Study Abroad: Fossil Walk at Lyme Regis, Jurassic Coast
Lyme Regis is a coastal town in Dorset, England. The site is a part of the Jurassic World Heritage and the town is noted for fossils found on its beaches and in the cliffs. Many of the earliest discoveries of dinosaurs were made in the area around Lyme Regis. Mary Anning found many of them.
Lyme Regis Museum arrange Fossil Walks. The expert Fossil Hunters Paddy Howe and Chris Andrew guided us on the beach. It was a very inspiring day! Thank you!

Jurassic Coast Dorset Fossil Finds
In tribute to Mary Anning (from 200 years in her future) I present these images of fossils from my pilgrimage to the Dorset Coast of England. The Royal Society and the Lyme Regis Museum are presently celebrating the accomplishments of Mary Anning -- and so am I. She sure found some amazing things before any established academics did -- though they weren't shy about taking credit apparently.
I collected these fossils (and took pictures of ones too big to collect) in February of 2007 on the beaches at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, and below Golden Cap.
Many of the ammonites were preserved in pyrite or marcasite, and many had yellow/green calcite in the chambers -- very beautiful. So far -- after almost 4 years -- all but one of the ammonites have remained shiney and free of corosion.
Coming from the States as a tourist, I wondered how commercial collectors would be if I met any on the beaches. I met three commercial guys and they were all very nice and helpful. I think they knew I wasn't really after the same large specimens and slabs they were looking for. I also had the pleasure of a chance meeting with Mr. Martin Foster and his friend on the beach below Golden Cap. They sure had some great collecting stories to share as we waited for the tide. I also met a very helpful gentleman named Bernie on the beach near Seatown.
Anyway, it was a great trip and I found a lot more than I expected. The cliffs are extensive and erosive and full of fossils to replentish the beach. I hope I can go back again...

Lyme Regis Fossil Festival
The next annual Lyme Regis Fossil Festival will take place on 3-5 May, 2013 (fossilfestival.com). Set in the heart of the stunning Jurassic Coast - England's only natural World Heritage Site, Lyme played a key role in the birth of the earth sciences. Mary Anning and her brother Joseph uncovered a huge ichthyosaur in 1811 when she was only 12, and she went on to find the first two plesiosaurs and the first pterosaur outside Germany. Today local fossil collectors continue to unearth spectacular new specimens, and even the casual visitor can trip over vertebrae and ammonites on the beach.
The Fossil Festival encourages visitors of all ages to enjoy the incredible natural history right at their feet. There is a free Grand Marquee on the beach full of hands-on art and science, and well as walks, talks, exhibitions, a Fossil Fair and performances and other extraordinary experiences. We welcome more than 50 scientists from our partners, including the Natural History Museum, Natural England, British Antarctic Survey, Jurassic Coast team, Plymouth University, Dorset Geologists Association, Lyme Regis Museum, Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, University of Portsmouth, the National Trust, RockWatch, National Museum of Wales, Isle of Wight's Dinosaur Isle, RSPB, MEMO, and many more.
We've a giant Travelling Pliosaur Cinema, and OnBoard - the flight simulator that takes you above, along and below the Jurassic Coast, as well as back to Pangaea.
Don't miss the fun - once you've been you'll always come back!
Mary Anning - Lyme Regis Museum
With the opening of the Mary Anning Wing at Lyme Regis Museum in 2017, we met up with some of the museums friends and patrons to discuss what a remarkable woman Mary Anning was.
Sir David Attenborough (broadcaster and Naturalist), Tracy Chevalier (Author of 'Remarkable Creatures'), and Paddy Howe (Local Fossil Hunter) all give their thoughts on 'The Mother of Palaeontology'.

MONSTER JURASSIC COAST FOSSIL AT DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM
The giant jaws of a huge marine reptile is on permanent display at the Dorset County Museum from 8 July -- unveiled by Sir David Attenborough.
Dating back around 155 million years, the skull of a Pliosaur (Pliosaurus Kevani) was discovered on the nearby Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and is one of the largest and best preserved fossils of its kind ever found.
Belonging to a creature up to 18m in length, the skull is a staggering 2.4 m long and is believed to have possessed the biggest bite of all time -powerful enough to break a small car in half.
