The British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04, generally known as the Discovery Expedition, was the first official British exploration of the Antarctic regions since James Clark Ross's voyage sixty years earlier.Organized on a large scale under a joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society , the new expedition aimed to carry out scientific research and geographical exploration in what was then largely an untouched continent. It launched the Antarctic careers of many who would become leading figures in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, including Robert Falcon Scott who led the expedition, Ernest Shackleton, Edward Wilson, Frank Wild, Tom Crean and William Lashly. Its scientific results covered extensive ground in biology, zoology, geology, meteorology and magnetism.

Discovery Point GraduationP: Part I of II
Discovery Point Graduation: Part I of II
RRS Discovery, Dundee, Scotland.
Discovery had coal-fired auxiliary steam engines, but had to rely primarily on sail beause the coal bunkers did not have sufficient capacity to take the ship on long voyages. She was rigged as a bargue. According to Shackleton, the ship was a bad sailer, and carried too much sail aft and not enough forward; while Scott worried that the design of the ship's hull was unsuitable for work in pack ice. The ship had a massively built wooden hull designed to withstand being frozen into the ice. The propeller and rudder could be hoisted out of the way to prevent ice damage. Iron -shod bows were securely raked so that when ramming the ice they would ride up over the margin and crush the ice with deadweight. The Discovery rolled badly in the open sea where the flat shallow hull, built with no protuberances to work well in ice provided minimal stability in heavy seas. The hull was made from five different types of wood to better withstand the compression of the icepack. The keep was made from the trunk of a single eucalyptus tree. Ballast in the hull was created from old iron cannon balls. Ship was rigged for scientific studies. The metallic parts of the forward part of the ship were made from bronze (non-metallic) to include the crew bed rails and anchor links.
The British National Antarctic Expedition was acclaimed upon it's return but was also in serious financial trouble, and so in 1905, Discovery was sold to the Hudson's Bay Company who used her as a cargo vessel between London and Hudon Bay, Canada until the First World War, when she began carrying munitions to Russia. one of the masts was removed during her days as a cargo vessel with the Hudson' Bay Company to make room for more cargo. In 1916, she was loaned to the British Government to rescue Shackleton's party marooned on Elephant Island but they were rescued before she arrived. In 1917, she carried supples to the White Russians during the Russian Civil War. At the end of the hostilities Discovery was chartered by various companies for work in the Atlantic, but outdated and outclassed by more modern merchant vessels she was soon laid up, spending the early 1920's as the headquarters of the 16th Stepney Sea Scouts.
Since the 1990's. the Discovery Point museum has concentrated on interpreting the vessel on all of her voyages, with personal items from the ship's crew as well as information on her scientific activities. Items range from the games played by the crew on her first expedition to examples of sea fauna. Star objects on display including Captain Scott's rifle and pipe. Her three main voyages, the National Antaractic Expedition (1901-1904) the Discovery Oceanographic Expedition (1925-1927) and the Banzare expedition (1929-31), are all explored in the museum through film and photographic evidence with artefacts from each era represented. The museum also holds other pieces from Scott's subsequent Terra Nova expedition and Shackleton's Endurance expedition.

Dundee, the City Of Discovery
Dundee today is known as the City of Discovery, in honour of Dundee's history of scientific activities and of the Royal Research Ship Discovery, Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic exploration vessel, which was built in Dundee and is now proudly berthed in the city harbour.Launched on 21 March 1901 and designed for Antarctic research, Discovery's first mission was the expedition that carried Scott and Shackleton on their first successful visit to the Antarctic known as the Discovery Expedition. Leaving the coast of the Isle of Wight on 6th August 1901 she first sighted the Antarctic coast on 8th January 1902. She was locked in ice at McMurdo sound for the next 2 years, after determining that Anarctica was a continent and relocating the Southern Magnetic Pole. She finally arrived home September 1904.Since then Discovery has been a cargo vessel, carried munitions in World War 1, and supplies to the White Russians in 1917. In 1932 Discovery carried a crew who studied migration patterns of whales in the South Seas. She was saved by the Maritime Trust in 1979 and in 1986 returned to Dundee - the town that built her and where she now permanently resides, in a custom built dock now called Discovery Point.
The historic ship is reason enough to visit Dundee, but there is more... also in the city harbour is Her Majesty's Frigate Unicorn..looking like she came straight out of a movie..This historic warship was never used in active service and is a survivior of the transitional period between traditional wooden sailing ships and the iron steamship. She is beautifully preserved and open to the public. The Unicorn was launched in 1824.
Part of Dundee's charm is its location. It is only 20 miles from Perth, (and the drive there is really picturesque), St. Andrews is 14 miles away (across the bridge) and Dundee is surrounded by the Sidlaw Hills, the Angus glens and of course, Glamis Castle. If you include Monifieth, Blairgowrie and surrounds, its population is about 170,000.
Dundee was famous for three things that as I child I found easy to remember - jute, jam and journalism, but of course there's a lot more to Dundee than that, and the so-called jam is actually marmalade which was supposedly invented by Janet Keiller in 1679. Keiller's marmalade is now a famous brand, exported worldwide.Picts lived on the site of what is now Dundee during the Iron Age and many battles were fought there in Medieval days. During Robert the Bruce's time Dundee was a walled city. In 1547 an English naval bombardment destroyed a great deal of it, and General Monck invaded Dundee in 1651 under the command of Oliver Cromwell.
It was also home to John Graham of Claverhouse, and there is still a district of Dundee called Claverhouse. 1st Viscount Dundee, who raised the Stewart standard on the Law Hill in 1689 support of James VII and the Jacobite cause had the nickname of Bonnie Dundee. The city surrounds the 571 foot high Law Hill, the basalt plug of an ancient volcano. Dundee was once home to the world's longest railway bridge which was destroyed the year after it was built in 1880. During a storm the bridge collapsed taking the train that was crossing it into the river. Not a single passenger survived.
