Playing in Las Vegas' Sandpit with Dig This
Las Vegas is home to the wild, crazy and just plain over-the-top extreme. And that's why it's not really a surprise to find an opportunity for adults to be big kids and jump into a giant sandpit to play with heavy duty machinery. Dig This is located just fifteen minutes from the airport, and allows everyday individuals to jump behind the controls of excavators and bulldozers, to re-live their childhood fantasies.

Abandoned GOLD MINE in NEVADA, outside the city of LAS VEGAS (USA) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Abandoned gold mine, Nevada. I saw this mine right off route 163, on the way to Laughlin from Las Vegas. Sorry about the wind noise, at that time I had a very cheap camera and was still experimenting with videotaping.
Las Vegas, in Nevada’s Mojave Desert, is a resort city famed for its vibrant nightlife, centered around 24-hour casinos and other entertainment options. Its main street and focal point is the Strip, just over 4 miles long. This boulevard is home to themed hotels with elaborate displays such as fountains synchronized to music as well as replicas of an Egyptian pyramid, the Venetian Grand Canal, and the Eiffel Tower.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.

Find glittering, gorgeous emeralds in Hiddenite, only about an hour’s drive from Winston-Salem, NC. The Emerald Hollow Mine is home to the only emerald mine in the United States open for public treasure hunting. There are sluiceways where you can check out findings from the mine, or you can pay to do your own prospecting, digging, and hunting for a small fee.
Crater of Diamonds State Park, Murfreesboro, Arkansas
Want to mine for diamonds? Murfreesboro is the place to go. The Crater of Diamonds State Park, 120 miles from Little Rock, AR, is the only existing mine where visitors can prospect for diamonds and keep their findings. Stay at the park campsite and enjoy wildlife and natural scenery as well as some sparkling stones.

Looking for aquamarines? Head to Spruce Pine’s own Gem Mountain. The Blue Ridge Mountains are the perfect place to prospect for the beautiful blue stones as well as rubies and moonstones. Onsite gemologists can inspect your findings to see if they’re the real deal, and gem-cutters can spruce up and turn your gems into pieces of jewelry before you head home.
Cherokee Ruby Mine, Franklin, North Carolina
Search for rubies inside the Cherokee Ruby Mine. You can sluice through rocks and dirt with a screen and look for precious treasures, including sapphires, garnets, and rutile. The price of admission is low, and the fun level is high, so make it a family outing. The mine is open for gem hunting to the public from April through October. The backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains will make it a beautiful summer vacation.
Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine, Philipsburg, Montana
One of the most beautiful states in the country, Montana is also a great place to go gem hunting. Check out Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine for some stellar prospecting. What will you find when you sift through the dirt and gravel at Gem Mountain? Sapphires, and lots of them.

The Morefield Mine, just under an hour from Richmond, VA, is known for its vast amount of amazonite. Prospecting here may also reward you with garnet, amethyst, beryl, topaz, and many other minerals. There are mining opportunities here for all skill levels. Prospectors can use the sluicing technique or collect from the mine dumps. The Morefield Mine has its own exhibit of stones onsite as well as one at the world-famous Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine, Virgin Valley, Nevada
Colorful and unusual, opal is an eye-catching gem. Mine your own opals at the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine. This mine has produced very valuable stones, some worth upwards of $50,000. Bring tools and buckets. You’ll be doing some serious digging to get to the treasure here, but your hard work could pay off. The mine is open from May to September.
Bonanza Opal Mine, Denio, Nevada
If you’re gem hunting for fire opals, visit the Bonanza Opal Mine in Denio, Nevada. The mine is open from May to September.
Crystal Grove Diamond Mine, St. Johnsville, New York
New York is home to Broadway shows, plenty of shopping, Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty, but did you know New York is a great place to mine for gemstones? Beyond Las Vegas: Nevada’s Wild Basin and Range Region Needs Protection
Just two hours from Las Vegas, Nevada’s Basin and Range region boasts unspoiled land rich in historical, cultural, and natural resources. To preserve these wilderness treasures, residents are urging protection for the area.
Keeping this large area intact would help conserve irreplaceable Native American rock art, preserving a glimpse into the lives and culture of some of the earliest Americans. Permanent protection would shield wildlife habitat for mule deer, pronghorn, elk, and greater sage-grouse. It also would protect the area’s rare and sensitive plants—one of which, the White River catseye, is found nowhere else on the planet.
Read more about why Nevada’s Basin and Range is a unique area that deserves permanent conservation:

Rock hounding (crystals) at Highway 97 and Westside road.
Took the kids out rock hounding today, looking for zeolites, quartz crystals, Amethyst, and found some citrine too. The new Westside road interchange off highway 97 in West Kelowna has blasted out some of Mount Boucherie's basalt revealing many fresh vugs full of all sorts of Silicates. Some quite exciting.

One of the driest cities in the world is one of my favorite places to visit. Las Vegas. 2.2 million people live in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Every day, these 2.2 million people all need to drink water, bathe in water, wash their stuff with water, water their plants and lawns, and even play in water. The average household in Vegas uses around 222 gallons (840 liters) of water per day. So that’s 489 million gallons (1.9 billion liters) for everyone per day.
That’s a lot of water needed in a city that gets just over 4 inches, or 10 cm, of rain each year. And recently, the city suffered its longest drought on record- a period of 116 straight days without rain.
So where the heck does Las Vegas get its water? How can all of this continue to exist? Especially something like this in one of the driest places on earth? Well most of the water Las Vegas gets originated here….the Colorado River. A river that supplies water for...you know...just seven states in the country? I’m not joshing you. That one river is the lifeblood of these seven states. Because they all rely on the same river, they all signed an agreement called the Colorado River Compact, and it divided up the water from the river in this way (table). This agreement gave 97 billion gallons of water per year for Nevada. At the time the agreement went into effect, 1928, this was way more water than Las Vegas needed. Heck, it had less than 5,000 people living there back then.
In 1935, the U.S. government completed the Hoover Dam, which then created the largest reservoir in the United States. Lake Mead. Over the past few decades, however, Lake Mead has started to go dry due to the recent 20-year long drought in the American Southwest and increased demand from Vegas. The lake hasn’t reached full capacity since 1983, and is currently at about 40% capacity, meaning it’s now technically the second-largest reservoir in the United States after nearby Lake Powell. See that bathtub ring? That’s how high the water used to be.
Back in 2008, two researchers predicted Lake Mead would completely run out of water by 2021 if the drought continued and people in Vegas didn’t dramatically cut back on water. Since 2008, Vegas residents HAVE dramatically cut back on water, and the drought overall hasn’t affected the area as badly, but the Southern Nevada Water Authority has lately looked to other possible sources for water just in case Lake Mead DOESN’T make it.

Treasure Cache Cash Found in Nevada
While on a metal detecting trip to Nevada, I find a Cache of Chinese coins dating from 1600's - 1800's of the Ch'ing Dynasty. The Chinese were hired to mine the gold fields and build railroad lines so more people and supplies could be brought in. They usually lived outside of the main camps and used their own money. Most Chinese coins are not real valuable, but the history behind the people who lost them and the sites they are found is enjoyable to experience.
