Dhankar - Lake, Fort & Tractor ride in Spiti | Spiti valley backpacking

On day 5 we hitchhiked a Tractor ride to reach Dhankar from Schilling.
We left Tabo in the noon, fetched a ride till Schiling.

Places visited : Dhankar Lake, Dhankar Monastery(New and Old) and Dhankar fort
Transport used : Car ride till Schiling and then a Tractor
Night stay at : Dhankar

Dhankar Village is a large high village which used to be the capital of the Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. It is at an altitude of 3,894 metres (12,774 feet) above sea level, between the towns of Tabo and Kaza.
Dhankar was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom during the 17th century and has some features dating back to the 12th century. Dhang or dang means cliff, and kar or khar means fort. Hence, Dhankar means fort on a cliff. It was the place of the early ruler of Spiti, the Nonos, who has the right to promote the government lands nearby and were necessary to keep the fort in repair. They also gave justice to the people and were famous for their harsh penalties until the British replaced them. In recent years, due to the deterioration of the building, some sections of the gompa have been abandoned and a new gompa has been built further down. Meanwhile, the fort of Dhankar, destroyed by an earthquake in 1975, now lies in ruins, but is still a place worthy of a visit. From the remnants of the fort one can see vast expanses of the Spiti valley. Dhankar is also of art historical importance.

Altitude Sickness Got Me ! Dhankar Monastery and Lake | Episode 2 | Spiti Valley to Zanskar RoadTrip

The beautiful Dhankar Monastery and the trek to Dhankar Lake in Spiti Valley was going all good until I got symptoms of High Altitude Sickness (AMS). This was the Day3 of our Zanskar Spiti Lahaul Road Trip and we reached Dhankar. Saw the Monastery and hiked to the Dhankar lake and then went back to Kaza.
We didn't travel much on the Himalayan Roads in this episode, but you might have checked the scary roads of Tashigang and Shipki La in the previous episode.
We will get to Zanskar (yes the one you saw in Ronnie and Barty vlogs) in the coming episodes.

Meeting the mummy : Spiti - Part 4 | Key Gompa | Dhankar | Nako

The fourth and the last part of our travelogue from Spiti. We head out of Kaza to visit Key Gompa which is the largest monastery in spiti and also cross Dhankar and Tabo monasteries. While we did attempt to get to Mud village in Pin valley, our adventures were cut short by a landslide which had swallowed the road. We take a break at Nako to walk around the lake and eventually head out towards the plains away from the mighty Himalayas.

On 2nd May when my travel-mate left for 3 km trek to Dhankar lake, it was time to mount my tripod on the verandah of Tanzin Guest House. The property being located midway between the old Dhankar Monastery and new Dhankar Monastery compound with a grand Himalayan vista acting as a backdrop to this village on hill slope. The landscape was worth savoring. The 3 km trek to Dhankar lake visuals is provided by Sachin Vaidya. The Spiti valley looks spectacular with rivers Spiti and Pin flowing in narrow streams. The Dhankar lake itself was fully frozen with beautiful looking Chorten giving the place a grand dimension.

A trek to DHANKAR lake (HD) @chinu

Dhankar lake is situated above the village of Dhankar at the height of 4136 metters (13570 feet) in the middle of hills. A lot of people consider it an easy hike but the climb can make you breathless within a few seconds. For people who are not used to steep climbs, the hike to the lake can be physically challenging. But the view is rewarding for the ones who don’t give up. We suggest going slow and steady and not passing up the hike to this beautiful lake. The view from the lake is beautiful and you can even see far off mountains covered in snow.

Dhankar Monastery Spiti, a monastery on mounds ढाँकर गोम्पा स्पीति, मिट्टी के टीलों पर स्थित गोम्पा

Dhankar monastery or Dhankar Gompa is a worth seeing monastery in Spiti of Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.Its uniqueness lies in the naturally built sharp edges mounds around it. Spiti river and its confluence point with Pin river all look very charming from Dhankar Monastery. Dhankar monastery lies almost in between Kaza and Tabo on Kaza Shimla road. There is a bifurcation towards Dhankar Gompa from Sichhling. From Sichhling, Dhankar monastery is at a distance of around eight kilometers.

TABO to KAZA # DHANKHAR MONASTERY

Dhangkar is a village and also a Buddhist temple in the district of Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, India. It is situated at an elevation of 3,894 metres (12,774 feet) in the Spiti Valley above Dhankar Village, between the towns of Tabo to Kaza. The road trip from Tabo to Kaza itself has a scenic value.

A MUMMY of a Tibetan Buddhist monk, believed to be about 500 years old, has been found in India’s northern Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh.The mummy, identified as that of monk Sangha Tenzin, was found inside a tomb at Ghuen village in the cold and remote Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, about 6000 metres above sea level.

The MUMMY Of SPITI VALLEY

The mummy is of a great Lama, located at GIU Village in Spiti Valley. It is a naturally preserved dead body in a glass case. Mummy was found in a sitting position inside the rocks approx. 1000yrs. ago & till date its the same. You can clearly identify the face, position of hands , teeth & hair on the head. Local villagers consider it pious and has many spiritual beliefs associated to it.
