Discover Tallinn (Estonia, Tallinn)
Welcome to Tallinn!
Discover Tallinn, Estonia
A visit to Tallinn, the oldest capital city in Northern Europe, is a trip back in time. The cobblestone streets, UNESCO-listed medieval walls, and stunning church spires give it an Old World charm you’ll love exploring. But there are all the modern amenities here too, and today Tallinn is a truly unique destination with the best of the old and the new. You’ll also see influences of both the east and west in the architecture and cuisine, as Estonia is a short ferry ride from Helsinki. The restaurants, quaint cafes and chic boutiques are places you’ll love to linger, while the long coastline is ideal for strolling.
There are so many different ways to see the city, because Tallinn is so rich in history. See how beer influenced local history, or explore the reminders of life under the Soviet regime. Take a walking tour of the beautiful Old Town, or a driving tour to see more of the city. There are distinct neighborhoods here and each one feels distinct. Tallinn is very tech-savvy, so the business district is always modern and bustling. The bohemian Kalamaja neighborhood is a great place to have a drink or a bite to eat. The picturesque Lahemaa National Park is one of the best day trips from Tallinn, and you’ll have fun wandering through nature here before returning to the city to find more of its charms.
A few days in Tallinn is the perfect start to a tour of all three Baltic capitals. Check out our suggested itinerary for Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius here:

The REAL Highlights Of Estonia (DON'T MISS This Near Tallinn!)
Do you know anything about Estonia, except that its capital is Tallinn? We were invited by Rein, a great Estonian guy (who picked us up while we were hitchhiking) who kindly offered to show us around the 'real Estonia' around Paldiski, a beautiful city on Estonia's Baltic coast.
The rugged coastline, steep cliffs, beautiful forests and the highest lighthouse in all of Estonia make Paldiski's surroundings a place where you can experience the truly local life of Estonia. But, the COOLEST experience we had was to visit Rummu Karjaar, which is a flooded mine / previous underwater soviet prison camp. The camp and mine flooded so quickly, the buildings and the machines are still in the water.
We also tried THE hangover cure famous amongst Estonians: Solyanka, a thick and delicious meat soup.
Paldiski is a Baltic Sea port town in the north west of Estonia and has about 4000 inhabitants. Before 1994, this little port town was a busy Soviet military base, home to nuclear rockets and submarines. Nobody was allowed to access it before 1994, so if you're looking for something 'different', this is your place for a day trip.
If you are going to visit Tallinn, you should really visit a few other places in Estonia as well so you can discover typical life outside the capital. You can take the direct bus from Tallinn to Paldiski, which takes about 1 hour and it costs 3 euro.
Thanks a lot to Rein, who picked us up while we were hitchhiking somewhere in Estonia. He kindly offered to show two strangers around in his hometown. Getting to hang out with you was a highlight of our trip, Rein!

10 Things NOT to Do in Estonia
Get more Tips here!
From its historical museums to the medieval castles in the capital of Tallinn, you will find a lot of reasons why you should plan a visit, but here are 10 things to keep in mind when traveling to this Northern Europe country.
1. Don’t Get Easily Offended
Estonians have a great sense of humor, but they tend to be more dry and sar-castic when it comes to cracking a joke. If you find yourself the target of an off-hand pun, take it as a compliment and learn to laugh at yourself.
2. Don’t Talk About History
In the 1940s, Estonian Jews were massacred by German police units and Es-tonian auxiliaries by the thousands. These events may have occurred decades ago, but the memories of the death and destruction are still fresh in their minds.
3. Don’t Forget to Wear Reflectors
If you plan on renting a bike and going for a ride after dark, small reflectors are required during the winter months. If you’re caught riding around without them, you’ll be subjected to a fine ranging from $50 to $500 USD.
4. Don’t Ignore Drink Prices
When ordering a drink in a bar, play close attention to the drink prices. Many people have noticed that some bartenders mark up the price of liquor for for-eign tourists.
5. Don’t Keep Your Shoes On
If you happen to meet a kind Estonian who invites you to their home, respect is required at all times. They also expect you to take off your shoes when you step inside, so make sure you’re wearing some presentable socks!
6. Don’t Expect Friendliness Right Away
Many people define Estonians as cold and standoffish. You’ll probably feel a bit of tension, but it won’t last long. When they become more comfortable with you, their demeanor and communication will lighten up drastically.
7. Don’t Travel Without Insect Repellent
Tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme-disease is widespread, especially in the parks in Tallinn. Bites from ticks and other insects are more common in forest-ed areas, so be sure to protect yourself before venturing out into nature.
8. Don’t Expect Help When Traveling With Kids
Estonia is definitely a children-friendly destination, but public transportation isn’t equipped to provide assistance for those with strollers, and a lot of the streets in Old Town are cobbled roads, making it difficult to push strollers with ease.
9. Don’t Use Your Cell Phone While Driving
Talking on your cell phone while driving is prohibited, but you can use a hands-free system, of course. Seat belts are always required, and your head-lights must be turned on at all times – whether it’s daytime or nighttime.
10. Don’t Ask Them to Speak Russian
Many people assume Estonians speak Russian since the neighboring country is close by. But they have their own language, Estonian, which they’re really proud of. However, many Estonians prefer to speak English.
Where do you want to know what not to do in next?
