Newfoundland Make'n Break Fishin'...PLUS The Matthew Puts To Sea !!!
Here's a couple of musical-type chapters from my Newfoundland DVD Journey Into Wonder...
Number 1 is my friend Mike Jordan fishin' on Trinity Bay for some cod, in his restored 19 foot dory, powered by a makenbreak or single-lunger engine that's at least 70 years old, I'd say. This is set to I's theB'y, the famous Newf folksong, as recorded by another buddy, Martin Hiscock, for his CD Songs of Newfoundland.
Number 2 concerns the replica of John Cabot's sailing ship, the Matthew, which is usually moored in the Bonavista, Newfoundland harbour for the tourists to tour. In September 2007 though, she took her one and only (so far) trip out onto the open waters of Bonavista Bay. This is set to another Newfoundland classic, Heave Away, also from the same Martin Hiscock CD.
If you'd like the whole music CD, just email Martin at martinh@nf.sympatico.ca.
If you'd like the whole 50-minute, 10-chapter DVD crammed full of all sorts wunnerful Newfoundlandia, email me at fishersofmenvideo@yahoo.ca
The Discovery of the Codfish
White men reportedly discovered Bering Sea cod in 1857 when a cargo vessel bound for Siberia was stymied by ice. Crewmembers tossed fishing lines over the side in search of fresh food. They soon feasted on a fish that had long been a staple of the European diet but was believed to inhabit only Atlantic waters.
The sailors had discovered not just the Pacific codfish but one of the world's great continental shelves, a huge expanse of shallow water roiled by currents that cause constant upwelling of nutrients from the ocean bottom and stir the mixture into a rich, bio-diverse soup.
It may be the most productive ocean ecosystem in the world.
Alaska's offshore waters would one day become the scene of global competition over resources that have replenished themselves with astonishing profusion despite decades of intense commercial fishing. This abundance would convince a reluctant United States government to sign the Law of the Sea Treaty that extended national boundaries to 200 miles offshore. The economic opportunity it represented changed the way we manage the ocean.
Within a generation of the discovery of the Pacific codfish, a new industry would be born. Then as now, Seattle was its hub. Watch the birth of the Alaska fishing industry in this excerpt from John Sabella's documentary Centuries of Fish, Seattle's Dynamic Distant Water Fishing Fleet.
