Discover Budapest | A long week-end in Hungary's Capital | 2019 Travels
I’ve definitely underestimated Budapest! Hungary’s capital is one of Europe’s most precious jewels.
✔ Day 1: My friend and I arrived at the airport in the afternoon. I would recommend to anyone buying a transportation pass upon arrival. Public transportations in Budapest are very convenient, frequent, and they have explanations in English. Moreover, you can choose between different pass options to best fit your stay. We took a 72hours pass and paid less than 15 euros. For more information, do not hesitate to visit the following website:
The restaurant concepts in Budapest are various and original. The prices are very affordable and the quality of food is excellent. Each restaurant/bar has a different concept and as hospitality students, we were more than excited to make the most out of this experience. This particular evening, we went eating at the Mazel Tov and paid around 25 euros for the two of us.
After dinner, we wandered around in the night, got dragged into Gozsdu Udvar, and eventually ended our spontaneous walk at the Danube where the beauty of Budapest caught up on us and left us speechless. The views in the night over Buda and the Chain Bridge are just magical.
✔ Day 2: We started the day by heading to Margaret Island, which must be beautiful throughout the year despite in winter. After we took a bus which brought us to the City Park, where the Széchenyi baths, Vajdahunyad Castle, Heroes’ square, and the Budapest zoo are located. We ate lunch at a lovely restaurant on the lake, “Robinson Etterem”. The admission into the zoo for an adult is around 10 euros. It is definitely worth it if you have the time to do it.
Here is a tip where to find the best Chimney Cakes (kürtös kalács) in Budapest. Head to the city center and grab your Chimney Cake at “Molnár's kürtőskalács”. These Chimney Cakes will sweeten your day.
✔ Day 3: On that particular day, we had planned to visit most of the attractions on the “Buda” side of the Danube. We took a bus in front of the Chain Bridge to go up to the Fishermen’s Bastion/Matthias Church (the bus continues to Buda Castle). From the mystical Fishermen’s Bastion you have an incredible view on “Pest” and especially on the imposing Parliament. We then walked to Buda Castle (10 minutes’ walk), an imposing castle where you can find several museums (Hungarian National Gallery or Budapest History Museum). A funicular would bring you up to the castle from the Chain Bridge. We decided to go by public transportation as the queue can be quite consequent and the pass cannot be used on the funicular. In the afternoon, we went to the Parliament .
Later on, we decided to hike up the Géllert Hill to reach the citadel. It was quite an adventure! It is not a hard hike but you still have to make it up there. Once you reach the Citadel, you will be welcomed by the Liberty Statue and a stunning view over the majority of Budapest’s attractions.
✔ Day 4: On that rainy day, we visited Budapest’s Great Synagogue, where we faced on one side the pride of the Jewish community as well as their sad history. We went to the “Shoes on the Danube” memorial. On the way back to our hotel, we stopped at the St. Stephen’s Basilica and wondered for a while if the relic of the holy right hand of St. Stephen was real or not. In the evening, we went out to explore Szimpla Kert, the first Ruin Bar ever created in Budapest. If you come here, you must definitely add a Ruin Bar to your bucket list.
Vicky Barcelona on Gozsdu Udvar is a great tapas restaurant that I would recommend!
✔ Day 5: Before leaving to the Airport, we wandered around the Central Market Hall (closed on Sundays) and explored some shops on Váci utca.
Thank you Budapest for being so good to us and I am especially grateful to my friend who dragged me there :)

Streets of Budapest, Hungary
You may be wondering what I did in my free time? I took advantage of my AirBnB downtown location, exploring the surrounding areas on foot. Let me show you a few interesting places, buildings and statues.
At the intersection of Dohány Street and Erzsébet Boulevard, on a small square, you will discover the bronze fountain called Faun kut. It represents a Faun sitting in a tree, playing a lyre. Created in 1986, this stunning work by the Hungarian sculptor Laszlo Marton is a beautiful achievement.
In the summer of 2014, a bronze statue suddenly appeared in Sabadsag Square in Budapest, a few blocks from the parliament. The statue featured an angel, a male figure with his tunic open to his breast, menaced by an eagle whose talons clutched a bar just overhead. The angel represents Hungary, and the eagle the Nazis, who had entered Budapest on March 19, 1944. The statue had been commissioned and installed on the orders of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Szabadság or Liberty Square is a mix of business and residential buildings. Some buildings on the square are designed in the Art Nouveau style. Ignác Alpár designed two of the buildings. The square houses a monument to the Soviet liberation of Hungary in World War II from Nazi German occupation. It was designed by Károly Antal.
The New York Palace Budapest, a luxury hotel, is a part of the Dedica Anthology .The building was constructed in 1894 by the New York Life Insurance Company as a local head office. It was designed by architect Alajos Hauszmann. The statues and other ornaments on the facade of the building, as well as the café's 16 imposing devilish fauns, are the works of Károly Senyei. The building opened on October 23, 1894. The famous New York Café has been a longtime center for Hungarian literature and poetry.
Upon arriving, very hungry for breakfast at the cafe, we discovered that reservations well in advanced were required.
A whole district that includes, a bit of the Grand Boulevard, a major bridge, Budapest’s main square and now a new sculpture, bare the name and honor the memory of the great monarch, Empress Elizabeth.
After becoming the wife of Emperor Franz Josef, at the age of only 16. Elizabeth became a formal member of the Habsburg royal family and Queen of Hungary.
Over time, Elizabeth developed a deep affection for this country and its culture, visiting frequently as she preferred its more relaxed atmosphere to Vienna’s. She even learned the language. In return, Hungarians lovingly nicknamed her, Sisi. Her persona is forever surrounded by myth and legend. Her death in 1898 was a violent assassination. Sisi is still greatly beloved by the country that continues to honor her memory.
The Liszt Franz Academy of Music, often abbreviated as Zeneakadémia is a music university and a concert hall in Budapest, Hungary, founded on November 14, 1875. It is home to the Liszt Collection, which features several valuable books and manuscripts donated by Franz Liszt upon his death, and the AVISO studio, a collaboration between the governments of Hungary and Japan to provide sound recording equipment and training for students. The façade is dominated by a statue of Liszt, sculpted by Alajos Stróbl. The inside of the building is decorated with frescoes, Zsolnay ceramics, and several statues: among them that of Béla Bartók and Frédéric Chopin. The building is enhanced by the stained glass windows, made by Miksa Róth.
Budapest is possibly one of the most underrated European capital cities to visit. To learn more about Budapest I would love to spend more time and explore more places of this glorious city. Perhaps, that might be some other story..

Discover Budapest: A Quick Look
I just wanted to put together these snippets to remind me of a great trip with some friends and a great 30th birthday (celebrated in 2017).
I have had the pleasure and privilege of traveling throughout Europe on different occasions and I must say that Budapest is one of those cities where I just felt absolutely safe in. The only other time I had ever felt that was when I visited and enjoyed Florence.
This video is not meant to be a travel guide blog, but instead, just provide you a quick overview of the Buda and Pest. The wine section at the end of the video was from a wine tour we found via Viator which was absolutely incredible - it took us out 1 hour from the city and we got to explore the countryside - highly recommended.
Where we went:
▶︎ Fisherman's Bastion
▶︎ Matthias Church
▶︎ Heroes' Square
▶︎ Széchenyi Chain Bridge
▶︎ Gellért Hill
▶︎ Shoes on the Danube Bank
▶︎ and so much more
May you enjoy your travels wherever you may go, and make sure to capture your moments so you always have something look back on.
