Dhammikarama Burmese Temple
Dhamikarama Burmese Temple in Penang was the first kyaung (Burmese monastery-temple) in Malaysia, built in 1803. As the first kyaung in Penang, Dhammikarama is a temple filled with striking features and rich past. It provides a historical evidence of Bamar residence in Penang as well as the retreat for Buddhist devotees. The temple is located at the enclave of Burmah Lane, Tikus Island alongside the magnificent Thai architecture of Wat Chayamangkalaram.

Reclining Buddha Temple, Georgetown, Penang, Malasia
Wat Chayamangkalaram Thai Buddhist Temple near Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia
Located at Burma Road, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia this beautiful gold plated reclining Buddha of the Wat Chayamangkalaram (Thai budhhist temple) is said to be the 3rd largest of its kind with its 55 metres length(180 foot). The temple was built in 1845 on land (5 acres) which was donated on behalf of Queen Victoria to the Thai community on 30 May 1845 by W L Butterworth of the East India Company. The main shrine and pagoda were built in 1900. The first monk was a Theravada Buddhist monk from Thailand, Phorthan Kuat, also known as the Powerful Monk.
Buddha is generally found in four positions: a seated position, a standing position, a walking position and a reclining position. The reclining Buddha representing the Buddha's death and symbolizes complete peace and detachment from the world -- the Mahaparinirvana ( Enlighthenment or achieving Nirwana ) of the Buddha which took place at Kushinagara (Uttar Pradesh).
The statue of the Reclining Buddha is not supposed to evoke sadness, but rather encouragement that all beings have the potential to become enlightened and attain release from the sufferings which characterize the cycle of rebirth. The reclining Buddha's serene, composed, and restful demeanour (he is actually slightly smiling) a reminder of the serenity that comes with enlightenment.
Besides the impressive reclining Buddha, you can find many other smaller shrines of Buddha, and Thai deities. There is also series of painted images portraying the story of the Lord Gautama Buddha. The floor of the temple is laid with tiles of lotus patterns -- lotus is a symbol in Buddhism.
Admission to the Wat Chayamangkalaram temple is free, but do remember to remove your shoes before entering the temple grounds.
Open hours: 6.00am -- 5:30pm

Built in 1803, the temple is the only buddhist burmese temple in the state of Malaysia. The best time to come here is during Vesak Day where it comes alive for most devotees. There are monks living in this area during my visit. Opposite temple is the stunning Wat Chayamangkalaram which I'll be posting soon.
