In this episode we are checking out Veit Springs on the flank of the San Francisco Peaks and Picture Canyon off old Route 66. They are similar hikes in length, style, difficulty and they both have a historical element to them.
With the exploration of the area, the Veit Springs hike can be about 2.4 miles for the loop. I would recommend setting aside about 2 hours at least to get to the pictographs and homestead to explore. This page has pretty good directions and info on the trail:
Picture canyon has multiple routes you can take with the longest at 2.8 miles for the Tom Moody Loop Trail. In this video we go out to the petroglyphs on the Tom Mood Loop Trail, but then head back on the Don Weaver Trail for a loop of about 2 miles. Here is the City of Flagstaff website for the area where you can download a trail map:
Both of these hikes are moderate to easy and are dog friendly and kid friendly. Just be sure to be respectful of the cultural and historical significance of both areas.
Until next time, keep exploring my friends!

The Plague: Black Death Found In Arizona Near Flagstaff
The fleas that tested positive came from prairie dog burrows on a hiking trail, Coconino County Public Health Services District officials said in a release.
The plague, or Yersinia pestis, is the same disease that devastated Europe in the 17th century. It is also known as the Black Death.
Coconino Public Health officials urge visitors to avoid the burrows. Dogs are required by law to be on a leash.
The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 TO 200 MILLION people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53.
Hiking Horseshoe Bend - Page, Arizona
On this evening (December 2017), I hiked Horseshoes Bend in Page, Arizona. It’s about 3/4 of a mile walk out to the edge overlooking Horseshoe Bend (1.25 mile round trip). This location is extremely popular as you’ll find lots of individuals enjoying breathtaking views at the edge of the cliff. No matter what day anyone attends, it’s always a sight to see.
