Discovering Namibia | Swakopmund to Etosha National Park | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids
Join in on the fun and discover Swakopmund and Etosha National Park in Namibia with us!
Swakopmund is not the country’s capital but it’s Namibia tourist and extreme sports centre. It’s the place to be if you are the adventurous type. The city has a huge German influence.
What we loved the most there was the contrast between the city itself and the fact that it was sitting just at the edge of the Namib desert which is the oldest desert in the world. Although this beach destination in the African desert filled with historic structures originally drew us in, we found the sand dunes nearby to be even more magnificent. They are legendary; they're vast, beautiful and a lot of fun to roll down. We had a blast sledding and snowboarding on them!
From Swakopmund we traveled north to discover Estosha Park which is the largest salt pan in Africa and as big as the country of Belgium! It's teeming with wildlife and a great place to explore.
Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!

Namibia on the road
They call it Africa for beginners because Namibia is very easy to go around and discover the country on your own. And so we did. This video is perfect to watch if you are considering to go to Namibia, as it covers the classic itinerary in the country.
Given the Xmas holiday period we booked car plus some accommodation from Europe. Despite we travelled at the beginning of the raining period (January), the weather was great (almost always sunny and warm). We did a classic itinerary given we had only 10 days to spend. With a couple of more days, we recommend to reach Opuwo to see the Himba people. With further 3/4 days, you can add the Namibian Kahalari and the south.
DAY 1
Arrival in Windhoek. Pick up of the car, first walk in the city. Dinner at Joe Beerhouse
DAY 2
From Windhoek to Sesriem. Ca 5 hours of beautiful driving getting the first experience with Namibian gravel roads. Most road in Namibia are gravel but are relatively large and well maintained. Afternoon in Sesriem spent visiting the canyon and climbing the Elim dune.
DAY 3
Wake up at 5.30am to enter the park as it opens (6.10am). Drive the 45km to get to the Dune 45 and first breathtaking climb of the dune. Then straight to Deadvlei and Sussusvlei until around 1pm. As it is summer (up to 45C), we spent the central hours of the day sleeping near the sleeping pool of the lodge. Then short tour and beer to watch the sunset from the savannah
DAY 4
Another early wake up and we are on the way to Swakopmund. First stop is at Solitaire, to taste the apple pie which is recommended in every guidebook. Then stop at the Tropic of Capricorn. The first part of the drive is beautiful with savanna landscape. After you cross the Kuiseb pass you enter a total new landscape as you are entering the Skeleton Coast. A couple of hours of drive in the desolation, and we reach first Walvis Bay, and then Swakopmund where we spend the afternoon exploring the German soul of this city.
DAY 5
The day was spend in an excursion. In the morning we went by boat in the Walvis bay, watching seals, birds, shipwrecks ... In the afternoon, we took the 4x4 excursion to Sandwitch Harbour, a secluded bay very difficult to reach unless you are an experienced off-road driver with the right car. The place is amazing and the top moment was the lunch on the beach, eating oysters, in a beautiful and unspoiled oasis completely untouched by civilisation
DAY 6
Another day on the road (6 hours with stops). From Swakop, we headed north along the Skeleton Coast stopping at the Leila shipwreck and Cape Cross, a colony of thousands of fur seals. From there we drove to the Damaraland which we reached in the early afternoon, on time for a visit to the Twyfelfontein archaeological site (rock engravings and paintings dated between 2,000 and 6,000 years ago). A stop to the Herero women along the roads is a good spot to get some nice souvenirs.
DAY 7
On the move again, direction Etosha. But before we spent an hour at the petrified forest and getting some fuel and lunch in Khorixas. From there, the road to Etosha is paved again. We arrived in Etosha at the Okaukejo Lodge. A couple of hour to rest and we are in the bush again with the car spotting the first animals (giraffe, zebra, impala)
DAY 8
Whole day spent in the car, slowly wandering around the Etosha park. Despite the raining season (the animals are spread in the bush and the vegetation is more dense) we spotted all the key animals with the exception of the felines (esp. the lion was missing).
DAY 9
Return to Windhoek. A nice long way, with a couple of nice and clean villages to stop by to refuel and buy some food and souvenirs. Evening passed enjoying a beer in the great outdoor garden at Joe Beerhouse.
DAY 10
Visit of Windhoek. A small city, not much to see but good for spending a few hours walking around. Flight in late afternoon.

