The blizzard that buried St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
St. John's, a city on Newfoundland island off Canada's Atlantic coast, is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador province. Its harbour was settled by the British in the 1600s. Downtown is known for its colourful row houses. Above the city is Signal Hill with walking trails and the site of the first transatlantic wireless communication, Cabot Tower, which commemorates John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland.
A state of emergency was declared in St. John’s and other parts of Newfoundland as a huge storm buried houses and cars in snowdrifts
Even by Newfoundland and Labrador standards, this was an epic one. Winds hit upwards of 160 km/h and 76 cm of new snow fell in parts of the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas overnight in a storm that seemed more like a hurricane than a blizzard. Snow drifts buried houses and cars as St. John’s and other nearby communities declared a state of emergency. A statement from the city said the declaration “will remain in effect until further notice… All businesses are ordered to remain closed.”

Berry Picking in Newfoundland and Labrador
There's never a shortage of fresh, ripe berries in Newfoundland and Labrador. Watch three generations pick wild blueberries and tell a few stories along the East Coast Trail on the Avalon Peninsula. After a day in the sun and the fresh, sea air, it's time to taste what they're like in home baked goods like jam, muffins, and pie. Yum.

Calgary Flood Evacuation - Discovery Ridge - June 20, 2013
The Calgary Police Service sent both ground and air support to announce evacuation orders to the community of Discovery Ridge, in Southwest Calgary. A HAWCS helicopter circled the community announcing immediate evacuation orders over its loudspeaker. Meanwhile, cruisers tried to clear traffic away from the area and water rescue crafts were towed in to assist in managing the situation. All this followed more than 24 hours of heavy rains, threatening the safety of residents in low-lying communities throughout the city and province, especially those near creeks and rivers.
Apologies for the video quality; it was shot impromptu on my cellphone, from a distance.
Welcome to Lakeview in Calgary's Southwest | Lakeview Real Estate for Sale Calgary
Lakeview is a beautiful community in Calgary's SW quadrant - an award winning community - it is easy to see why. To view more community information or to view homes and condos for sale please visit :
One of Calgary’s most beautiful mid-century neighbourhoods are in Lakeview, situated just north of the Glenmore Reservoir in South West Calgary. It was built in the early 1960s on a flat piece of land south of Glenmore Trail, between 24 St SW and 37 St SW. Lakeview and its sister community – Lakeview Village - are only a 15-minute drive by car to downtown Calgary. It’s proximity to Crowchild, Glenmore and Sarcee Trails and the impending Ring Road, plus amenities such as Mount Royal University, athletic parks, golf courses and water sports on the reservoir, make Lakeview very desirable.
Lakeview real estate is adjacent to Lincoln Park, North Glenmore Park and the re-imagined neighbourhood of Currie.
The annual incomes of Lakeview residents are just above the median income in the City of Calgary. The majority of Lakeview homes for sale are single-family bungalows, with a limited selection of multi-family dwellings. Lakeview Village on the south end of the neighbourhood backs onto North Glenmore Park. This area has estate-sized homes on large lots with many of the original two-storey homes making way for elegant “super-estate” homes with double and triple car garages.
Lakeview is a destination neighbourhood, with just two entry points into the neighbourhood.
Lakeview Homes for Sale
Lakeview real estate boasts a large number of single-family homes, split-level and two-storey homes constructed in the early 1960s. Few original homes remain and most have been updated or added onto. The Village area of Lakeview features homes on 60 or even 80-foot lots with homes in excess of 3,000 square feet. Home prices are above the average prices with estate-homes in Lakeview Village priced well in excess of $1 million.
There are a select number of townhomes developments in the heart of Lakeview with some rental apartment buildings on the west side of the community.
There are wonderful large trees in Lakeview and an excellent network of walking paths instead of back lanes in The Village - an unusual amenity for a community of its vintage. Homes in Lakeview show pride of ownership on every street.
Lakeview Neighbourhood Amenities
Lakeview’s most natural amenity is the parkland around the reservoir. To the south is North Glenmore Park with picnic areas, fire pits, plenty of wide-open grassy areas, natural tree stands and cycle paths. Along the high banks of the north shores of the reservoir, there are benches to sit and look out over the water, the Weaselhead Natural Area and the Foothills beyond. It’s one of Calgary’s most enchanting view points. To the east is the venerable Earl Grey Golf Course and just north of that, the public Lakeview Golf Course.
There are canoe and rowing club facilities next to the golf course. Glenmore Athletic Park is north of Lakeview with a hockey rink, running and cycle track, soccer fields, salt water pool, ball diamonds and tennis bubble.
Calgary Flames Community Arenas, The Garrison Curling Club and the Military Museums are just up the road. Rockyview General Hospital is just five minutes east of Lakeview. There’s a wonderful neighbourhood plaza with a great restaurant, fast food, medical services, ladies clothing and a hobby shop. Even better, Calgary’s largest shopping entre – Chinook Mall – is a five-minute trip by car.
Mount Royal University is a brisk 20-minute walk north. Lakeview has excellent bus routes which take commuters directly to schools, downtown or east to the nearest LRT Station.
Lakeview Schools
As an older community, Lakeview has been fortunate to keep many of it’s good schools right in the neighbourhood operational. Elementary-aged students there’s Jennie Elliot and for separate school students, nearby St. James in North Glenmore Park. For junior high students, there’s Bishop Pinkham. Two original schools are now charter schools – The Calgary Girl’s School and Connect Charter School for students in Grade 4-9 with a science and technology focus.
Central Memorial High School is north of Lakeview at 50 Ave SW and Bishop Carol, a Catholic school, is located next to Mount Royal University. There is a dedicated bus route which travels directly to the University of Calgary.
