In this episode we travel to the Western most point of the Australian mainland - Steep Point!! Then we go one step further and take the barge across to Dirk Hartog Island which is absolute paradise!!!
We left our caravan at Hamelin Station and swagged it on the beach for 4 nights. This has been one our favourite trips, so many beautiful beaches and the campsites all to yourself.
An epic adventure to one of the most amazing places you will ever go in OZ!!

For those uninitiated with this out of the way oasis, it’s about 2 planes, a barge, and a 10-hour four-wheel-drive journey from Sydney. To put it bluntly, it’s OTHER side of Australia.

To be exact, it’s the country’s most westerly point and it’s a mission to get to but for good reason. It’s a place where scrub covered sand dunes meet the pristine Gascoyne Coast and all some of the world’s rarest species of native birds and turtles go to nest near the crystal clear waters, virtually unaffected by human impact.

In Part 2 of the Dirk Hartog Island series, we get the unique opportunity to watch sea turtles nesting, by chance we were there in the right season. We also check out Urchin Point, The Block, Mystery Beach and Quoin Head.
The East side of the island is perfect for sea kayaking, while kayaking on the sheltered side of teh island we saw turtles, sting rays and stack and stacks of sharks! But I guess they call it shark bay for a reason ????

Dirk Hartog Island should be on every 4wders bucket list, it is an off the beaten track adventure. It is quite remote with the only way on and off the island by means of a vehicle barge. The closest fuel station is 200km away from the bottom of the island, and being completely self sufficient is a must.
The Island is located in Western Australia's Gascoyne region, as part of Shark Bay. An area known for its fantastic fishing and the amazing sea life. Sharks, Turtles, Sting Rays, and Manta Rays are an everyday sight.
In this episode we check out Notch Point, Louisa Bay, Turtle Bay and Cape Inscription. The snorkelling at Cape Inscription is off the hook.

Follow the journey of Dutch captain, Dirk Hartog, who landed in Shark Bay in Western Australia as the first European to step foot on Australia soil or “New Holland” as it was known for 150 years.
Later British captain, James Cook, claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia for Great Britain on 22 August 1770, naming eastern Australia 'New South Wales'.
