The Island Where People Live Longer Than Others
How to live longer? Tales about “the fountain of youth” have been passed down through centuries, yet we still haven’t managed to find it…or have we? The people of one small Greek island would have you believe so!
Located in the Aegean Sea, Greece’s 98-square-mile island Ikaria is home to approximately 8,500 people. Many believe these people hold the secret to eternal youth. Well, maybe not “eternal” but 1/3 of Ikaria’s population does live to be in their 90s and even older, and the majority of them are in good health by the time they get there. So, what is their secret?

SUMMARY:
- They love growing fruits and veggies for delicious dishes they make from scratch. Their diet consists of beans, herbs, nuts, and, of course, seasonal fruits and vegetables. These non-processed foods packed with all kinds of antioxidants seem to have an undeniable impact on their health.
- The Ikarian people are very community-oriented, and being there for one’s neighbor no matter what seems to be their life motto. This way of thinking developed over time because of a pretty rough history not short of invasions by other nations.
- Ikaria is full of rocky roads, which makes even short walks a little more strenuous. Ikarians do a ton of walking around. And since they’re so communal, a lot of this walking is to and from each other’s homes for visits.
- Unlike most other people in the world, they don’t base their daily activities around what time it is. They also don’t make plans set in stone, they like to leave things open.
- Thanks to the absence of clocks, the people of Ikaria listen to their bodies more. So, if they feel like taking a nap in the middle of the afternoon, they take one!
- In Ikaria, nearly 40% of people don’t have jobs. While this sounds stressful, it’s actually part of what makes these people worry-free.
- Something that experts studying Ikaria and other Blue Zones have noticed is that these people are very close with their families. The elders play a pretty significant role in their daily lives - there aren’t any old folks homes or anything like that.
- Ikarian people love dancing and celebrating with each other and being their true authentic selves. Life is way more fun this way!
- Instead of western medicinal practices, the people of Ikaria practice more natural medicine and stick to non-processed materials to heal the body.

Can NLP, hypnotherapy and meditation improve the health of the body and mind?
In this video I am going to talk about some of the key elements in living to a ripe old age. Stay with me because this is real powerful stuff. I an going to start with two anecdotes.
Nepal and Coconut Milk
Back in the 1980’s an American man with AIDS was given a couple of months to live so he dealt with his affairs and moved to Nepal. Within a few weeks his blood profile was normal and regained his former health. People credited his recovery to the consumption of fresh coconut juice but there is more to it than that. I will tell you what that is in a moment.
The Island Where People Forget to Die
The second story I like to relate is that of American man dying from cancer who is given a few months to live – so he sells up and moves back to his parents home on the Island of Ikaria. You might already know this story. There is an article on the New York Times website titled: “The Island Where People Forget to Die”
In 1976 at the age of 60 years Stamatis Moraitis was diagnosed with cancer. He was given nine months to live so he moves back to be with his parents on a two acre vineyard on the Greek Island of Ikaria. At first he spends most of his time in bed but then he ventures outside to do some work in the vegetable garden. Then he starts socialising with family and friends over a glass of wine at home and at the local tavern. He reconnects with his faith and goes to Church on Sundays. A few years later he builds on a couple of bedrooms so that so that his children can come and stay. He also works in the vineyard until it produces 400 gallons of wine a year. Thirty years later he decides to go back to the States to say hello to his Doctors but they had all died.
The Longevity Archetype
These two stories are archetypal – someone is dying of a serious illness. They accept the fact that they are going to die and so put their affairs in order. This means they have to make a lot of decisions. If you have ever had to do a serious downsize you would know that you have to look at each item that you own – reflect upon its meaning – and then make a decision as to whether to keep it or not. You may give the item to a friend or family member. You may sell it, donate it to a charity or take it to the local tip. But either way there is a process of reflecting upon the past – evaluating your current position – and considering your future destination. Implicit in this process is a review of your values and the conditions that need to be met in order to fulfil your most important values.
So these survivors downsize. Typically but not always they move away from the city into a semi rural, rustic, village type environment. They spend their days centred around a family home life doing simple activities such as growing fruit and vegetables; taking care of farm animals; preparing food; building a simple house and home for family; socialising with friends; focussing on spirituality; working quite long hours at moderate physical work but most importantly working at their own pace and not being forced to work a nine am to five pm – five day work week. And lo and behold they regain their health and live to a ripe old age.

