Evolving tradition | Mandakini Mathur | TEDxPanchgani
The story of metal casting in India started 5000 years ago - and despite many changes, some elements have remained constant. This was the story shared by Mandakini Mathur with the attendees of the TEDxPanchgani. Even though it seems that traditions should always remain constant, yet traditions are also living things, and so they too evolve! Working with Adivasi tribals, Mandakini realized that sustaining Art also required sustaining and nurturing the Artist. Evolving tradition, while retaining the essential spirit of the art form, leads to encouragement and success for both the art form and the artist. Describing different methods and techniques, Mandakini kept the audience enthralled and fascinated with the beautiful artifacts created by the Art Village. Our culture, our community, our country - all are rooted in the constant and yet vibrant with change!
Mandakini Mathur, founder of Devrai Art Village, has always had a keen interest in the arts, and also in the environment. Having done her M-Phil in Cinema Studies from the Sorbonne, Paris in 1989, she has been making feature and documentary films on issues of environmental concern, Indian culture, spirituality and child-centric themes. She writes film scripts, stories and poetry (Radha, Poems of Love.) She has also written the script for A Tiger’s Cry, an Indo-British feature film based on the theme of protecting Indian wildlife and the Jungles with Shyam Benegal as the director. Based in Panchgani since 1997, she founded Devrai Art Village in 2009. This NGO strives to empower tribal craftsmen through their art. Experimenting with different mediums and designs, Devrai Art Village has brought about an innovation in the ancient art form of lost wax nonferrous metal casting. ‘Rock Dhokra’ is a never tried before technology for fusing stone and brass.

Ananta Basudeba Temple; ancient temple in india; unexplored temple 17th century; ruins; terracotta
The Ananta Basudeba temple was constructed by Rameshwar Datta, an ardent follower of Vaishnavism, in 1679. Three sides of the one-storeyed temple are decorated with richly carved terracotta panels. The turret also contains terracotta carvings. Its decorative scheme is similar to that of the terracotta temples, situated in Bishnupur. Bansberia’s importance in pre-Muslim Bengal was religious, owing to its location at the Tribeni or confluence of three rivers (Ganga, Jamuna, and Saraswati). After Muslim occupation in the late 13th century, it continued to be an important city under the Tughlaks, as a military base, mint-town and port. After the Mughal conquest of Bengal in the mid-16th century, the city started to decline due to the loss of royal patronage, but some areas such as Bansberia continued to prosper up to the 19th century. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore visited this temple and he was so much moved by its beauty asked Nandalal Bose who came here and took drawings of each and every terracotta pictures of the panels.
The trip to Bansberia remains incomplete without a visit to this temple.
The terra cotta works on buildings were a new style in the 17th century and the Anant Vasudeva temple was a fine example of it during that period. The temple inspired many craftsmen during that period and similar structures including temples were builtin nearby areas. The Ramachandra temple built in Gupti Para is an example of this. The terra cotta work became a symbol of Bengal architecture during this period and contributed to the extreme popularity of the Anant Vasudeva Temple during this period.
In 1656, the Mughal emperor appointed Raghab Dattaroy of Patuli as the zamindar of an area that includes the present-day Bansberia. Legend has it that Raghab’s son Rameshwar cleared a bamboo grove to build a fort, inspiring the name Bansberia
