A Guided Tour of Dirleton Castle by Dirleton Primary P6/7 Class
This guided tour of Dirleton Castle, East Lothian, by Ms Cooper and Dirleton Primary School's P6/7 class represents the finale of a term-long learning project during which the class have used the context of the castle and its history to create an engaging, highly relevant source of learning opportunities. This epitomises the ethos of Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence, in particular its encouragement of active learning
The video shows the learners in costumes they have designed and made themselves, and performing, in character, in front of an audience including members of the public, scripts they have created and memorised to tell visitors about the castle's history in the manner of professional character actors.
Thanks are due to Historic Scotland and the Dirleton Castle staff for their support with the project.
Dirleton Castle and Gardens, East Lothian.
The Ruthvens of Perthshire acquired the castle through marriage, building a new lodging to house a family 15 children.
The noble life at Dirleton was rarely disturbed by the sound of war. Only during the first War of Independence with England (1296-1329) were the castle residents subjected to repeated siege. The only other recorded occasion the castle was besieged came in 1650, after it had been abandoned as a lordly residence. For most of its life, Dirleton was a stately country huse surrounded by spacious grounds. And that is what it has become famous for in the course of the past 400 years - an impressive medieval ruin embraced by enchanting gardens.
The Great Hall was undoubtedly the most impressive structure ever built in the castle. It once had a high timber roof and, at the kitchen end, a minstrel's gallery over a timber screen dividing the hall from the service passage. In the surviving wall of that passage is an ornate stone buffet, where the family's best plate was displayed. The passage seems not to be the right location for it, and it is possible that it once grace the great hall but was later moved to its present position.
Beneath the chapel is one of Dirleton's chief highlights - the prison and pit. The prison was reserved for freemen. At the top of the steep stone stair leading down into it is the privy, and there is a fireplace in the prison itself. A recess beside the fireplace contains a trapdoor giving access to a miserable pit below, where the un free in society were incarcerated. This dark hole measures little over 3m (10ft) square, with no light and scarcely any ventilation. It does, however, have a privy. (Please note that, for safety reasons, the pit is not normally accessible for visitors.)

This location has been no stranger to mysterious stories, along with local myths and legends.
The Devil himself is said to have turned up on the grassy green beneath the castle wall in June 1649, allegedly taking the physical form of 'a large black shadow man'.

Dirleton Castle
Dirleton Castle And GardenFor 400 years, Dirleton Castle stood as a magnificent fortress--residence for three successive noble families. It was badly damaged during Cromwell's siege of 1650, but its fortunes revived in the 1660s when the Nisbet family built a new mansion close to the picturesque ruins.
They also resuscitated the splendid gardens, which now include the world's longest herbaceous border.

Dirleton Castle part:2 ????????ส่องปราสาท ไดร์แรกตัน ร้างตอนจบ
Hi everyone welcome back to part:2 thank you very much for reading and here is some brief information about the castle and also the link below:
Dirleton castle built almost 800 years ago, was designed for comfortable living space as well as for defence. The three noble families who lived in it adapted their home in line with changing need. it was the seat of three noble families - THE DE VAUXS, THE HALIBURTONS AND THE RUTHVENS - Who in turn controlled the fertile area around Gullane and Dirleton. The downfall of the Ruthvens, after years of political manoeuvring against King James VI, led to the castle being abandoned as a residence in 1600 also 6 suspected witches were imprisoned in the castle.
Dirleton castle itself was a well-appointed home surrounded by spacious grounds, castle life was generally peaceful..But during the first War of Independence with England in 1296 to 1329, the residents endured numerous sieges, siege again and again centuries later, the attack came in 9 November 1650 by Oliver Cromwell's, soldiers came when a garrison was stationed in the castle, but at the end the castle was no longer use as a residence too much damaged! castle felt in ruins. The new owner who bough the castle called Nisbets, redesigned the surrounding as part of the landscape of their new mansion at Archerfield. Dirleton Castle
Dirleton Castle is a medieval fortress in the village of Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland. It lies around 2 miles (3.2 km) west of North Berwick, and around 19 miles (31 km) east of Edinburgh. The oldest parts of the castle date to the 13th century, and it was abandoned by the end of the 17th century.
Dirleton Castle stands on a rocky outcrop, at the heart of the rich agricultural lands of the barony of Dirleton, and guards the coastal approach to Edinburgh from England, via the port of North Berwick. The ruins comprise a 13th-century keep, and a 16th-century house which the Ruthvens built adjacent. Only the basement levels survive of the 14th- and 15th-century additions built by the Haliburtons, although these comprised a large hall and tower house along the east range. Other buildings within the courtyard have also been demolished. Surrounding the castle are gardens, which may have been first laid out in the 16th century, although the present planting is largely of the 20th century. The garden walls enclose a 16th-century doocot, or pigeon house.

