About TAIPEI 101

Standing in the Xinyi District of Taipei, an area known for its financial services and vibrant shopping malls, TAIPEI 101 represents a worldwide precedent for sustainable skyscraper development. It achieved a LEED Platinum certification for Operations and Maintenance in 2011, an impressive feat for a tower of its size and complexity.

The tower rises from its base in a series of eight-story modules that flare outward, evoking the form of a Chinese pagoda. The top of each module houses mechanical floors that accommodate garbage systems, ventilation equipment, water storage, and MEP services. Near the top, a smaller tower caps the structure, forming a pinnacle that has become a familiar sight for the city. The façade of the tower features double-paned green glass curtain walls that are highly reflective and block solar heat gain by 50 percent. Other sustainable features include energy efficient luminaries, custom lighting controls, low-flow water fixtures, and a smart Energy Management and Control System.

TAIPEI 101 contains a 728-ton tuned mass damper (TMD), a large spherical steel pendulum that offsets lateral movements caused by strong winds. The TMD is located in a large multi-story cavity near the top of the tower. This location is ideal for countering overturning forces, a necessary precaution in a typhoon-prone part of the world.

Nearly every aspect of the building’s design is steeped in symbolism. The number “100” symbolizes perfection and “100 plus 1” represents further breakthrough and innovation, and the new beginning. After completion, the building has become a central component of New Year’s celebrations in Taiwan. Every year, all of the tower’s lights are turned off and each of the stacked modules light up in sequential order, counting down the last eight seconds before the New Year, which is followed by a dazzling fireworks display.

Construction of Taipei 101 began in 1999. The structure was topped out in 2003, and work was completed in 2004. The largest section of the building, between the base and the spire, consists of eight modules, or groupings, of eight stories each (eight being an auspicious number in Chinese numerology).

Taipei 101 is the iconic tourist spot and I can guarantee you 90% of the travellers coming to Taiwan for the first time visit this 2nd tallest building in the world. Taipei's landscape changed completely and because of Taipei 101, this Xinyi District has attracted so many more tourists compared to previously where it was simply a shopping destination for the locals. We got real lucky and skipped the long wait for brunch at The Diner (hurray!) and explored the MANY malls in the area. For dinner, we met up with my friend Brandon again and ended up singing the night away~ KTV = my kinda party hehe

Wufenpu (Chinese: 五分埔) is an area, best known for its wholesale garment market, located in the Xinyi District of Taipei, Taiwan. It is located at the foothill of Sishou Mountain (四獸山; lit. Mountains of the four beasts) and includes all five neighborhoods in Section 5 of Zhongxiao East Road, east to Songren Road, and Zhongpo North Road. It is the largest clothing market in Taipei. The area is nearby both the TRA Songshan Station and the Taipei Metro Houshanpi Station.

Han settlers built Taipei’s historic North Gate in the 18th century. A prime example of Qing dynasty architecture, it stands as a national treasure. For over 40 years though, a busy thoroughfare stood just centimeters away and marred the structure. With Taipei chosen to host its first major international athletic competition in 2017, the mayor decided that the road must come down and the site restored to its former glory. He challenged workers to take it down in a mere eight days.

A tour to H&M and Taobao store at Taipei City Hall station.

In this vlog, I'll show you what's inside the famous clothes store (H&M and Taobao). As we all know H&M is a very popular and international brand. Taobao is a big brand among Chinese and Taiwanese people. Taobao is owned by the Alibaba group which is a multinational company. Inside this video, you will see what kind of clothes and what's the average price there.

Taipei 101, formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, is a landmark supertall skyscraper located in Xinyi District, Taipei. With 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground, Taipei 101 displaced the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as the tallest building in the world by 56.1 m (184 ft).The building ranked officially as the world's tallest from 2004 until the opening of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010. In July 2011, the building was awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest award in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and became the tallest and largest green building in the world. Taipei 101 was designed by C.Y. Lee & partners and constructed primarily by KTRT Joint Venture. The construction was finished in 2004.

Taipei 101 is designed to withstand the typhoon winds and earthquake tremors common in its area of the Asia-Pacific. Planners aimed for a structure that could withstand gale winds of 60 m/s (197 ft/s, 216 km/h or 134 mph) and the strongest earthquakes likely to occur in a 2,500 year cycle.

Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers along with Evergreen Consulting Engineering designed a 660-tonne (728-short-ton) steel pendulum that serves as a tuned mass damper, at a cost of NT$132 million (US$4 million). Suspended from the 92nd to the 87th floor, the pendulum sways to offset movements in the building caused by strong gusts. Its sphere, the largest damper sphere in the world, consists of 41 circular steel plates of varying diameters, each 125 mm (4.92 in) thick, welded together to form a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter sphere. Two additional tuned mass dampers, each weighing 6 tonnes (7 short tons), are installed at the tip of the spire which help prevent damage to the structure due to strong wind loads.

The height of 101 floors commemorates the renewal of time: the new century that arrived as the tower was built (100+1) and all the new years that follow (1 January = 1-01). It symbolizes high ideals by going one better on 100, a traditional number of perfection. The number also evokes the binary numeral system used in digital technology.