Read below for full transcript:
Let Scenic take you on an amazing journey of discovery as you travel to many incredible places in Africa that will stay in your heart forever.
Whether you explore South Africa and the Garden Route or choose a comprehensive highlights tour of Africa; including South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia, you will be astounded by the rich diversity of this amazing continent.
Africa is known for its game parks and the incredible wildlife that inhabit these vast masses of land. Traveling in custom-built four-wheel-drive vehicles, you'll experience these magnificent surroundings for the best wildlife viewing in the world.
We are surrounded by a herd of elephants, they're just grazing here in the bushes, this is like a big beautiful buffet meal for them and what you’re seeing now, this is something that you could never do in a national park.
Get up close to the famed big five roaming freely in their natural habitat in Kruger, Thornybush, Chobe, Massai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Sweetwaters, Lake Nakuru, Etosha, Ngorongoro, and the Okavango Delta. You may even be lucky enough to see the wildebeest migrating across the rolling plains of the Massai Mara.
A holiday to Africa is about more than game parks. Africa's huge expanses invite you on a journey of discovery into tribal cultures and contrasting landscapes. You will come in contact with local villages, where you will experience the culture firsthand through the Scenic Enrich program; exclusive to Scenic.
These events and activities are designed to enhance your tour allowing you to live the destination rather than just travel through it.
In Amboseli learn about the traditional Maasai culture during your visit to a village in Lake Nakuru, you will visit an orphanage established by an Australian family striving to give disadvantaged children a better life.
South Africa's cultural experiences include a visit to the tribal homes of the fiercely independent Zulus, these and other unique interactions will increase your understanding and appreciation of the cultures & wildlife you encounter providing a new perspective on Africa.
During your journey you'll be surrounded by Africa's natural beauty. You will also discover cosmopolitan Cape Town, where you will take a cable car to the top of Table Mountain for outstanding views. Enjoy a day trip around the Cape Peninsula for views over the Cape of Good Hope and a close encounter with colonies of penguins.
You will also enjoy a guided tour along some of the world's most spectacular drives, Chapman's peak and the Garden and Panorama routes.
When you travel with Scenic, our exclusive Scenic Freechoice activities allow you to choose from a range of options at no extra cost.
Food tourism right around the world is absolutely booming and South Africa has risen to the challenge boots and al.l Now at the heart of it here are the wine lands and I promise you that not only sound great they taste even better.
Around Cape Town explore the beautiful Stellenbosch wine region, famous for its Dutch architecture or cruise to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was
Imprisoned. Our holidays feature a hand-picked collection of Scenic special stays, which are outstanding hotels and lodges and at each one a very special experience awaits.
Lion Sands River Lodge is a perfect example of just one of the Scenic special stays, included in our tours of Africa located in a private concession in iconic Kruger National Park ensuring you exclusive access to this section of the park the unrestricted game viewing throughout the reserve will create memories to last a lifetime.
Look I just had to show you this because if I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it. I’ve gone for a wander through the hotel grounds and look who's joined us, I don't know the behaviour of these animals outside of a zoo but they sure are pretty.
Now before you actually see the falls, you hear them, you feel them, this rumbling, churning water, the largest falling curtain of water in the world twice the size of Niagara.
For the ultimate luxury safari experience, take to the skies without ten-day East Africa by air experience where you will fly between luxury tented camps and safari lodges in East Africa.
In Botswana you can visit the water Wonderland of the Okavango Delta, staying in some of the most spectacular and secluded tented camps in all of Africa.
In Namibia you discover the red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, the beautiful and remote coastline of Swakopmund as well as the Magnificent Etosh National Park.
When most of us talk about journey's a lifetime an African safari is right up there.
I hope you’re ready to roar.

Namibia road trip day 11 driving from Sossusvlei to Solitaire to eat apple pie in the Namib desert
Solitaire in Namibia was once just a lonely farm fuel station in the middle of the Namib desert, a convenient place for the growing Namibia tourist market to fill up with petrol on their way to Sossuvlei and Sesriem canyon. But now Solitaire is so much more.
The apple pie at Solitaire is somewhat famous so make sure you call in if your are driving on the Solitaire road, probably on your way to Sossuvlei and the red sand dunes, maybe to camp at Sesriem.
In this video we will start at Sesriem camp, at the entrance to Sossusvlei by packing up camp and checking in after arriving late the night before after reception had closed. (For more about Sossusvlei you should check out my vlog Namibia Day 10 ).
After packing up our roof tent we head out on the road to Solitaire in search of lunch and in particular the famous apple pie (or apple crumble) at Moose's bakery in Solitaire.
Together we will discover something about Solitaire history and how Solitaire has grown to become such an iconic place to visit in Namibia, and also get an insight into the Damara language...if you have never heard one of the African click languages then you should watch this video just to hear it!
If you haven't already subscribed I would be delighted for you to do so and come and join me on the next stage of this Namibian adventure, or to get some more travel inspiration from the other destinations I have traveled to. I love to travel and I love to take you with me. Most of all I hope I inspire you to travel somewhere new yourself, or maybe revisit one of your favourite places.

Namibia part2: Leopard & Cheetah Safari in Okonjima Reserve / Africat
Day 2: In the morning we drove from Windhuk to Okonjima. At 3 pm we started with the Cheetah - tracking safari. We were lucky and could observe two of them feeding an antilope.
Next morning, day 3: We tried to discover a Leopard. After searching for 1-2 hours we hit one - very difficult even of the radio-tracking system.
Recommendation: As this is one of the unice places here in Namibia (and even of Africa) I highly recommend to stay for 2 full days, because there are a lot of activities offered.
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp (Namib Desert, Namibia)
Stylish safari camp on a private concession just outside Skeleton Coast National Park, close to the dry bed of the Hoanib River. Set wide apart, seven tented suites and one two-bedroom family unit feature sturdy canvas walls, large glass windows, wooden doors and electric lights (no A/C); each has a shaded outdoor deck and spacious bath. Sophisticated common areas with steeply pitched tented ceilings, including a bar, lounge and dining room (partially enclosed by glass), flow unimpeded into the desert landscape. Small seasonal lap pool. Diversions include game drives, day trips to desert oases, guided nature walks and excursions to the Skeleton Coast, a four-hour drive away by Land Cruiser.

Sonne und Wärme fand sie in Süd-Thailand, auf Madeira, den Seychellen und den Kanarischen Inseln.