See Innerwick castle from the air????????????????♀️สวัสดีค่าเอาวิวสวยๆของปราสาทอิเนอวิทมาฝาก
Standing on a rocky crag above the Thornton Burn, little remains of Innerwick Castle, a 15th-century tower and courtyard, except vaults, ruined walls and a rock-cut ditch. This was once a large and strong castle, but it is much reduced..
The present ruin dates from the 1400’s and 1500’s and was a Keep with an outer courtyard wall, with gradual infill of additional buildings as time went on. The original castle site though dates back to the 1300’s when it was built by the Stewarts. In 1398, the castle then passed to the Hamilton family, ancestors of the Earls of Haddington.
In 1403 Innerwick was besieged by the English knight ‘Hotspur’ Percy and Archibald ‘Black’ Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas, a Scot held captive since the defeat of the Scots army at the battle of Homildon Hill, near Wooler, in 1402. However, the siege of Innerwick and its near neighbour Cocklaws Tower, a Glastone house, proved to be a mock affair and a smoke screen, for when the Duke of Albany arrived with a large Scots army to save Innerwick, Percy and Douglas had already headed south-west to contact Douglas vassals and march on Shrewsbury. Percy and his men were now in league with Owen of Glendower in open revolt against King Henry IV of England. But at the battle of Shrewsbury Percy was killed, Douglas retaken captive and the rebels defeated.
In 1547 Innerwick was attacked by the English during the wars of the “Rough Wooing”. This was where the English insisted by force that the child Mary Queen of Scots be married to the English Prince Edward. One English force attacked Thornton Castle, a Home stronghold, directly across the ravine from Innerwick. A separate English unit of Hakbutters (riflemen) besieged Innerwick itself. The Master of Hamilton and eight other gentlemen barricaded the doors and defended from the battlements. Part of the castle was set ablaze and the hakbutters entered by storm, killing eight of the defenders on the spot; the ninth jumped from the castle battlements falling some 60 to 70ft into the ravine and river below. The English commander conducting the siege of Innerwick was so impressed by this feat of daring that he called for the man’s life to be spared. However, as the Scot scrambled along the river bed he was shot dead by the other English force attacking Thornton Castle. Following this Thornton Castle was demolished and Innerwick dismantled.
The castle of Innerwick can’t have been completely destroyed as it was being used by Scots horsemen, in 1650, as a base to attack Cromwell’s supply lines, in conjunction with the raids made by the ‘desperado gallants’ of Tantallon Castle and the ‘Moss troopers’ of Dirleton Castle. It appears though that Innerwick was ‘quitted’ by the Scots as only Dirleton and Tantallon are recorded as being bombarded and stormed in letters to Cromwell.
The occupation of the Lothians by Cromwell, and his systematic destruction of castles therein, proved that the days of mighty stone castles was over. Modern cannon and mortar pieces could fell any monument great or small. For this reason from 1650 onwards castles were no longer repaired or built as the expense made it a futile exercise. Innerwick like so many other castles fell the fate of being viewed as the local quarry for walls and cottages locally.
