Dowa Rock Temple and Raja Maha Viharaya, Protected and Mysterious Historic Temple in Sri Lanka
Dowa rock temple (Dowa Raja maha Viharaya) in Sri Lanka is a protected and mysterious Buddhist temple in South Asia. It is situated in Bandarawela-Badulla main road in the Uva province.
Unlike Dambulla rock temple, this one is considered as small and less known place, yet carries a proud history dating back to 2000 years. Legend says King Walagamba turned this cave into a temple.
The main attraction of this temple is the massive rock craved Buddha statue that is tall enough over 39 feet. And also the main gate is another fascinating ornamental design that is unlikely to see anywhere else.

The Dowa Ancient Rock Temple lies between the highway and a small stream. A large statue of Lord Buddha is sculpted on a rock in this temple. It is also the abode of a tribe of monkeys whose antics are amusing.

Dowa Temple, Sri Lanka is located 6km from Bandarawela. Dowa Temple is nicely tucked into secluded and narrow valley. A beautiful Buddha statue carved into a rock face just opposite the temple is similar to Buddha statue at Buduruwagala, Sri Lanka. The small temple is house a reclining Buddha and some paintings of antiquity.

An expedition to the Mysterious Dowa Rock Temple with Ancient Buddaha Statue built by Sinhalese King Walagamba in 2000 BC and a Secret Cave Used by King Ravana in Ancient times. The Secret Cave you can see at the end of the video believes to connect between Ravana Ella and Bogoda Temple in Badulla. Now the save is closed permanently due to security reasons. Dowa Rock Temple is a protected heritage site in Sri Lanka, situated in the central mountains of the Uva province. Dowa is a small, ancient village situated on the Badulla - Bandarawela main road. This temple is situated 210 km (130 mi) east of Colombo and 120 km (75 mi) south of Kandy.
The Dowa rock temple is famous for its large unfinished Buddha image, carved into the rock face, which is considered an example of Mahayana sculpture.
The temple dates back over 2000 years. The area gained the name Dowa as it is located within a ring of mountains, with a river which flows across the plateau.
