The Diaz Express #Mosselbay
The Nostalgia of a Train Ride
The Diaz Express along the coastline of #Mosselbay a definite experience to share with friends and family.
We are always looking for something special to do and I have never seen an unhappy person on a train, as a matter of fact, I have never seen a person unhappy to see a train pass. It is the simple rocking of a coach that puts you in a good space, it's part of our history and culture in South Africa and the world and it just warms your heart when you are around a train. Maybe it's the nostalgia of where we come from or where we have been, which ever way you look at it, its part of us.
The Garden Route has been one of the destinations that was renowned for its train experience and since the loss of the infamous Outeniqua choo tjoo it has left a empty space in our Tourism industry along the Southern Cape.
It warms my heart to know that there are people out there that has taken the time and energy, and against all odds, mind you, to bring back a glimpse of our past with a new approach. The Diaz Express is just that, this is a moment in time were you can just lean back, feel the wind in your face and enjoy the Coastline of the Mosselbay area.
Thank you for making my day and thank you for the smiles and laughter that you bring to so many faces. Well done!

MOSSEL BAY’S DIAZ EXPRESS PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE ON TRACK
Mossel Bay’s new light rail passenger service - the Diaz Express - has quickly steamed into the town’s list of ‘must do’ attractions. The service has captured the hearts and the imaginations of visitors and locals alike.
“The Diaz Express was developed in response to the success of a trial service that was run by the George-based Outeniqua Power Van on the Mossel Bay-Hartenbos line at the request of the Mossel Bay Municipality during the 2012-13 summer holidays,” said the company’s managing director, Pierre Poolman.
“It was set up to help relieve the pressure of traffic on the roads between the two destinations, and from the outset it was clear that it was a service that was desperately needed - but also one that the passengers really enjoyed,” he said.
Mr. Poolman said that he and his partners - the managing director of the Outeniqua Power Van, Nicol Marais, and local hotelier and businessman, Albert Wiffen - received official permissions to run the service two days before Christmas, 2014.
The company had previously acquired three Wickham Type 40 Mark II inspection trolleys (built in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s), and had had two of them restored at the Voorbaai Yards in Mossel Bay - the third had recently been restored in Knysna by the Friends of the Choo-Tjoe (a support group that hopes to see the steam-powered Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe return to service between Knysna and George).
Running together, the trolleys provide a capacity of up to 32 passengers per schedule.
Mr. Poolman said that the idea is to provide both a regular, sustainable, year-round shuttle service, as well as a flexible excursion service.
Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm congratulated the company on its successful launch.
“The line follows the coast, and the unhurried pace of the trollies offers wonderful opportunities for viewing the Bay, the beaches, the fynbos, and the mountains from a unique perspective - and you could even be lucky enough to see whales and dolphins in the water from the comfort of your seat,” she said.
“The Diaz Express should appeal to tour groups, independent travellers, and holidaymakers - and given the natural beauty of the route, we expect that it’ll become a major attraction for Mossel Bay and, in fact, for the whole of the Garden Route.”
