Inside Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai's largest open air laundry)
Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat - Mumbai's largest open air laundry. 5,000 people work here, washing up to 100,000 pieces of clothing everyday.
Clothes are marked individually and are returned to the owners after washing without getting mixed up. Hospital clothes, brand new pre-washed jeans and shirts etc are washed here. Old saris are treated with chemicals and given a new lease of life in the 2nd hand market.
With the introduction of washing machines, fewer people are needed. Productivity is increased but the livelihood of the washermen are affected. Its a tough life.
I am lucky to have met Samir during my recce of the place the night before the shoot. He agreed to be my guide and commentator. We had a short discussion and did the video shoot the next morning in 1 hr.

The Saat Rasta Project is a proposed Public Space Project along the Bapurao Jagtap Road, connecting Jacob Circle to the Mahalaxmi Railway Station. This public space will connect to Dhobi Ghat, which is also a major tourist attraction.
Dhobi (English: washerman) is a caste group primarily belonging to India and Pakistan, whose traditional occupation was washing clothes. The word Dhobi is derived from the Hindi word dhona, which means to wash. They are found throughout North India, Gujarat, Maharashtra as well as the Punjab province of Pakistan, where they are known as Gazar.
Dhobis in various regions are likely to be of many different ethnic origins: their ancestors took the occupation of washing clothes, evolving over time into a distinct caste bound by rules of endogamy. Most Dhobis follow the customs and traditions of the region they live, so for example those in North India speak Hindi, while those in Maharashtra speak Marathi. The Dhobi rank themselves highest among the scheduled castes,The Census of 2001 returned Dhobis representing six per cent of the Scheduled Castes.Wikipedia

Laundry in Mumbai - Dhobi Ghat (India Travel)
Every day, half a million clothes are sent here for laundry in dhobi ghats like these in Mumbai, India.
Laundry service in Mumbai is a bit off the beaten track. And this is where your clothes might come for a wash. This Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi is the largest in Mumbai. Over half a million clothes get washed here every day. Dhobi in Hindi means someone who does your laundry, and Dhobi Ghat is the place where the laundry is done. The Dhobi will wash, dry, iron and home deliver your clothes, all for a very small price. The Dhobi use these old fashioned coal irons to do the ironing. This area has become a rather curious tourist destination and it is a favorite with photographers. The Dhobi Ghat has over 200 families of Dhobis working here, and they have been working here for generations. The clothes are then hung out to dry on these long lines. I am Premjit Singh, showing you Mumbai.
Inside Mumbai MEGA City Tour Dhobi Ghat, Crawford Market, Sassoon Dock
Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is BIG. It’s full of dreamers and hard-labourers, starlets and gangsters, stray dogs and exotic birds, artists and servants, fishermen and millionaires, and lots and lots of people. It has India’s most prolific film industry, some of Asia’s biggest slums (as well as the world’s most expensive home) and the largest tropical forest in an urban zone. Mumbai is India’s financial powerhouse, fashion epicenter and a pulse point of religious tension.
On my first full day in India, I met up with Mohsin and Mohammad, 2 students that live in Dharavi and operate a tour agency called Inside Mumbai. They took me all over the city visiting some of the more famous landmarks as well as taking me to a few places where tourists usually don't go. From the open air laundry known as the Dhobi Ghat to a sprawling fish market, it was extremely fascinating seeing it all in person. I really felt like I stepped into the pages of National Geographic!

VLOG 395 11/01
Subscribe for more honest and authentic videos about Cambodian life, by a Cambodian-American.
A little bit about my channel...
I mainly focus on creating videos about my travel to Cambodia and the Khmer life in the US. My goal is to document different Cambodian communities around the world. When I'm not traveling, I like to make vlogs about my daily life, which include enjoying good food with friends and family. I do have a background in tech so occasionally I'll review the gear that I'm using to make these videos.
A little about myself...
I came to the US with my father and mother at the age of 1, in the midst of the Khmer Rouge genocide. I lived for almost 40 years without ever returning to Cambodia. It was only recently that I made my first trip back to my homeland and since then, it has been my goal to learn about Cambodia's rich history, religion and document life of Cambodian people living there. In between my trips, I try to visit the different Khmer communities all over the US to see the differences and similarities between them. Please, I do apologize that my Cambodia language skills aren't the greatest, but I am trying to relearn!

The Making of Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) - Discovering Mumbai Featurette
Official Website:
Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) is the story of 4 people from very different backgrounds, whose worlds intersect and leave them forever altered. As they find themselves drawn into compelling relationships, the city finds it's way into the crevices of their lives, separating them even as it brings them closer. Fragments of their experience - seen through a naive video diary, black and white photographic images and painting form a portrait of Mumbai and it's people bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love.
