House of Sallust, Pompeii, Italy
The House of Sallust at Pompeii (Region VI, Insula 2, Building 4) is a house that dates back to the 3rd century BC. It retains a lot of First Style paintings and is dominated by its vast atrium. The garden was accessed through the tablinum and was a strange, narrow trapezoidal shape which filed the gap between the back of the house and the east wall of the insula. A small garden with peristyle was added to the right (south) of the entrance in the 1st century BC. One theory is that the house had, by then, been converted into a hotel and that this new garden and surrounding chambers were the owner's private quarters. The house was better preserved originally - but it was hit by Allied bombs in 1943 during WW2.

Picture 8: The first panel in the famous frescos from the Villa of the Mysteries which is just outside the city of Pompeii. The fresco depicts an Initiation of a young woman into a mystery cult of Dionysus and spans the entire room. The first panel shows the young woman being groomed for the initiation process.
Picture 9: The second and third panels of the Initiation process from the frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries. The initiate is shown with mythical creatures, being whipped by winged figures.
Picture 10: The fourth panel of the Initiation fresco, depicting the end of the Initiation process, including a feast with current members of the cult. (There is one more panel, but it could not be seen since the room was roped off and the panel was against the wall of the doorway with the rope.)
Picture 11: The original 'Dog' plaster cast from Pompeii, Italy which is held in the museum at the country villa site of Boscoreale. The dog was chained in a yard and fought to get free before the toxins killed him and made his muscles contract. Viewing the cast you can see the fur, paws, collar and teeth.
Picture 11: The Boar from the site of Pompeii, Italy. On the Boar you can see the bones- the only plaster cast containing original bone- which appear as brittle reeds to the viewer because of their fragile and damaged state. The Boar is in the museum at the country villa site of Boscoreale.
Picture 12: A room in the Oplontis Villa, the country villa of Poppea- Nero's second wife. The room has a shrine area- lararium- for the household gods. It also has two windows which open into 'plant' areas between rooms.

about the city.
Picture 19: A city and bay along the Amalphi Coast where the sun is setting behind the portion of land stretching into the ocean creating the bay.
Colors of Ancient Pompeii - Villa of the Mysteries
The Villa of the Mysteries (Italian: Villa dei Misteri) is a well-preserved suburban Roman villa on the outskirts of Pompeii, southern Italy, famous for the series of frescos in one room, which are usually thought to show the initiation of a young woman into a Greco-Roman mystery cult. These are now probably the best known of the relatively rare survivals of Ancient Roman painting. Like the rest of the Roman city of Pompeii, the villa was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 and excavated from 1909 onwards (long after much of the main city).
Beyond the Villa of Diomedes lies the Villa of the Mysteries, famous for having one of the most important decorative fresco collections in the Roman world. The villa originally dates from the 2nd century BC, but its current layout was set between 70 and 60BC.

Roman Villa San Marco near Pompeii Italy
The Villa San Marco is one of the major seaside Roman villas at Castellammare di Stabia, well-known for its paintings and destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Still only partly-excavated it is being restored and not all of the remains are accessible. Apart from specialized tour groups, almost no-one goes there but it is hugely impressive compared to most of what there is at Pompeii. Reaching it is insanely difficult if you have no idea how to get there. Take the Circumvesuviana train to Via Nocera Station. Turn left out of the station and head west, taking the left fork after a couple of hundred yards. Follow this road round as it curves to the south and goes uphill. You'll soon see a very minor road called Strada Varano that double back and curves on up to the north. Take this to the end, where it meets Passeggiata Archaeologica, a busy road (a driveway by this junction leads to the Villa Arianna). Follow this for about 1km as it curves 90 degrees to the north. You'll pass another road joining this one and about 100 yards further on is a driveway down to the villa. It's on Google Earth at 40°42'10.79N 14°29'55.59E

Pompei - Teatro Grande, Teatro Piccolo e Quadriportico - Pompeii theaters

Villa dei Misteri - Cult of Dionysus fresco, Scavi di Pompeii
Let me show you around the Villa Dei Misteri, a 2000 year old well preserved ancient Roman villa at Scavi di Pompei
The villa was completely covered in volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The ash preserved the villa. Some 1700 years later the villa was excavated along with the town of Pompeii.
The main attraction at the villa is a fresco depicting a woman's initiation into the mysterious cult of Dionysus. Dionysus was a Greek God. The ancient Greeks settled in Southern Italy which is the reason why the ancient Romans were worshipping a Greek God.

Villa di Poppaea, Oplontis - Emperor Nero's wife's residence near Pompeii
Two thousand years ago a woman called Poppaea Sabina lived in this large seaside villa in the ancient Roman town of Oplontis (now Torre Annuziata) near Pompeii.
Poppaea was the second wife of the brutal Roman Emperor Nero who persecuted the early Christians.
Poppaea is believed to have been the owner of the villa although some historians think that the villa was owned by Emperor Nero himself. Regardless of who was the actual owner, both Nero and Poppaea used the seaside villa.as their second home.
Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD.79 the villa, also known as Villa Oplontis, was buried in ash and lay undiscovered until the first phase of excavation began in the 1800's. The second round of excavation began in the 1960s.
To reach the well preserved villa with its beautiful frescoes and Olympic sized pool, take the Circumvesuviana train line and get off at Torre Annunziata - Oplonti (one stop from Pompeii Scavi). On exiting the train station turn left, walk to the end of the street then turn right and continue walking down the hill. The villa is easy to spot and is only a 5 minute walk from the train station.
