Traffic jam problem of dhaka
I WAS IN DHAKA, which is to say I was stuck in traffic. The proposition might more accurately be phrased the other way around: I was stuck in traffic, therefore I was in Dhaka. If you spend some time in Bangladesh’s capital, you begin to look anew at the word “traffic,” and to revise your definition. In other cities, there are vehicles and pedestrians on the roads; occasionally, the roads get clogged, and progress is impeded. The situation in Dhaka is different. Dhaka’s traffic is traffic in extremis, a state of chaos so pervasive and permanent that it has become the city’s organizing principle. It’s the weather of the city, a storm that never lets up.
Dhakaites will tell you that the rest of the world doesn’t understand traffic, that the worst traffic jam in Mumbai or Cairo or Los Angeles is equivalent to a good day for Dhaka’s drivers. Experts agree. In the 2016 Global Liveability Survey, the quality of life report issued annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Dhaka ranked 137th out of 140 cities, edging out only Lagos, Tripoli and war-torn Damascus; its infrastructure rating was the worst of any city in the survey. Like other megacities of the developing world, Dhaka is both a boomtown and a necropolis, with a thriving real-estate market, a growing middle class and a lively cultural and intellectual life that is offset by rampant misery: poverty, pollution, disease, political corruption, extremist violence and terror attacks. But it is traffic that has sealed Dhaka’s reputation among academics and development specialists as the great symbol of 21st-century urban dysfunction, the world’s most broken city. It has made Dhaka a surreal place, a town that is both frenetic and paralyzed, and has altered the rhythms of daily life for its 17.5 million-plus residents. Not long ago, the Dhaka-based Daily Star newspaper published an article titled “5 Things to Do While Stuck in Traffic.” Suggested activities included “catching up with friends,” reading and journaling.
The first chapter of my own Dhaka journal begins in March of last year, on a highway that runs south from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport into the center of town. If you do a web search for this stretch of road, you may come across a Facebook page titled “Highway to Hell, Airport Road.” Photographs posted online reveal the nature of the hell, aerial shots capturing a scrum of automobiles strewn at odd angles across eight lanes of road. It looks like a Matchbox set that has been scattered by an angry toddler: the morning commute as a cosmic temper tantrum.

These images had me prepared for the worst. Yet on my flight to Dhaka I was told that the traffic in the city would be unusually light. For weeks, Bangladesh had been gripped by a hartal, a nationwide general strike and “transportation blockade.” The hartal, called by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was an effort to pressure Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina into holding new elections. The strike had disrupted everyday life in the capital, with street demonstrations and sporadic violence causing Dhaka’s denizens to curb their normal routines. It had accomplished the seemingly impossible, breaking the logjam on Dhaka’s streets. A Bangladeshi on my flight explained the situation. “In Dhaka, you have either horrible traffic or really horrible traffic,” he said. “But with the hartal, there will be almost no traffic. Traffic will be O.K.”
Horrible traffic, really horrible traffic, almost no traffic, O.K. traffic — it takes just a few minutes in Dhaka to realize that these are not scientific terms. When my plane touched down I caught a taxi, which exited the airport into a roundabout before making its way onto the infamous highway. There, unmistakably, was a traffic jam: cars and trucks, as far the eye could see, stacked up in a configuration that bore no clear relationship to the lanes painted on the blacktop. My cab nosed into the convoy. Whereupon a crawl commenced.
The traffic rolled south for 20 seconds. The traffic stopped. My cab idled for a couple of minutes at a dead standstill. Then, for mysterious reasons, it crept forward again. Occasionally, the traffic would flow unimpeded for a minute or so, reaching a clip of perhaps 15 miles per hour. But soon we’d lurch to a halt again. It was the kind of stop-and-go routine I’d experienced on American interstates, the “bumper-to-bumper” conditions that traffic reporters describe on news radio, shouting something about a jackknifed tractor-trailer over thumping helicopter rotors. In this case, though, the problem was not an accident. The problem was Dhaka.
