1,092ft USS Harry S Truman warship arriving in Portsmouth
The 1,092-foot U.S. vessel (left) arrived in thick fog on the Hampshire coast on Saturday morning as part of a lengthy North Atlantic voyage to 'foster co-operation' with Washington's NATO allies. Capable of carrying 90 aircraft on its flight deck (top right), the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier - named after America's 33rd president who led the country at the end of World War II - returned to sea late last month. The ship (seen inside, bottom right) is part of the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet which has a mission to 'advance security and stability in Europe and Africa' in co-operation with its allies. Britain's new naval giant HMS Queen Elizabeth (top left inset) is put through her paces on the opposite side of the ocean.

Ohio Valley Native American Earthwork Sites and New Discoveries through Remote Sensing.
Then and Now: Archaeology, History and Preservation in the Mountain State Region
Ohio Valley Native American Earthwork Sites and New Discoveries through Remote Sensing.
Jarrod Burks, Ph.D. Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc.
The Ohio Valley is renowned for its Native American earthwork sites, which were built between about 300 B.C and A.D. 400. These sites consist of earthen enclosures in the shapes of circles, squares, octagons, and other forms that enclosed spaces ranging from 50 feet to 1,300 feet across. The biggest sites had miles of earthen embankments and enormous mounds. It's believed these earthwork sites were the ceremonial centers for communities of people who lived in the surrounding area, and they were also used for burying the dead in many cases. In this presentation we learn about what earthwork sites consist of and how they have been studied in the past. We then explore some new and exciting findings from a selection of sites where remote sensing instruments have detected a wide range of features, from large pits filled with bright orange burned dirt to the remains of large wooden post circles, to entirely unknown earthwork complexes- there is much yet to discover about earthworks in the Ohio Valley.

Security preparations take place ahead of Trump state visit
'I don't think much of him. Trump told DailyMail.com on the South Lawn of the White House, in response to a question about whether he would be willing to meet with Khan during his UK State Visit. It was the president's last statement before leaving Washington for London; Khan called him 'a 20th century fascist' just days ago. Both Khan and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio have hate-hate relationships with the U.S. president. The Khan feud began in 2016 when Trump challenged him to an IQ test. Khan has objected to Trump's willingness to weigh in on the UK's leadership choices and its relationship with Europe, but when DailyMail.com asked him Sunday why he weighs in, he barked: 'Well, people ask me questions, like you, you're asking me a question. Don't ask me the question if you don't want me to talk about it.'

Enter the Dragon! Destroyer ship enters Portsmouth Harbour - Daily Mail
These glorious photographs show how HMS Dragon (pictured) returned to her home at Portsmouth Naval Base today. The Royal Navy’s Type 45 air defence destroyer returned to foggy Hampshire after an exercise in the Mediterranean. The 500ft destroyer had been on a routine port visit in Gibraltar last week, where local sea cadets were welcomed on board. And after leaving last Friday, HMS Dragon met the Navy’s future flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth on her way back to England. Five personnel from ‘Lizzie’ spent several days on board HMS Dragon to finesse their skills in the operations room. HMS Dragon also worked with HMS Queen Elizabeth to help her test several of her systems as they sailed together. HMS Dragon had also undertaken exercises in Scotland and the South West, before returning to Portsmouth this afternoon.

Destroyer,USCGC TANEY, Tour
The US Coast Guard Cutter TANEY, Secretary/Treasury Class Coast Guard cutters built in the mid 1930s saw extensive service in war and peace for half a century.
TANEY was designed for peacetime missions of law enforcement, search and rescue, and maritime patrol. Her original armament consisted of two 5”/51 caliber deck guns, and two 6-pounder saluting guns. TANEY was also originally equipped to carry a Grumman JF-2 “Duck” float plane.
In 1940 and 1941, TANEY received successive armament upgrades in anticipation of war. These upgrades included an additional 5”/51 caliber gun on the fantail where her float plane once stood, three 3”/50 caliber dual purpose guns (capable of shooting at both surface and airborne targets), additional .50 caliber machine guns, depth charge racks and throwers, and sonar for locating submarines.
On the eve of Pearl Harbor, TANEY was officially assigned to the US Navy's Destroyer Division 80, though she retained her Coast Guard crew. When Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor and other American military installations in Hawaii on 7 December 1941, TANEY was tied up at Pier 6, Honolulu, where she was able to repeatedly engage Japanese planes which over flew the city. When the attack subsided, TANEY immediately commenced anti-submarine patrol duties off Pearl Harbor.
After a major refit in the fall of 1943, during which the ship lost her older 5”/51s and 3”/50s and received four 5”/38 caliber dual purpose guns, On the evening 20 April 1944, TANEY narrowly dodged several torpedoes while fending off a large scale attack by German aircraft against Convoy UGS-38. Three ships were lost in the attack including the ammunition ship SS PAUL HAMILTON and the destroyer USS LANSDALE.
TANEY was under frequent attack and was credited with destroying four Kamikaze planes and 1 “Betty” bomber during 119 separate engagements in which her crew stood to battle stations.
Following World War II, TANEY was reconfigured for peacetime duties and from 1946 until 1972 she was home ported in Alameda, California. Known as “The Queen of the Pacific,” TANEY carried out virtually every peacetime Coast Guard duty including decades of Ocean Weather Patrol
By the late 1960s, TANEY had become the last United States vessel still in commission that had seen action during the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Hawaii. Consequently, from that time on she was often referred to as “The Last Survivor of Pearl Harbor.”
In 1969-70, during the Vietnam War, TANEY participated in “Operation Market Time”
September 1977, TANEY had the distinction of completing the Coast Guard's last ocean weather patrol when she closed out Ocean Weather Station HOTEL.
From 1977 until 1986, TANEY carried out search and rescue duties, fisheries patrols in the North Atlantic, drug interdiction patrols, she made 11 major seizures of illegal drug including a 1985 bust which netted 160 tons of marijuana – the largest in US history.
On 7 December 1986, after more than 50 years of continuous service, TANEY was decommissioned at Portsmouth, Virginia, and donated to the City of Baltimore to serve as a memorial and museum.
