Travel Back Old Taipei | Dihua District 台北迪化街
Growing up in #Taiwan I've always known Dihua Street strictly from TV during Chinese New year. Since this is an area where the older generations prefer to shop for their new year ingredients, this district in Taipei never peaked an interest in me. I took the #Taipei metro with my mom who was hoping this would be a nice little getaway from the hustle bustle in downtown Taipei. Dihua district was exactly that because it took us back in time to a period where Baroque architecture was the trend. The variety of dried goods has been particularly intriguing from the aroma to its colors. These are the type of products that you simply can't find in the local grocery stores or 7-11.

Dihua Street (迪化街) during Chinese New Year, a Traditional and Historical Street, Taipei, Taiwan
Dihua Street is the most popular grocery traditional market for shopping Chinese New Year's goods. It is located in Datong District of Taipei City, Taiwan, with a total length of 800 meters. On ordinary days, Dihua is a relatively quiet street. However, the street will be lively and crowded few weeks before Chinese Lunar New Year.
Built in the 1850s, Dihua Street was the major trading center for Chinese herbs and medicines, dried goods, fabrics, as well as teas since it is near the Dadaocheng port. The street has became a market place for Chinese New Year's groceries since 1996; there are various stalls selling bamboo or wooden crafts, candies from Asia, Chinese medicines and herbs, Chinese and Japanese snacks, crops, dried foods, fabrics, incenses, New Year decorations, spices, and teas. Candies, dried squids, and nuts are popular items in the market. The vendors usually display their goods in huge bags; some bags are even taller than five feet high. Visitors may also see piles of foods and candies on tables which look like little mountains. The vendors use megaphones or simply yell out aloud to attract people’s attention. It is quite interesting to hear the lively shouts of vendors and to enjoy the New Year atmosphere. Some vendors will even hand out free samples for visitors to push more sales.
Besides the samplings and the lively scene, the historical architectures in traditional Fujian style, Baroque style, western style, as well as red lanterns and other New Year decorations have also made Dihua Street a popular tourist attraction. It is indeed an excellent place to enjoy the joyful atmosphere and to experience Taiwan culture.

Dihua Street / 迪化街 is a street located in the Dadaocheng area of Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan winding from the south of the district to close to the north in the old village of Dalongdong. The street, then known as Centre Street (中街), was constructed during the 1850s, when many commercial entities belonging to Quanzhou-originating owners moved in from the nearby village of Bangka. Since then and throughout the rest of the 19th century, Dihua Street has been an important centre for commerce in Taiwanese products and produce such as Chinese medicinal herbs, fabrics, incense materials, and for the post-processing of Taiwanese tea.
The name Dihua was given in 1947 by the Republic of China government, in reference to the city of Dihua (now called Ürümqi) in Xinjiang, and effectively joins a string of older streets in this area of Taipei existing prior to the Chinese Civil War. Locals living in the district refer to the portion of the street north of the Minsheng West Road (民生西路) as “north street” (北街), and the portion south as “south street” (南街). Being the oldest street in Taipei (with sections in existence since the rule of Dutch Formosa from 1624–1661), its architecture has been under preservation and conservation efforts by the city. Modern Dihua Street along with its surrounding neighborhood and streets, known as the Dihua Street commercial loop (迪化街商圈), remain one of the most commercially active in Taipei with transactions in excess of 3 billion US dollars.
Although a relatively calm street during most times of the year Dihua street bustles with people during the two weeks before Chinese New Year. The residents of Taipei flock to the street during these times to buy necessities for the festivities, while tourists visit for the traditional Fujian decorations, atmosphere, and architecture. The street continues to be a major destination during Chinese New Year festivities, with 750,000 people visiting the street in the two weeks leading up to the holiday.
The hiring of clean-up crews and rental of store-fronts to seasonal merchants during the two weeks is an important source of revenue for many residents.
