The Dilston Physic Garden
Once upon a time doctors grew herbs for their patients, not only were the patients patient, so were the doctors
A unique venture near Corbridge, Northumberland, providing visitors with the opportunity to learn about the wonderful healing properties of over 600 medicinal plants growing in the garden
The Physic Garden near Corbridge is a kind of wonderful outdoor medicine chest, full of healing herbs all signposted as to what aspects of health they promote and how. Unique to the North East of England the garden is open to the public from April to September and runs a series of exciting courses on herbal medicines (led by the local Herbalist and including tree and hedgerow plants), cooking with herbs, flower essences and magic plants, amongst other.
With over 600 herb plants set out in a beautiful acre of the Tyne valley, and lots of fascinating features such as the Japanese Shinto gate at the entrance, Wind sculptures, a good luck ' Cloutie' tree, plus specialist areas such as Heart and Mind, Aphrodisiac, Sweet dreams and Chill pill, the Physic garden offers a novel kind of educational experience with added enjoyment guaranteed!
The Garden is a wonderful vistor attraction - not just for those with a particular interest in medicinal herb plants, but also for all garden lovers and it makes a great fun day out for all the family! We aim to particularly encourage group visits from young people (Schools, Universities, Clubs and even Nurseries - a local group of toddlers had great fun rolling on the chamomile lawn this year!). There is also the opportunity to purchase a variety of plants, herbal preparations and booklets.
We are also keen to enlist more volunteers who could help not only with keeping the herbs in order (like gypsies and like to wander far outside their beds), but also show people round (expertise in medicine, nursing, aromatherapy, botany, chemistry, pharmacology would all be appropriate).