#ShareUbuntu Circle Instructions
Learn how to facilitate a #ShareUbuntu Circle. Ubuntu means I am because we are. Here are instructions to support you in facilitating a short activity that inspires people to turn towards each other and experience a simple moment of playful togetherness.
Ubuntu (pronounced ooo-boon-too) is a way of being that comes from the cultures of southern Africa and translates to I am because we are. Ubuntu is the spirit of togetherness.
Turn towards one another,
Not away from each other.
Ubuntu is I am because we are.
The #ShareUbuntu global movement and social experiment launched on Nelson Mandela's Birthday, July 18, 2016 as a gift to honor his legacy of leadership in moving beyond separation and isolation to inspire people to turn towards one another to share moments of togetherness.
The goals of the #ShareUbuntu project are to:
1) Spark awareness and use of the word Ubuntu in language to encourage more discussions of our roles and ways of being in supporting humanity together. Currently, there is not a direct translation into English and many languages in the world. Words shape our reality. In order for the concept of “coming together as community” to hold value in the design of our lives it helps to have a word to describe it... Ubuntu.
2) Inspire people to #ShareUbuntu by turning towards each other to create simple moments of togetherness through acts of kindness and by facilitating #ShareUbuntu Circles in communities and organizations as a way to build trust and empathy (see photos on the @ShareUbuntu social media pages) Learn more about the power of play to connect and build communities: playforpeace.org
3) Give back! Join us in putting gratitude into action full circle by donating to The Gratitude Project, an organization in South Africa supporting Child-Run Households (youth who have lost both parents and are raising families) in the Nkomazi region of South Africa. #NoChildIsAlone #ShareUbuntu GratitudeInAction.org
The #ShareUbuntu global movement is reminder that we go further together. There is power when we come together and find common ground in our humanity even in the face of conflict, pain and uncertainty.
Turn towards one another, not away from each other. Ubuntu is I am because we are.
Thank you for all the ways you live and ShareUbuntu!

5. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Panos Kammenos, Merchant Marine Minister, reacting to recent piracy of Greek-owned ship in the Gulf of Aden:
I don't want, I can't at this moment give you certain facts. As you understand, on the one side is the family of the sailors who have access to information, but of course we inform them as much as possible, but at the same time, it is information that also is being conveyed to the other side. Nevertheless, there is a plan to confront this incident as well. We also had other incidents during the day. Some of them were dealt with successfully, and I deem that we will have positive developments in these recent events.

7. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Panos Kammenos, deputy Merchant Marine Minister:
I wouldn't want to go into details at this time and publicly state things that are the object of an international cooperation and that constitute confidential military information. But our decision is a given: to deal with piracy with any means and quickly for economic reasons, but foremost for the protection of human life, for the protection of free movement at sea.

10. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Panos Kammenos, deputy Merchant Marine Minister:
The pirates are becoming much better organised, the radius of their activity widens, and the means they use are also improving as their methods change. We are no longer talking about peaceful, if you would, hijacking attempts, but about harsh violence that is being implemented in an area of international, at an international passage of cargo.

STORYLINE:
Greece's deputy Merchant Marine Minister gave his reaction on Wednesday to the hijacking of the Greek-managed bulk carrier MV Irene E.M., which was attacked before dawn Tuesday, with at least 21 crew on board.
Panos Kammenos declined to give details but said there is a plan to confront this incident.
He said the decision had been taken to deal with piracy by any means but the protection of human life had to remain paramount.
He said pirates had become had become better organised and their methods had changed to incorporate harsh violence.
In March pirates hijacked the Greek-owned cargo ship Titan with 24 crewmen.
And in February pirates seized a Greek-owned cargo ship, the Saldanha, with a 22-member crew, off Somalia's coast
Pirates can extort one (m) million dollars or more for each ship and crew seized off the Horn of Africa - and Kenya estimates they raked in 150 (m) million dollars last year.
At least 16 ships and more than 300 crew members are believed to be currently held by pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to the International Maritime Bureau, NATO and others
Pirates say they are fighting illegal fishing and dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters, but now operate hundreds of miles from there in a sprawling 1.1 (m) million square-mile danger zone.
A flotilla of warships from nearly a dozen countries has patrolled the Gulf of Aden and nearby Indian Ocean waters for months. They have halted many attacks but say the area is so vast they can't stop all hijackings.

