Dhammayangyi Temple (Burmese: ဓမ္မရံကြီးဘုရား, pronounced [dəma̰jàɴdʑí pʰəjá]) is a Buddhist temple located in Bagan, Myanmar. Largest of all the temples in Bagan, the Dhammayan as it is popularly known was built during the reign of King Narathu:167 (1167-1170). Narathu, who came to the throne by assassinating his father Alaungsithu and his elder brother, presumably built this largest temple to atone for his sins.
The Dhammayangyi is the widest temple in Bagan, and is built in a plan similar to that of Ananda Temple. Burmese chronicles state that while the construction of the temple was in the process, the king was assassinated by some Indians and thus the temple was not completed. Sinhalese sources however indicate that the king was killed by Sinhalese invaders.
The temple's interior is bricked up for unknown reasons, thus only the four porches and the outer corridors are accessible.
Episode 19: Bagan, Myanmar: Pagodas, Stupas, and Dhammayangyi Buddist Temples Ebikes Burma Heritage
Bagan is a FASCINATING small town in central Myanmar (Burma). It is a place not to be missed. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this 26 square mile plain is covered in ancient temples, pagodas, and stupas. They are literally found in every direction you look! Grab an e-bike and get lost! Travel down narrow, sandy paths and discover covered relics. Go into the temples (take off your shoes and socks and prepare for a painful walk on pebbled cement!) look at the Buddhas, ancient paintings, etc. It's a walk back in time to the 11th-13th Century. Sadly, earthquakes and resulting fires consumed all of the structures creating in wood. The remaining 2200 temples (of 10,000) are in the process of being preserved, though some are in really bad shape. Your tourism helps maintain the temples and the incredible history! Don't miss the cattle drives just before sunset and the sunset from the highest point in Bagan! It's truly a sight not to be missed...the sun setting over the the Irrawaddy River and behind all the steeples of the pagodas. We were in Bagan before the ballooning began, but we hear that it is amazing! Enjoy your stay!

We COULDN'T BELIEVE Our Eyes! | The Best Temples In Bagan, Myanmar
Looking for the best temples in Bagan, Myanmar? We spent 5 days in the ancient city and made it our goal to visit them all! It’s a fact—no image, video, or memory of Bagan, Myanmar can come close to portraying the magic that quite literally smacks you in the face upon arrival. Jaws were dropped, goosebumps were raised, tears were shed—this place is no joke.
We rented e-bikes for 4,000 kyat per person/per day in New Bagan and headed out on a full day, self-guided adventure, stopping off at all of the major players (Thatbyinnyu Temple, Ananda Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple, etc.) while making sure to cruise through the smaller, distant temples that you can claim all to yourselves (the latter was much more our style). Entrance to the historical region costs 25,000 kyat for foreigners, a small fee considering you’re good for 5-day unlimited use. You better believe we used every last day. :)

Hi friends! We’re Braden & Taylor, a newlywed couple from California living with a BAD case of the travel bug. In Fall 2018, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and packed two tiny suitcases to find out what it truly means to live life to the fullest. First and foremost, we vlog for ourselves — our channel is a living picture book of the memories we collect over the next months and years around the globe, traveling to over 60 countries by 2020. If there’s a place we haven’t been, it’s on our list!
Secondly, we document our life on the road for family, friends and strangers alike — if our videos help pass on the travel influenza, then we’ve done our job. ???? We don’t know where this trip will take us, but we promise to ourselves and to you that we will always present both the beautiful and the ugly, because no trip is perfect, and neither is our world. Don’t be shy — send us a shout out when we’re in your area, and be sure to subscribe + hit the bell to be notified of future videos!
HIDDEN TEMPLE ADVENTURES IN BAGAN, MYANMAR
Check out my adventures among the thousands of ancient stupas (temples) in Bagan, Myanmar. I discover a couple hidden temples where you can climb to the top through small, hidden stairways that most tourists don't know about. Here is a list of the temples I visit through out this video:
- Ananda Temple (large temple great to begin with)
- Pitaka Taik (very dark temple)
- Shwegu Gyi Phaya (large upstairs terrace overlooking temples)
- Dhammayan Gyi Temple (ancient original wall paintings)
- Mingalazedi Pagoda (closed due to 2016 earthquake)
- Manuha Temple (huge laying Buddha)
- Unnamed temple just south of Myin Ka Bar Village (west side of main road with hidden stairway to top)
- North Guni Temple (hidden stairway to top with 360 degree views of all temples - very difficult to find)
- Pyathetgyi Pagoda (huge castle-like temple)
Check out my write up about my experience in Bagan.
