2015 Hancock Chamber Annual Meeting
Clay Wagner of Hancock Bank passed the presidential gavel to Mark Henderson of Lazy Magnolia during a standing room only meeting of 300 members of the Hancock Chamber of Commerce on Friday, (January 30) at the Diamondhead Country Club for the 90th Annual Meeting.
During the meeting, the Chamber announced that Clay Wagner was selected as the 2015 Jody Compretta Person of Passion for his leadership in coast-wide initiatives and for his service on numerous boards and commissions throughout the region. “I have been blessed to have great mentors like my parents, Virginia and Fred Wagner. I know my mother is looking down on me today and saying, you work is not yet done. I still have more for you to do.” he said.
Wagner also expressed appreciation to his father, retired architect Fred Wagner. “I was taught that if a community gives you a great place to work, a great place to raise kids, a great place to educate these kids as well as a great place to play…you have a moral obligation to give back to that community. “
Cathy Wilson of the Hancock School District presented Wagner with the commemorative award, a line drawing of artwork by the late Jody Compretta entitled Roads. “Jody believed that for anything worth pursuing there would be obstacles along the road and with passion and persistence you will succeed,” she said.
Clay Wagner presented the annual report. From a recent poll, Hancock Chamber members believe the best way to strengthen economic competitiveness is to improve the business climate. Some of the ways the Hancock Chamber members believe this can be accomplished is by supporting the Port & Harbor to continue pursuing hotel developments; improving major transportation corridors; working to mitigate the costs of wind, flood and fire insurance; attracting more people who work at Stennis Space Center to live in Hancock County; and, assessing the potential for a satellite campus in Hancock County for a center of higher learning.
During the meeting, the Chamber laid out the Legislative Agenda for 2015. Specifically, the Chamber is recommending that the tourism tax rebate law be revamped to be more effective for smaller communities. They also support legislation to extend the Beach Boulevard Scenic Byways across the Coast. The Chamber also supports the Governor’s recommendation to provide a special appropriation of $5 million for state tourism marketing. Other recommendations include designating incentive districts to spur private investment; changing the Metropolitan Statistical Area for the Coast to add Hancock County in with the other two coastal counties; enhancing early childhood education and strengthening the curriculum; offering career and technical curriculum in all high schools; and, taking measures to protect the Mississippi Coast from the LA levee system.
Tish Williams, executive director, announced that the following individuals have been elected to serve on the board for a three-year term: Debbie Benefield, MS Power Company; John Ferrucci, Silver Slipper Casino; Regan Kane, John McDonald Realty; Nikki Moon, Bay Town Inn; and, Mary Perkins, Hancock Library System. The Board has also elected Monica Scott of Hollywood Casino to fill an unexpired board term.
John Ferrucci was elected Vice President. Rea Montjoy, CPA, will continue as Treasurer. Clay Wagner and Angelyn Zeringue will continue as Officers and Past Presidents. Tish Williams will continue as Secretary and Executive Director.
The first order of business for Mark Henderson was to ask the board to elect his four presidential appointments to the board: Ashley Edwards, Hancock County Port & Harbor; Micah Necaise, The First ANBA; Judith Redshaw, Giclee Fine Arts; and, Chuck Underwood, Treasures of the Bay.
“Every community wants to grow businesses, create jobs and build a thriving place to live and work,” said Tish Williams, executive director. “The Chamber matters in our community as a resource that is focused on economic development, jobs, tourism and quality of life.”
The meeting was sponsored by AMR, Hancock Bank, The Peoples Bank, Diamondhead Country Club, Coast Electric Power Association, and Mississippi Power.
The Shapiro Group conducted a nationwide survey and found that 63% of consumers are more likely to buy goods and services from a business that is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. If you have been considering joining the Hancock Chamber go to: hancockchamber.org or call 228-467-9048.
