Alma Residents & Businesses Welcome 'Unusual' Winter Snow

Bannack Ghost Town - Is It Really Haunted
Bannack Ghost Town
Located about 30 miles outside of Dillon Montana. The visitors center is open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm during the summer months. It's closed in the winter months, usually from mid October through the middle of May. There are port a potties outside in the parking lot and a regular flush restroom inside the visitor center. There are cold drinks and snacks also available inside the visitors center. Smoking is only allowed in the parking area, it is prohibited in the town site. No metal detectors. Pets on a leash are allowed. Most of the buildings on site are open for the public to walkthrough. The cemetery up on the hill overlooks the town and gives you a very good view of Bannack. There are a lot of photo ops, so make sure to bring your camera (and charger). I wish I could have captured more video, but my camera ran out of battery.

Montana Ag Network: Controlling leafy spurge with sheep on Tippet Rise Ranch
Noxious weeds are devastating to a healthy landscape and that's why a ranch in South Central Montana uses both art and sheep to promote good land stewardship.
“Primarily we’re here to help control this leafy spurge population,” said Ben Lehfeld, a rancher from Lavina. “This noxious weed that’s around quite a bit of the state of Montana.”
Noxious weeds are a threat to Montana’s landscape, including native rangeland like what's found on the Tippet Rise Ranch near Fishtail. That’s why each year, the Lehfeldt family brings their sheep to aid in the control of noxious weeds like leafy spurge.
“In some of these areas where it’s really dense, we really need to attack it from several different angles,” said Lehfeldt. “Sheep and biological control are one of those major angles that we focus on. We use our Peruvian H2A sheep herders to really guide are sheep bands this time of year into these yellow patches and take the flowers off to limit the seed production, the rhizomes, and really give the grass a chance to not be completely out competed in these areas.”
He said unlike cattle, the sheep will eat leafy spurge
“The cattle will not come in these leafy spurge areas, which allows it to out compete the grasses, which ultimately allows for a lower amount of AUM’s throughout these areas. So, it’s important to have some support of plan and being proactive like this Tippet Rise Ranch and using biological sheep control as well as some bugs that can help with leafy spurge, said Lehfeldt.
Herbicides can also be used for control, but using biological methods like sheep works well for the Tippet Rise Ranch.
“Herbicides are an option and can be used especially when you have a starting leafy spurge or population or notice it in your backyard, you can eliminate a patch because it hasn’t because it hasn’t gotten those tremendous amount of tape roots and Rhizomes,” said Lehfeldt. “When you come to a spot like this that is somewhat out of control with leafy spurge, you’re into more of a control environment. In our case, we’re using this leafy spurge as a food source to produce food and fiber.”
For traditional Montana ranching families like the Lehfeldt’s, they appreciate the relationship they have with the Tippet Rise Ranch and their willingness to keep livestock grazing part of their unique ranch operation.
“So, it’s great to have these people that aren’t necessarily native Montanans but have come in with an idea that they want to continue the native grazing, add their special touches with sculptures and symphonies and different tourist ideas but keep kind of the Montana way of life with the grazing of the sheep and cattle which add a lot of value their property in our eyes and I think in their eyes too, said Lehfeldt.

Explore Colorado Dinosaur Ridge
Head just 20 minutes west of Denver and you can walk in the steps of dinosaurs. It really is a trek through time at Dinosaur Ridge, just off Alameda Parkway in Morrison. Dinosaur Ridge is famous for its tracks site. There are over 320 tracks from different types of dinosaurs in a fairly small area. The tracks are easy to see and there’s even one area where you can literally walk in the footprints of dinosaurs. A hundred million years ago, instead of the ridge and foothills that are there now, the area was a flat sandy beach with rivers flowing into the ocean.
At one, about 92 million years ago, everything in Colorado was underwater. There’s proof of that with ripple marks at Dinosaur Ridge and you can also find seashells in the Morrison and Golden areas, among other spots in Colorado.
On the other side of the ridge, which is right across from the 300 million year old Red Rocks, is an area where you can see the evidence of rivers that were like braided rivers in a swamp or bog area that flowed into the ocean. You can see the stream channels, bones in boulders and rocks, and even a cross section view, or sideways view, of dinosaur footprints. The sandstone on the river side of the ridge is finer than the tracks site side.
Just a short drive away and right across from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden is the 1.5 mile Tricertops Trail. On the trail, you can climb in and out of the areas that were clay pits that have been mined. Left of the sandstone, you can see entire ecosystems from plant fossils to even some T-Rex tracks. It’s free to visit the Triceratops Trail. Just make sure you are wearing comfy shoes and clothes for the walk in and out of pits.
At Dinosaur Ridge, shuttle bus tours last 45 minutes. The tour is $4 for ages 4 and up. Entry into the exhibit hall at the visitor center is $1 for ages 4 and up. Children ages 3 and under are free for both.
Summer camps are back this year at Dinosaur Ridge. They are offered several weeks this summer. Cost is $275 for members and $300 for non-members. Yearly family memberships are $40 and individual is $25.
If you want a great hike, then head up on the Dakota Ridge Trail on top of Dinosaur Ridge. It’s about 2.2 miles from the trailhead at Dinosaur Ridge over to the parking lot near I-70. Just watch out for rattlesnakes along the top of the ridge, just like you’ll find hiking in other spots like Green Mountain and even in Red Rocks Park.