Nature and Life Episode 148 (Centurion trees of Dhaka City)
Capital Dhaka is one of the oldest cities of Bangladesh.
Beautiful plants enriched this City is surrounded by river Turag, Bali, Burigonga and Shitolakkha.
But trees of this city are not in good condition now due to population growth and mechanization.
Yet some century old trees are still surviving in some places of this very city.
These trees are not only beautifying the city, they are also bearing the heritage of the city and at the same time working as lung for the city.
Even though the exact plantation times of these century old trees are unknown but they are counted as centurion trees as per historical clues and public hearsay.
Some Banian trees of Dhaka are quite old.
Some of them are around 100 years old.
The age of these trees, that shelter various birds and animals, can be estimated from their physical structure.
There are some large Padauk trees on the both sides of the way from the Chief Justice's residence to the boundary of Ramna Park.
Almost 100 years ago, those trees have been planted during the construction of Ramna Park.
These trees become full with golden-yellow flowers for only one day in a year time.
On that very day these trees keep the park colorful throughout the day with their flowers and then shed all flowers in the evening.
There is a Mahua tree (Madhuca longifolia) in the north-west corner of Ramna.
It is maily a large sized hilly tree.
Branches of this tree spread from the upper side of the smooth and long trunk.
The tree looks attractive due to densed combination of branches and leaves.
Mahua sheds all its leaves during winter.
But becomes colorful again with flowers in spring.
Udayan High School is sited in front of Central Shaheed Minar of Dhaka.
A very large Tamarind tree has been standing on the right side of the School's main gate for last 100 years.
Blackish trunk of this tree is covered with numerous nodules and spots.
But upper level branches are fresh.
The structure of its roots and trunk prove that it's a longstanding tree.
There is a centurion Wild Almond tree by the gate of Tejgaon Govt. Sceince College.
This tree shed leaves in winter.
In spring, the tree becomes rejuvenated with new leaves and colorful flowers.
The whole tree becomes colorful with boat-shaped flowers.
A Telshur tree can be seen in front of the residence of the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University.
This tree is 100 or more years old.
There is a Black Bean tree on the north side of the State Guest House- Jamuna.
The tree remains green throughout the year.
Medium sized this tree looks very attractive with its blackish branches hanging downward.
During April-June, this tree becomes vibrant with orange-red flowers.
Rows of Kusum trees can be seen inside Ramna Park, near the Arunoday gate.
With colorful leaves, these trees look like avenue of flowers.
There is a centurion River Ebony tree in Ramna Park.
Medium sized this evergreen tree has blackish round trunk.
The tree looks bushy with densely spread branches.
Flowers bloom at the beginning of summer.
Round yellow fruits mature by the end of monsoon.
Giant Crape-myrtle tree of Nilkhet area, rows of Gogon Shirish trees on the north side of Karjon Hall, and Aswatha & Weeping Fig trees on the south-east side of Highcourt are also very old.
Recenty Dhaka, as a capital, has celebrated its 400th year's anniversary.
Whereas, no 400 years old tree available in this city.
Many of Dhaka's longstanding trees are disappearing due to political turmoil, population growth, unawareness and irresponsible human activities.
Only very few of such trees are still surviving in the face of many adversities.
These trees are our heritage, our asset.
Like others, these trees will also disappear if we fail to protect them from various adversities.
We all have to be conscious about conserving these trees.
Survival of these trees will also require Government to take conservation initiatives by taking ownership of all the longstanding trees of the country.

Let's build inclusive and safe cities in Bangladesh
The Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction Project (UPPR), funded by UKAID, works with communities in poor urban settlements across Bangladesh to improve livelihoods and living conditions. Working in partnership with the Government of Bangladesh and UN Habitat, UNDP believes that these communities are best placed to identify their main priorities. In particular, UPPR looks to create space for extreme poor women and empower them to make these decisions. Activities include improving the physical conditions of settlements, improving socio-economic opportunities and the development of savings and credit groups. UPPR also works to create a pro-poor policy environment, particularly through the Bangladesh Urban Forum.

