MEXICO : MANZANILLO EARTHQUAKE : SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS
Spanish/Nat
Rescue workers in Mexico are continuing to search for survivors buried in the rubble after Monday's powerful earthquake.
It's believed about 50 people died and hundreds of buildings were wrecked or damaged along a 400-kilometre (250-mile) stretch of coast covering the states of Jalisco and Colima.
In towns and villages, residents have started burying the dead and trying to clear up in the wake of the disaster.
It's the second tremor to hit Mexico this month.
Prayers for the dead in the town of Cihuatlan as rescuers take a break from the grim task of retrieving bodies.
Officials say around 50 people died when a powerful earthquake struck Mexico's west coast Monday, devastating some of the country's most popular tourist areas.
Rescue work is made more difficult by poor communications and damaged roads.
People are sleeping on porches, and outdoors because they're still frightened to go back inside their houses.
But the scores of people whose lives have been affected are now trying to get back to normal.
Hundreds of families have been forced to take refuge in a makeshift centre for those who've lost their homes in the quake.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Se vino todo abajo, no quedo nada nada, todo se cayo. Gracias a Dios que las bardas que nos rodearon no nos golpearon - todos los ninos estabamos asi amontonados en el patio y se vinieron las bardas asi.
Translation: Everything came crashing down, there was nothing left, it all came down. Thank God the slabs that surrounded us didn't hit us - all of us, the children, piled out onto the patio and then all the slabs came down.
SUPER CAPTION: Anita de la Cruz Mora - local resident.
Rescue crews continue their search for survivors - with the few resources available to them.
Above all, says the region's governor, the people must continue to be optimistic.
Translation: Hope is always the last thing you lose and we are hopeful that among those who are crushed under there, there may be some still alive, although you already heard what the head of the civil protection unit said - there are very few possibilities of finding anyone alive under there.
SUPER CAPTION: Carlos de la Madrid - Governor of Colima
Nevertheless, crews continue to use their picks and shovels to comb through the chunks of broken masonry.

Manzanillo Mexico - a place I call my second home. We shot this footage while there this winter. This is going out to all the friends and family there who supported our efforts and helped us connect with the local community and experience the magic.
Manzanillo is a Pacific Ocean port city and resort in the Mexican state of Colima. It's the site of 2 bays, Bahía de Manzanillo and Bahía de Santiago. The latter is known for beaches such as Playa La Audiencia, with calm surf for water sports. The waters off the coast have numerous coral reefs, shipwrecks and other dive sites. With a high concentration of marlin, the area is also known for deep-sea sportfishing.

MEXICO : MANZANILLO EARTHQUAKE UPDATE
Spanish/Nat
At least 54 people are now known to have been killed in Monday's earthquake on Mexico's Pacific coast. And there are fears that the figure could rise.
Rescue workers spent the day searching for victims of the tragedy, which flattened houses and hotels in the city of Manzanillo and nearby towns.
The quake also injured 90 people as it cracked bridges, split highways and cut power and phone services.
The 7.6-magnitude quake struck at 1537 GMT on Monday and was centred three miles (five kilometers) off the Pacific Coast, between Colima and Jalisco states.
The two states contain some of Mexico's most popular beach resorts.
Worst hit was Manzanillo, a resort 330 miles west of Mexico City. The seven-storey Costa Real Hotel was reduced to rubble. In two days, rescuers have pulled 19 bodies and 10 injured people from the ruins. The lack of electricity forced them to halt overnight, but
the search resumed at dawn Tuesday with police dogs sniffing for signs of life.
Red Cross workers and sailors based at a port nearby helped in the rescue operation. They used picks and shovels, undeterred by a strong aftershock.

(I was coming down the road when I saw everything start to shake and move. I stopped and then I saw that building collapse, as if they'd knocked it off its feet, as if they'd pulled out the ground floor and it came crashing down. There are eight or nine dead people lying over there. They say that there are another 70 people or so still in there, who were working at the time.)

SUPER CAPTION: Army spokesman
Local reports said at least 30 guests were registered at the hotel and 27 employees were working there.
It's unknown how many were in the building at the time of the quake.
This woman's husband and young daughter are still buried in the rubble.
SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish)
(Mi hija y mi esposo que no lo encuentran. La nina tiene seis anos, mi esposo 27 anos. Aqui viviamos - trabajaba mi esposo para el hotel.)
(My daughter and my husband - they can't find them. The girl is six-years-old, my husband is 27. We lived here, my husband worked in the hotel.)
SUPER CAPTION: Zaida Gomez
A state of emergency has been declared in Jalisco and President Ernesto Zedillo sent five cabinet members to assess damage and coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
The quake was the second powerful tremor to hit Mexico in a month.

San Luciano Wreck Dive in Manzanillo Mexico
San Luciano Shipwreck:
This wreck occurred during the 1959 Mexico Hurricane which was a devastating tropical cyclone that was one of the worst Pacific hurricanes to exist. It impacted the Pacific coast of Mexico in October 1959 and killed at least 1,000 people, a record that still stands. It also caused 280 million dollars in damage as it passed directly over the Mexican States of Colima and southern Jalisco due to high winds and flooding. It came ashore close to Manzanillo. This hurricane was a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and set several records, related to both impact and meteorological statistics.
The San Luciano Shipwreck Manzanillo Dive Site:
The San Luciano is 300 feet long and sits in only 25 feet of water just off shore. Shipwrecks always fascinate people so this is one of Manzanillo's most popular dive sites. This wreck has so many huge puffer fish it is impossible to describe. Both a huge quantity and a huge variety, I doubt you will ever see this many balloonfish again, anywhere. Hawksbill turtles have been sighted on this wreck as well as seahorses and octopus. There are huge schools of grunts that swim and swirl around the wreck. The wreck is open enough for penetration with a lot of rooms to explore. The ship was one of 9 that went down in the only category 5 storm Manzanillo has ever had.
