Pierce Brosnan Receives Doctor of Environmental Advocacy Honorary Degree from Dickinson College
Pierce Brosnan is a legendary Irish-American actor, film producer, philanthropist, artist, two-time Golden Globe Award nominee and environmentalist who partnered with the NRDC to stop a proposed salt factory at Laguna San Ignacio on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. In doing so, they protected the last pristine breeding ground for the Pacific gray whale. In addition to receiving NRDC’s Forces for Nature Award, Brosnan’s environmental work was recognized with the 2007 Goldene Kamera award.
He, along with his wife, Keely Shaye, have been drawn into a passionate leadership role on numerous environmental issues, lending their voices and efforts to clean air and water campaigns, ocean and marine mammal protection, and defense of land and wildlife habitat. They have opposed environmentally destructive projects and activities around the world, including, for example, the world’s largest industrial salt works, proposed by Mitsubishi Corporation, at the World Heritage Site and gray whale breeding and calving lagoon at Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California; the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility proposed off the coast of Malibu; the unregulated testing and training with high intensity military sonar by the U.S. Navy throughout the world’s oceans; and the continuing slaughter of whales for commercial purposes in violation of the International Whaling Commission’s moratorium. For the past 23 years, they have worked closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council to elevate the organization’s environmental advocacy, both in the United States and internationally.
Most recently, the two worked together on the documentary film Poisoning Paradise, which they co-produced. The film takes audiences on a journey to the seemingly idyllic world of Native Hawaiians, whose communities are surrounded by experimental test sites for genetically engineered seed corn and pesticides. To date, Poisoning Paradise has screened at over 30 prestigious film festivals across the United States and abroad and has won 124 awards—many for best documentary—and has been accepted into the 2018 International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva, the Manchester Film Festival in England and the London International Filmmaker Festival, among others. The film screened in the market at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was sold for worldwide distribution with Gravitas Ventures, which will release Poisoning Paradise in June 2019.

Colleges Receive Backlash From Men Accused Of Sex Crimes
Following years of complaints that sexual assault reports on college campuses weren’t being taken seriously, colleges are finally doing so, and are finding themselves knocked with lawsuits from men who claim they were unfairly suspended or punished. School administrators are feeling caught in the middle. Dana Scaduto, general counsel at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania has testified before Congress on the issue. She states, we're trying to walk the razor's edge between being more attentive to the issue but still being fair to all our students.” At least 75 men have sued their schools since 2013. Their complaints deal mostly with what they say is reverse discrimination and unfair disciplinary proceedings. Most were not even charged with a crime due to the accuser not going to police or a decision by authorities that there wasn’t enough evidence.

American Lawyer, Judge, and Politician: John S. Fine Interview (1952)
John Sydney Fine (April 10, 1893 -- May 21, 1978) was an American lawyer, judge, and politician. A Republican, he served as the 35th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1951 to 1955.
John Fine was born in Newport Township, Pennsylvania, one of nine children of Jacob W. and Margaret (née Croop) Fine. In 1895, the family moved to nearby Nanticoke, where Fine received his early education at local public schools. He milked cows and plowed fields on a coal company farm as a young boy, and later reported on local community news for the Wilkes-Barre Record as a teenager.
After graduating from Nanticoke High School as valedictorian in 1911, Fine studied at the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, earning his law degree in 1914. He was admitted to practice law in Luzerne County (1914) and before the Superior Court of Pennsylvania (1915), opening his own practice in Wilkes-Barre. From 1916 to 1920, he served as Republican chairman of the Fourth Legislative District of Luzerne County.
During World War I, Fine served with the 23rd U.S. Army Engineers, reaching the rank of sergeant. In 1919, while stationed in Ireland, he took postgraduate studies at Trinity College of the University of Dublin. Following his military service, he resumed his law practice and became a partner in the firm Coughlin and Fine. He served as secretary of the Republican County Committee from 1920 to 1922, and as chairman of the Luzerne County Republican Committee from 1922 to 1923. On January 3, 1927, Governor Gifford Pinchot appoitned Fine to fill a vacancy in the Court of Common Pleas of Luzerne County. He was elected to regular ten-year term in November of that year, being re-elected to another term in 1939. He served as a delegate to the 1936 Republican National Convention. In 1939, he married Helene Pennebecker Morgan, to whom he remained married until her death in 1950; the couple had two sons.
In 1942, Fine was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Governor James H. Duff appointed him to fill a vacancy on the Pennsylvania Superior Court on July 15, 1947. He was elected to a permanent term in November 1947, serving in that position until he resigned in 1950 to campaign for governor.
In 1950, after Governor Duff decided to run for the United States Senate, Fine was elected the 35th Governor of Pennsylvania. In the Republican primary, Fine (the favored candidate of Governor Duff) defeated Philadelphia millionaire Jay Cooke (the favored candidate of the conservative Grundy machine). In the general election, he narrowly defeated Democrat Richardson Dilworth, the mayor of Philadelphia, by a margin of 86,000 votes.
Fine was the first Pennsylvania governor to have his inauguration televised.
