Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Maine in 360°
I took a ride out to Pemaquid, Maine with my wife to visit the in-laws. As dinner was cooking, we took a quick trip over to Pemaquid Point Light, one of our favorite spots in Maine. The tide was up and the surf was rough, a true New England coastal scene.
Adventures on Vancouver Island | Whale Watching | Travel Vlog
Click here to watch Part 1 of my road trip
Vancouver Island is spotted with lots of a small variety of deer that seem pretty tame. We often saw them standing on the side of the roads or next to restaurant patios munching leaves.
My dad took me on a whale watching tour which was over 4 hours long and only cost about $115 CAD. We saw at least 3 different pods of orcas. The first two in the video are resident whales, they are lead by matriarch grandmothers whose next two generations are part of their pods as well. If you notice the very large whale, he is the bull of one of the pods and almost twice as big as the females. His dorsal fin alone is almost two metres high. The pods fed on seals while we watched them and the oil from the seal fat floated to surface once they had finished lunch... The pod displays several rolls and tail slaps to celebrate their kill. The guide on our zodiac was very knowledgeable and advocated for people to observe animals in their natural habitat rather than paying Sea World which I really liked. He told us that killer whales often stay with their mothers and family pods for life (the females will sometimes leave to mate and bring their babies back), orcas have a massive brain with a whole segment for emotions that humans don't even have. Zoologists believe they feel much more than we do and develop very deep family bonds.
We moved on to see the resident whale pod which feeds on salmon near the US coast. They weren't as active as the other pods and we couldn't get as close to them, there are US laws protecting them from people on the water.
My dad expressed that it made him sad so many people crowded the whales while they were feeding. I agreed but the whale watching boats all turned off their engines when they got close to the pods. (The was one yacht that pulled up that was covered in Aussies that didn't turn their's off, and of course their ship was super loud. Our guide asked them if they turn off their engine and they did turn off one but wouldn't turn off the second one because of their fridge...)
We then moved on to a huge rock where a lot of cormorants and seagulls roosted. And drove to another rock outcropping where seals were sunbathing with a couple of pups. They were so cute so it was a bit sad that the whales had just eaten a couple of them... But whales gotta eat!
The trip was more than worth the cost, I'd definitely recommend it. I've been wanting to see whales in the wild my whole life, I was not disappointed.
The next day, we went to a couple points of interest on the island. The first was Cathedral Grove - an old growth forest of Douglas Firs. The trees were really amazing and it was *FREE* to go.
After that we stopped in Coombs, saw the infamous roof goats and checked out one of the hippie shops, Coombstock. We pigged out on Mexican food for lunch and stopped at a fish market to pick up dinner on the way home. The local salmon was so amazing, it was so buttery and good - I'm totally ruined for salmon for life.
The next day I flew out early in the morning from Nanaimo to Vancouver and connected to Ottawa. I'll definitely be visiting BC again soon.
