Vancouver PUBLIC ART: DIGITAL ORCA by Douglas Coupland, Vancouver Convention Centre, Coal Harbour
Digital Orca by Douglas Coupland at the Vancouver Convention Centre at Coal Harbour
Artist's Statement:
The Digital Orca sculpture acts as a sculptural conduit that allows the viewer to travel in time between the past and the future, also allowing the viewer to marvel along the way at the people and activities that created Vancouver’s thriving harbour culture. The sculpture also addresses the massive changes currently reshaping the economy of the Province.
Through the act of pixelizing an orca whale in three dimensions - a process that creates a crackling and unexpected sensation in the viewers mind - the orca cliché is turned upside down and what we thought we knew well is rendered exciting and new. On closer inspection, the colours and materials used in the sculpture’s surfacing evoke the everyday life of the harbour and the diversity of those workers on the working waterfronts of the Province.

Orca Whales in Vancouver Harbour: Feb 2017
We were boating back from a day trip to Bowen Island and saw the small pod of whales. We drifted along watching them for about 45 minutes as they circled through the harbour.
Digital Orca
A sculpture set up in 2009 adjacent to the Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver , BC. The artist Douglas Coupland wanted to explore the digital realm and chose a Killer Whale as the subject.

Digital Orca of Douglas Coupeland
Perhaps the most interesting artwork in Vancouver, Digital Orca is a pixelated sculpture created by artist Douglas Coupleland.
How awesome is this, right? I mean, if I didn't know any better I'd swear these photos were computer generated. But since Digital Orca is one of Vancouver's most popular landmarks, featured on Pan Pacific Vancouver blog, you can believe it's real. Located near the Vancouver Convention Center, Digital Orca looks completely different when viewed from various angles.
Local chronicler Douglas Coupland, is also the author author of Generation X, Microserfs, City of Glass and other impressive works of art in Vancouver.
