Downtown: Covington Mainstrasse | Kentucky Life | KET
Visitors will find a little bit of old Germany in Covington Mainstrasse, where they can sample the culture and food of old Europe in this neighborhood of meticulously restored 19th century buildings.
Setting the mood are the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower and the Goose Girl Fountain. The German Gothic bell tower features music and on the hour mechanical figures come out on the balcony to depict the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The Goose Girl Fountain was inspired by a German fairy tale and was created to remember the German farmers who raised geese in Covington years ago.
Today more than 30 shops, restaurants, hotels and taverns cater to tourists. Although the neighborhood has German roots, you'll find English and Irish pubs as well as Cajun food. This Northern Kentucky community is known for its Maifest and its Oktoberfest (held in September), but there's lots of fun year-round, with everything from Goettafest in June to the Classic Car Show in August to the Dog Pawrade in October.

Covington Schools push start date back to September due to water problems in buildings
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - Summer break continues for more than 4,000 students in the Covington Independent School District.
The superintendent says several problems at buildings have forced them to delay the start of class. The most damage is at John G. Carlisle Elementary. A pipe burst on a Saturday and no one noticed until someone walking by saw water coming out the front door. School officials said they pumped 3,000 gallons out of the building.
Holmes High School 10th grader Donovan Starr said the news that the start of school is delayed was music to his ears.
Yeah, I never expected them to do that, said Starr. That and we have more marching band practice, so that works.
In addition to the burst pipe at John G. Carlisle, the Holmes campus suffered water damage from a flood that's still being cleaned up. The district wants everyone to start at the same time, so the decision was made to push the start date from Aug. 15 to Sept. 3. For some parents and caregivers, the three-week delay is frustrating.
Help, somebody! Send help our way, laughed grandmother Geneen Drake.
Drake's grandchildren were enjoying the park Wednesday. They would have been at Randolph Pool, but that closed this weekend for the season. The city of Covington shut it down along with the splash pad at the sports complex in Latonia.
But the library is open. Kenton County's Covington branch is going to restart its summer feeding program, which means kids under 18 can get lunch at no cost. Program Director Kari Jones says the library is scrambling to help, so the details aren't finalized yet, but they are planning on adding activities too.
We probably will see an influx of kids who are just here throughout the day because local childcare is kind of out for the summer, so it's like what are parents doing for that? So we might see some of those kids who are able to come to the library by themselves up here, said Jones.
The extra time off now doesn't mean less schoolwork. Covington's superintendent said in a message to parents that the full school year calendar is being revised and will be approved by the school board later in August.
The district is also repairing the Transformational Learning Center building due to water damage. That houses the district’s alternative program in Devou Park.