8 - Irene O’Shea
Not only did Irene O’Shea become the oldest person ever to skydive in Southern Australia, but she did it for a good cause. When Irene celebrated her 100th birthday by jumping from an airplane that was more than 12,000 feet up in the air, she did it in order to raise money for Lou Gehrig’s disease, a disease that took her daughter’s life in 2008.
O’Shea took the historic plunge in May of 2016, about eight years after losing her daughter to the awful disease. O’Shea said that her daughter had suffered badly and if it hadn't been for other people's donations she wouldn't have had it so easy, so it was only fair that she put in the work to help out other people.
As a grandmother of five and great grandmother of 11, Irene seemed to have a knack for adventure all throughout her life. She’s traveled all over the world and has even been up in a glider a few times. So while she may have felt in place as she jumped out of a moving airplane, it’s still pretty impressive for someone who’s 100 years old. Most of us would be lucky to even be alive at that point. This lady’s jumping out of freaking airplanes!
7 - Peggy McAlpine
When she was a whopping 104 years old, Peggy McAlpine became the world’s oldest paraglider, which was actually keeping with her tradition of doing really cool things for her birthdays. For example when she turned 80, she celebrated by going bungee jumping. She later went for a ride on a Harley Davidson to celebrate her 100th birthday. So yeah, I’d say Peggy is an adrenaline junkie.
Born in 1907 in Scotland, Peggy professed to loving heights from an early age. By the 1920’s she was already flying in airplanes as part of humanity’s early attempts at human flight. She later married into the wealthy McAlpine family, and outlived her husband Thomas by more than 30 years.
She first made her way into the Guinness Book of World Records back in 2007 when she went paragliding at 100 years old. However, someone actually broke her record. Most people would have simply tipped their cap and conceded the record, but not Peggy.
But by her 104th birthday, she was confined to a wheelchair, but apparently she wasn’t gonna let just anyone break her record. This determined lady managed to once again go paragliding at the age of 104…..a world record that’s still held up. Like Peggy, her record has stood the test of time. The whole thing was even captured on video and naturally, it’s been uploaded onto YouTube.
Peggy passed away in 2013 at the age of 106. Those who knew her best described her as having lived a very colorful and full life. At the time of her death, she was also the oldest member of the Royal British Legion.
6 - Ruth Flowers
It’s never too late to give up on dreams. Perhaps no one knows that better than Ruth Flowers, who at 79 years old, played her first DJ set back in 2009. Performing in front of a crowd of 3,000 people at Anaheim’s Electro festival, Mamy Rocks, as she’s become known, basically rocked out.
Her young fans showed plenty of respect for their elder as she rocked out. They threw roses for her and cheered her on loudly when she was laying down some beats.
Flowers began her unique journey in 2005 when she went to a nightclub for her grandson’s birthday. Going to a club is the last place I’d bring my grandmother, but it seemed to have worked out in this case! Flowers was apparently amazed and delighted to see so many people having a fun time. She decided that she wanted to help arrange events where kids could get together and have a great time, and hey, being a DJ definitely helps to get things going.
In just a few short years, she began to book gigs all over the world, including in Europe and the US. In fact, she made her entrance into the world of DJing when she performed at the Cannes Film Festival. From there, she became the oldest and definitely the hippest DJ for her age in the world.

Camping is an outdoor activity involving overnight stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or a caravan.Generally participants leave developed areas to spend time outdoors in nature in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment. Camping can be enjoyed through all four seasons.
Modern campers frequent natural parks, beaches, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting, which use it to teach both self-reliance and teamwork.
All beaches, seas, mountains, forests, rivers, of this world belong to all of us the mankind. The goal is to teach each other the Love, the Respect and Protection of Nature. For freely travelling with our favorite people, our best friends and our lovers, protecting and cleaning the forests and beaches, enjoying life sometimes without clothing…
GUIDE for free and responsible Camping:
How do we coexist harmoniously with other campers, local residents and nature itself? It is important for campers to learn living together by following, at least, some common rules and habits: We park our cars & bikes away from the beach and we do not obstruct the access to public. We use bags for rubbish, including tissues as animals dig them out. We gather all our rubbish and any extra we find. Wear a plastic bag in your hand in order to make the process less uncomfortable. Determine where the “toilet” is and dig holes at least 30 cm each time or cover them with sand or soil. Instead of toilet paper we use water from the sea in a plastic bottle. We avoid the use of any shampoo and soap, in the water because they pollute the sea, lake or river. We are ready to understand the specific circumstances of the place where we are and to protect it with our presence. We respect the flora and fauna of the region according to the natural conditions. For example, in areas where the sea turtles lay their eggs, the fire can disorient them and their new born, or in areas of dense vegetation fire is very dangerous and forbidden. We have the tent several meters from the waves so we do not obstruct the other campers but mainly not to disturb crabs, turtles, birds. The insects are the residents of the area, we are the guests. We avoid insects with natural repellents, and by keeping the tent zipped closed all day. We do not consider the spot we are staying in as our property, we do not create conditions for permanent settlement. We offer, share, meet each other and create, to the desired extent, conditions of collective living with the other campers. Leave the forest or the beach as found, and if possible, much better.