#Bogra (Bengali: বগুড়া) is a town and one of the oldest towns in northern Bangladesh. It is a centre of commerce and trade within the Bogra District and located under the Rajshahi Division. Bogra is sometimes described as the nerve centre of Northern Bangladesh, it is also a bridge between Rajshahi Division and Rangpur Division. The area of the town is approximately 71.65 km2 (27.66 sq mi), and Present Mayor of the municipality is Adv. Mahabubar Rahman, The Bogra Town Area Covers a Population of 576,000 people. It consists of 21 wards. Among many notable activities, it has been hosting cricket test matches in Shaheed Chandu Stadium. Bogra is also the battle of honour of a number of crucial operations fought by the guerillas under BDF Sector 7 of and Bengal Regiment's of the newly formed Bangladesh Army with Pakistani army here during the Bangladesh war of independence in 1971.
Bogra town also has an importance in terms of transport in northern Bangladesh, as it's situated at the centre. Very close to the town there is a place called Mahasthangarh which was the earliest capital city of Bangladesh, formerly known as Pundravardhana. This place is considered to be sacred by Buddhists and Hindus alike, and is visited by tourists from all over Bangladesh throughout the year.
Former Diplomat and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Bogra was born in Bogra. Bogura is a town and district in the Rajshahi division of north eastern Bangladesh. The town is situated on the right bank of the river Karatoya. The present District of Bogura, was first formed in 1821. It contains an area of 1,359 sq mi (3,520 km2). In 1901, the population of the town was 7,094 and the district (on a reduced area) was 854,533, showing an increase of 11% in the decade. The district stretches out in a level plain, intersected by numerous streams and dotted with patches of jungle. The Karatoya flows from north to south, dividing it into two portions, possessing very distinct characteristics. The eastern tract consists of rich alluvial soil, well watered, and subject to fertilizing inundations, yielding heavy crops of coarse rice, oil-seeds and jute. The western portion of the district is high-lying and produces the finer qualities of rice.
Tourism of Bogra: Mahasthangarh, the earliest urban archaeological site so far discovered in Bangladesh is located in Bogra. The village Mahasthan in Shibganj thana of Bogra District contains the remains of an ancient city which was called Pundranagara or Paundravardhanapura in the territory of Pundravardhana.[8][9][10] This place is considered to be sacred by Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus alike.[11] Behular Bashor Ghar which is very near to Mahasthangar is a popular place for the tourists. Tourists from all over Bangladesh visit this place throughout the year. Nawab Palace (called Neelkuthi during the British period) and Jaina Temple are two eminent archaeological sights located in Bogra. 4 star hotel, Hotel Naz Garden, is situated at the heart of Bogra city.

Water logging in Dhaka Part-1: Cause & remedy : Alamgir Swapan 110817
40 Years of Camp Life
40 Years begins with an overview of how the Bihari Camps of Bangladesh came into existence and gives the audience an idea of where the camp-dwelling Urdu-speaking population came from before landing in the camps. This important background is given in the form of a voice-over while the audience is taken on a visual tour of Geneva Camp (the largest of the 116 Bihari Camps in Bangladesh) and through the daily activities of its 25,000 residents.
The main part of the documentary film follows a group of youth as they define the problems they have faced growing up as camp-dwelling Urdu-speaking Bangladeshis and discuss how they plan to address some of these problems such as social discrimination and lack of access to basic urban services (including adequate supplies of clean water, toilets, and electricity).
To give further perspective on the struggles of the camp-dwelling members of Bangladesh's Urdu-speaking linguistic minority, several other interviews are conducted with camp residents who have discarded the dream of going to Pakistan (which was one of the main reasons why Urdu-speakers continued living in the camps after 1971) and opted for rehabilitation in Bangladesh.
