KOBE EARTHQUAKE MEMORIAL MUSEUM | 阪神淡路大地震纪念馆 | 2017
As a giant candle lit up in ruin, The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, called Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museumas short name, was born to commemorate more than 6000 souls lost in the worst earthquake in Japan disaster fighting history. The nightmare rushed in Kobe on 5:46 am of January 17th 1995, ripping the city heart by the intensity of 7.3 richter, plunging the area in a devastated collapse. All the important constructions, large structures and the basic composition of harbor area were destroyed, followed by the tumble of nearly one kilometers of main arterial system.
Seven years later in 2002, Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museum was established following the purpose of handing down the experience of the earthquake to younger generations of Hyogo prefectural government. Over years, the museum seems to well carry out the mission of building disaster management culture and reinforcing local capacities in reducing disaster risk, becoming a global center for research of disaster risk management. In the close relationship with many relative organizations around the world, the museum is a key center of information on disaster risk management, providing expertise and information regarding action, aid, volunteer workers organizing and other issues organizing.
Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museum has an amazing architecture with double layer glass wall. As a museum of earthquake, it was designed to withstand the most devastating earthquake imaginable. Through the glass layer, visitors will be led into a large atrium to watch a 3D film reappearing the disaster in about just 7 minutes with simulated sound and effect like you are truly going through this horror. In next space, feeling turns to watching, as ruin of the earthquake are reconstructed to create a lively scene of devastated streets. You will also know the way Kobe raised the city up by recovery and reconstruction through documentary. The whole picture is drawn lively and truly making you numbed with scared and pitiful. The upstairs are exhibition space of life saving equipment and supplies donated by foreign governments. The short tour inside Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museum is not only the tour of memory but also the way to express sympathy, compassion as well as admiration to Japanese pain and courage.
EXPLORING KOBE | Kobe, Hyogo
I wrapped up my Kansai trip with a couple days in Kobe.
We started out in Kitano Ijinkan - an area with historical foreign houses. We went into the Weathercock House, the Dutch House, and the Starbucks. We took the ropeway up to Nunobiki Herb Garden. It was pretty big with different themed gardens. It's also a great place to take photos over the city. We finished off day 1 at Harborland and Chinatown.
Day 2 was all about visiting the Kobe Earthquake Museum (technically named The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution). It's a great place to learn about what happened in 1995 and how the city built itself back up.
Much love and happy travels

Mr. Toshizo Ido, Governor of Hyogo Prefecture as a Making Cities Resilient Champion
Date: March 9th 2012 11:20 -
Venue: Headquarters Office of Disaster Management Center, Hyogo Prefectural Government
About the Venue: The Disaster Management Center was constructed after the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake for the purpose to respond promptly and accurately to any disaster occurrence from the initial phase of emergency response as the headquarters of disaster management. It functions as the 24-hour disaster responsive and monitoring base equipped with the Phoenix Disaster Prevention and Preparedness System, a comprehensive disaster risk reduction (DRR) information system. The center was established building on the lessons learned from the 1995 earthquake in which the government office building itself was damaged by the intensive quake and became out of use for the initial response.)
