Interview with Tara Badcock at Opening of HUNT NATURE BIRTH 2015, Solo Commission
Watch our fabulous Droogs interview Tara Badcock at the opening of her 2015 Solo Commission HUNT NATURE BIRTH at the Devonport Regional Gallery.
The exhibition examines the dualities of motherhood and working as an artist - representing the balancing act of art and life as both a creative and nurturing process. Badcock's sculptural works metaphorically highlight the physical and emotional challenges inherent in motherhood - from inception to creation - and beyond.
Devonport and Maungauika/North Head Historic Reserve, Auckland, New Zealand
Dating from the mid 1800s Devonport is one of Auckland’s most historically authentic villages. It’s a place where time slows down, where boutique shops fill the spaces of Victorian-era buildings, and dining is always a relaxed and enjoyable experience. With some of the best beaches in the city, the golden sands and calm blue waters are right on our doorsteps.
Maungauika is a volcano forming a headland called North Head at the east end of the Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand, in the suburb of Devonport.[1][2] Known for its sweeping views over the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, since 1885 the head was mainly used by the military as a coastal defence installation, which left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy, forming part of the attraction. Maungauika is the Māori word for Mountain of Uika.
Take a self-guided walk through tunnels and other features of the area's military history, and watch a short movie at the summit.

Richmond, Tasmania | Travel Vlog
We enjoyed our visit to Richmond, Tasmania, a very historic town about 20 kms northeast of Hobart.
Richmond is one of Tasmania's most popular destinations, steeped in history, family-friendly and a hub for food and wine lovers. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur. The village is famous for its elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820's now housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums.
Conveniently located just 20 minutes drive from the Hobart CBD and 15 minutes from Hobart airport, Richmond is an ideal base from which to explore Hobart and beyond to southern Tasmania, Freycinet and the East Coast, and the Tasmanian Midlands, including the food, wine and heritage of the beautiful Coal River Valley.

Tasmania unveils travel art
A series of forgotten travel posters depicting an idyllic Tasmania have gone on exhibition in Hobart.
MACCA racing Devonport Tasmania
Fritz, my cameraman and I were traveling all the way long from Frankfurt respectively Vienna to observe the race in Devonport. It was a very small race mainly focused on the competition between Australia and New Zealand. The Australian team order was to beat the Kiwis. If you know Macca, subordination is not really his business but anyhow I think he seriously tries and does a good job. He wants to give his very best for the team.
Fritz and I enjoyed Tasmania. What a remote and peaceful place! The time we spent there was much too short. For the meeting with possums and wallabies we definitely did have not enough time left. Hopefully there is another chance to withdraw there for a longer period of time. Our B&B was so beautiful, called the Silver Ridge Retreat close to the town of Sheffield, a wonderful place.
Excuse this drifting away, but if you travel that far into another universe, a race becomes so minute for the short instances you are there.
But now back to the competition... except Brandon Sexton nobody had a really good race. Brandon's run was great, no one could keep his pace. Chris came in with the 5th fastest run time which was not bad, but not good enough to make everything clear for the Olympics. So the procedure of qualifying is going to be dragging along.
Maybe Madrid will be the place where the final decision is made which is fairly late if one considers beginning of August being the date that decides about who is going to win the medals.

Adam Chodzko's Ghost: Devonport
A compilation of the journeys taken in Adam Chodzko's Ghost from Devonport, June - December 2012.
Adam Chodzko is an artist based in the UK but working internationally. His art explores the interactions and possibilities of human behaviour. Working across media, from video installation to subtle interventions, with a practice that is situated both within the gallery and the wider public realm, his work investigates and invents the possibilities of collective imagination.

Ghost is a kayak; a sculpture as vessel, coffin, bed, costume and camera rig.
It is designed to ferry people to the island of the dead.
Ghost is designed by Chodzko to have a rower in the back, and a member of the public in the front. The passenger lies down low and flat. Like a body in a coffin with their head slightly raised.
A dome in the deck of the kayak also separates them physically and visually from the paddler at the back. On the deck is a mount for a camera which records the journey of the kayak from across its bows. Therefore Ghost generates a record of its own journeys and this footage will be archived as each passenger makes their own unique journey.
During exhibitions Ghost will appear and disappear from the exhibition space in order to visit islands of the dead. Whether these islands are actual or metaphorical will alter according to circumstance. The marks it accumulates from this usage act as a further record of its activity.
