We do like Aircraft Breakers so Lasham and Cotswold Airport get monthly visitis to catch up with the Movements.

Didcot Railway Centre - 'The Impossible Dream' 19/04/2019
Testament to the effort, hard work and determination shown by volunteers, The Great Western Society - based at the Didcot Railway Centre - have turned the clock back on three locomotives previously thought to be Impossible Projects: Restoring 6023 King Edward II, converting 'Number 93' back into a Steam Rail Motor, and a New-Build 'Saint' Class.
While at Barry Island Scrapyard after withdrawal, 6023 suffered a derailment during a shunting move, subsequently leading to the trailing driving wheels being damaged beyond repair. During the initial restoration attempt - commencing in 1985, doubt was cast as to the plausibility casting a brand new wheelset for the locomotive. However, after a change of ownership to the Great Western Society, and as engineering methods developed, a new trailing wheelset was cast in 1994 - a first for standard gauge steam in preservation.
GWR Steam Rail Motor - 93 entered preservation with the GWS in 1970, as Auto Trailer - 212, having been converted from a Steam Rail Motor by the GWR in 1934. In 1998, after substantial research and development, work began on constructing a new Power Bogie to resurrect 93 as a Steam Rail Motor, being completed in 2011.
Finally, 'Saint' 2999 Lady of Legend steamed for the first time in 2019, being born out of the ashes of 4900 'Hall' Class - 4942 Maindy Hall. Since 2004, the GWS have been working painstakingly to back-date/convert the 'Hall' into a 'Saint' Class; the former being a direct development of the latter. Their efforts came to fruition in April, when Lady of Legend was launched into public service.
With the trio of Impossible projects complete, the Didcot Railway Centre bore host to 'The Impossible Dream' event over the Easter weekend of the 19th-22nd of April; showcasing the three locomotives rubbing shoulders for the first time in preservation. The Steam Rail Motor could be seen in action on the demonstration Branch Line, paired with Auto Trailer - 92, while the 'King' and the 'Saint' alternated for turns on the main demonstration line - with double-headed running late in the day.

Didcot Railway Centre - Steam Gala - 30/04/2016
Saturday 30th April saw me take a trip up to Didcot for their annual steam gala. This years theme was the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Great Western Railway.
The centre saw two visiting loco's and these were:

Didcot Railway Centre - 'Saint Launch' | 2999 Lady of Legend steams 05/04/2019
The spirit of the 'Saint' Class has been reborn at the Didcot Railway Centre, 66 years after the final 'Saints' were withdrawn from British Railways' service in 1953.
The 'Saint' Class represents a huge turning point in UK steam locomotive design during the 20th century, as a class that would influence a lineage of subsequent 4-6-0 designs across numerous railway companies. With all 77 original members of the 2900 'Saint' Class scrapped upon withdrawal, if a Saint was to steam in preservation it would have to be a 'New-Build'. Starting out with the remains of 4900 'Hall' Class - 4942 Maindy Hall, the Great Western Society - based at the Didcot Railway Centre - began the task of converting the Hall into a Saint Class. The 'Hall' Class was designed as a direct development of the 'Saint' Class, allowing a strong starting point for the Society to work from.
The decision was taken to back-convert the locomotive into the form of an early Saint, from the 'Lady Series'; with straight frames beneath the cab, and square drop-ends in front of the cylinders. In this configuration, it allows the Society to accurately convert the locomotive into an Atlantic 4-4-2 in the future, as per numerous 'Saints' appeared during their working lives, with minimal engineering work required.
After many years of hard-graft, the fruits of Society's efforts are now evident, with 2900 'Saint' Class - 2999 Lady of Legend raising steam as it begins its working life in preservation. There are still a handful of jobs left to do before 'The Lady' will be completely finished, but for all the volunteers behind the project, today marked a spectacular engineering triumph.
With regards to the 'off-beat' valve timings: Owing to engineering delays, time ran out for the group to rectify the valve-timings before the public launch. The Society are aware of the 'off-beat' timings.

Didcot Railway Centre: 'Fire Fly's Farewell' August 2014
Here are a few video clips of our replica Great Western broad gauge locomotive 'Fire Fly' recorded during the August bank holiday weekend 2014. The weekend was entitled 'Fire Fly's Farewell' because it was one of the last times Fire Fly will be in steam before she is taken out of service for an overhaul. If you were unable to attend the event in order to see Fire Fly in operation, we hope to be steaming her at our 'All in a Day's Work' gala on 13/14th September 2014.

Didcot Railway Centre - May Steam Gala - 05/05/13
The May bank holiday weekend saw Didcot Railway Centre hold it's annual May steam gala, this event was of some significance as it saw the return of two Didcot residents from their travels elsewhere. The first was Steam Railmotor no.93, now re-united with her Autotrailer no.92 she has become a Steam Multiple Unit, or Smoo for short. The second was 6023 'King Edward II' who after major repairs completed at Loughborough Works, undertook several months of running in on the Great Central Railway where despite a couple of minor failures she performed very well.
Locomotives running on the 5th were as follows:
- GWR 4300 Class 2-6-0 no.5322
- GWR 6000 'King' Class 4-6-0 no.6023 'King Edward II'
- GWR Steam Multiple Unit nos.93 & 92
This video features a variety of shots from the day including 6023 and 5322 running on the main demonstration line, with some explosive runs by 6023! 6023 is also seen displaying various headboards and reporting numbers such as 'The Red Dragon', 'The Intercity' and 'The Cornish Riviera'. 93 & 92 are also seen running on the branch line, with some enthusiastic driving to boot! This video also features a full sequence of 6023 being turned on the turntable in glorious sunshine, perfectly displaying her in all her magnificence. Towards the end of the day we also get to see 6023 & 5322 double heading on the main demonstration line. The last 10 minutes of the video feature some after hours shunting with 6023 as she positions locomotives for the following day, this gave me an opportunity to grab some shots of 5051 'Earl Bathurst' outside. She is currently undergoing cosmetic restoration into her late 1930's condition which also sees her coupled up to a Collett 4000 gallon tender for the first time in several years. 5051 also now displays one of her old 'Drysllwyn Castle' nameplates on her right-hand side, this was her original name before being renamed to 'Earl Bathurst' in August 1937.

5043 storms through Didcot - The Great Britain V (Day 9) 29-04-12
The final day of the Railway Touring Company's 'The Great Britain V' was to see Tyseley based Castle 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe take control for the run from Bristol to London Paddington.
This run was going to see 5043 take on both Filton and Sapperton banks, with 12 coaches in tow unassisted. This video was supposed to start at Standish Jc, followed by Sapperton and Swindon. However, the weather was awful and we decided to put our safety before 5043. No lack of effort, it was best to play it safe.
Our video is therefore from Didcot Parkway, where 5043 thunders through with a cracking Doppler effect on the whistle.

6024 'King Edward I' pelts through Didcot Parkway on the Bristolian, Twice!
Here we see GWR 60xx, 6024 King Edward I storm through Didcot Parkway, twice! She put on a great performance on the outward journey with her whistling all the way through the platform, with the pannier in the DRC joining in! On the way back she was also absolutely bombing it and she put on a great show for us again! I absolutely enjoyed the show she put on and I look forward to her back on the mainline!
