), its Drum Theatre (200 capacity), and its production and creative learning centre, The TR2. The Plymouth Pavilions has multiple uses for the city staging music concerts, basketball matches and stand-up comedy. There are also three cinemas: Reel Cinema at Derrys Cross, Plymouth Arts Centre at Looe Street and a Vue cinema at the Barbican Leisure Park. The Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is operated by Plymouth City Council allowing free admission – it has six galleries. The Plymouth Athenaeum, which includes a local interest library, is a society dedicated to the promotion of learning in the fields of science, technology, literature and art. From 1961 to 2009 it also housed a theatre.

Torbay Mods and friends from Plymouth visit Devonport Park Plymouth
There were 18 scooters altogether (10 Lambrettas and 8 Vespas) which rode into the Park. We all lined up on a beautiful sunny Sunday in Devonport Park Plymouth where we displayed our scooters for the public to see and also donated over £30 for Friends of Devonport Park.
