Pikeville, Kentucky - Octavia Hatcher Was Buried Alive - Does She Still Haunt The Town?
The Appalachian Mountains are full of tall tales and ghost stories that have been passed down for generations. Many are based on actual events, such as the following Pike County, Kentucky tale of Octavia Hatcher…
James Hatcher was a prominent young businessman in the Pikeville, KY area in the late 1800s. He would eventually become one of the largest landowners and a giant in both the timber and coal industries well into the early 1900s. In 1889, James Hatcher married young Octavia Smith and a couple of years later the couple had a son together, Jacob Hatcher. Little Jacob only lived a few days before he died leaving his mother heartbroken and depressed. A couple of months after Jacob's death, Octavia Hatcher became increasingly ill and bedridden eventually slipping into a coma. After repeated attempts to revive her failed, Octavia Hatcher was finally pronounced dead by her doctor. As Octavia was not embalmed and it happened to be an unusually hot spring, the decision was made to have her funeral and bury her quickly.
A few days after her funeral several other people in Pikeville started to come down with similar symptoms that Octavia had exhibited, only the others recovered from the illness. It soon became known that the illness was a type of “sleeping sickness” possibly brought on by an insect bite. James Hatcher began to suspicion that Octavia had the same condition and feared that she might have been buried alive. He frantically had her casket unearthed and opened only to find a very disturbing and gruesome sight. Octavia had indeed awakened from the sickness. Her face was frozen in a look of terror and her nails were bloody from her vain attempt to dig herself out of the grave. The interior lining of the casket had been shredded by her frantic scratching. Octavia was reburied and James Hatcher never fully recovered from the loss of his wife and son. James Hatcher had a life-size monument of Octavia with their infant son erected above her grave as a tribute. James had a special coffin made for when he died that had a latch on the inside so that he would be able to free himself in the event he was buried alive.
Several haunting incidents have been reported in the years since Octavia Hatcher's death. Some say her statue turns backwards on the anniversary of her death as if she is turning her back on Pikeville for not rescuing her. Others say late at night you can hear the crying of a woman at her burial sight. Some even claim if you put your ear to the ground at her grave you can still hear the scratching… - Shane
