Our team traveled to Mumbai, India, to get the inside scoop on Dharavi, widely considered the largest slum in Asia. We met with the real people of Dharavi, the slum that inspired the movie, Slumdog Millionaire.

Dharavi, Mumbai - Biggest slum in Asia
Local trains pass through the infamous Dharavi in Mumbai. As you can see the ragpicker going through the dump of garbage smack in the centre of the slums. The life in the biggest slum in Asia is sadly colourful as for the residents' of Dharavi life just gets more and more challenging.
Dharavi local, Yamas Mani says I was born in Madras and I came to Bombay for a job 25 years ago. Earlier this area was still better but now it has turned into a slum area.

Solo In India's Biggest Slum | Dharavi Mumbai
???????? I had read a lot about Dharavi, Mumbai's and the world's biggest slum. I had seen videos of the squalor and poverty to be found there but I wanted to go and see another side, I wanted to see if I could find some joy there, some happiness, some hope. And so whilst in Mumbai I set off in search of Dharavi intending to see for myself how life was progressing there. Join me on a wild adventure through the world's largest slum.

Two and a half years ago, during my first visit in India, I spent 2 days walking all around the slums of Mumbai. Even though I got to learn quite a bit about the life in the slums, I didn’t have the chance to live inside the slums and because of that I left with more questions than answers.
So now that I came back to India for the second time, I decided to go back to Mumbai and spend five days living in Dharavi, which is one of the largest slums in the world.
This experience opened my eyes in ways I couldn’t have imagined, because I got to spend so much time with the local people, who completely transformed my outlook on what their lives were like.
You see, as most outsiders, I had a very distorted view of the people of the slums. We grow up hearing stories about them dying on the streets, no one being able to read and write, kids having to sleep surrounded by flesh-eating rats and so on.
There are, of course, tons of problems that need to be addressed, especially when it comes to sanitation. For example, sources say that in Dharavi there is an average of 1 toilet for a thousand people. Also, livestock generally lives in the same quarters with people and that, combined with the fact that the local water sources lack cleaning facilities, sometimes causes the spread of contagious diseases.
However, people there are just like everywhere else. They have their own dreams, goals, careers, thoughts and emotions. They are in no way different from the rest of us.
It doesn’t matter where we come from. We are all equal. Some of us are born with golden spoons in our mouths, others are not. But that doesn’t define us. What defines us is our pursuit of happiness, our compassion for others and our ability to adapt to whatever circumstances we’re in and make the best of them.

INDIA: DHARAVI SLUMS TRANSFORMING INTO MINI INDUSTRIAL STATE

Dharavi is Bombay's most famous slum-turned-success story.
One of Asia's largest slums, it used to be a criminal hideout and haven for illegal activities - but now it is slowly transforming into a mini-industrial state.
The industrial boom has done away with unemployment in Dharavi and industrialists believe that with government support it could become the centre for the leather industry.
Barely 15 years ago, no one dared to tread the streets and alleys of Dharavi.
Bombay's most famous slum was considered a haven for gambling, smuggling and other illegal activities.
Originally a wasteland, Dharavi is spread over a 10 square kilometre area.
The small scale units in the area include leather factories, scrap traders, ready-made garments and dying and printing.
The scrap industry is the most dominant, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the total trade.
The leather industry has a 30 percent share of this market.
The industrial growth is totally unplanned.
According to Mrs Manda of the Women's Industrial Cooperative, the main thing holding them back from further growth is not being able to secure land.

Because this area is a slum, we can't mortgage the land. It belongs to the municipality. We can't get a loan because if the municipality decided to demolish the slum, the bank would lose the money.

The industrialisation movement within the slum has gained momentum in the last 10 years.
As none of the industrial units in Dharavi are registered with the government, it is only an estimate that there are between seven to ten-thousand.
Most leather and garment units are home-based.
Many families undertake jobs per assignment.
There are four banks operating in the area.
As financiers and loan providers, banks have played an important role in promoting industries in the slum.
A major problem is that only the registered units are entitled to get loan...most are not registered.
About 10 percent of Daravi's industrial units pay income and other taxes.
But those who do are not very happy about it.
They say the government has not helped the slum entrepreneurs as it should have.

We buy scrap material and process it. It's a very laborious process. It involves cleaning a lot of rubbish. But the government is imposing tax on us. This tax should be abolished.

The industrial boom has transformed the Dharavi slum - the lifestyle has improved as has per capita income.
Luxuries like television have become affordable.
Many slum industrialists feel that if they get infra-structural and financial support from the government, they can turn Dharavi into one of the biggest centres for the leather industry.

Inside look of the Biggest Slum in Mumbai (DHARAVI)
In Mumbai, India, I took a tour of the biggest slum in the world called Dharavi.
Also made famous by the movie Slumdog Millionaire, Dharavi has well over 1 million people living in a space that's half the size of Central Park in NYC. Walking through Dharavi was the most eye-opening and real experience that I've ever had. At first, I was nervous and I thought it'd be unsafe and scary, but I was proven wrong. I learned how productive the people work and how much this slum produces to the Indian economy. Everything there is VERY well organized with industrial factories and residential neighborhoods. Dhravi is over a billion dollar industry, using recycled foods to produce everything from aluminum to leather to pottery, and they make everything by hand. The poverty levels and dirty streets are nothing like I've seen in my life, with most people working 15 hours a day in extreme hot weather for just $1-3 USD per day. But above all, most people didn't seem unhappy. I saw hundreds of smiling faces on the kids as they were giving me hi-fives when I walked past them. It was both humbling and mentally exhausting and something I'll never forget. I think everyone should see Dharavi with their eyes because then you'll begin to appreciate how much you have in life.
