DICKEYVILLE GROTTO| Roadtrip to Wisconsin
Follow us on our roadtrip to explore Wisconsin.
The Dickeyville Grotto is located in Dickeyville, WI. It sits on the property of the Holy Ghost Parish. It was created by Father Matthias Wernerus. He was the pastor of Holy Ghost from 1918 - 1931. The grotto took 5 years to complete (1925 - 1930). It was created to bring glory to God and praise to America. It was dedicated on September 14, 1930 with a Pontifical Mass and celebration. 10,000 people from 22 states came to celebrate it.
Construction of the grotto required 6,000 bags of cement and 6 -7 loads of rock (each load weighing 30 tons). The rock came from the Dakotas, Iowa, and Wisconsin quarries. The grotto also contains treasures from all over the world and every state of the Union. It contains: colored glass, gems, antique heirloom pottery, stalagmites, stalactites, sea shells, starfish, petrified sea urchins and fossils, coral, agates, quartz, ores, fool's gold, rock crystals, onyx, amethyst, Indian artifacts, marbles, and coal. There are also many balls that used to be on the stick shifts of old cars. The grotto was created with no blueprints.
Some materials came from far away places such as the Holy Land, Catacombs of Italy, and Rome catacombs of Domitilla and St. Sebastian.
The Soldier's Monument (Crucifixion Group Shrine) was built in memory of 3 parish sons who did not make it back from World War One.

Dickeyville Grotto
While traveling to south western Wisconsin, we drove through the small town of Dickeyville, Judi mentioned that she had been there when she was little and that the local church had a very interesting grotto. So we stopped to take a good look at the Dickeyville Grotto, associated with Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
This grotto was built by the local priest back in the 1920s and 1930s.
For a full detailed explanation of the grotto please see the church's web site:

The Lovely Grotto of Dickeyville, WI
Welcome to the Grotto of Dickeyville, WI. I love to stop at this place when I travel down south and wanted to share it with you. I apologize for some of poor images, yes they are a bit overexposed. They were taken with a Holga camera, which is sometimes kinda hit or miss; that is the fun of shooting with a Holga. Right? Thank you for watching and enjoy. leepacoindustries2014

Dickeyville 4 July 2009
The historic community of Dickeyville in Baltimore, Maryland, celebrates Independence Day with keynote speech by Dr. Herb Smith, a parade, dinner party, fireworks and other events. The theme of the celebration, titled WetheredStock, was the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock rock concert, Wethered is the family name of one of the original founders of the community in 1830. The celebration evokes the hippie spirit of the concert and the culture of the time, magnificently described and presented by Dr. Smith, a university professor and Dickeyville resident. Filmed in location by Steve Davitt and edited by Wilton Martinez.
