The Black Beach of Greenland's Disko Island
Sailing across the clear blue sea from the west coast of Greenland, a lush green island surrounded by dazzling white icebergs comes into view.
Brick red mountains tower above, while waves crash against the dark black shore of Siorarsuit beach, which translated means The Great Sands.

Sea Swimming in Greenland: ACDC Summer School 2014 (Disko Island)
Glaciology, oceanography and climate science PhD students took the opportunity to go sea swimming during a lunch break at the Advanced Climate Dynamics Course (ACDC) run by the University of Bergen. The 2014 course was centred around understanding the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet. For more info see:

In 2012 I went to Greenland for an eleven-days boat trip along the coast of Greenland in the Disko Bugt (Disko Bay).
Of course we visited Disko Island too. From Qeqertarsuaq we made a beautiful walk to the coast of Disko Island.
I filmed a lot more during this trip, you can watch these videos by clicking on the videos at the end of this one or by visiting my channel and clicking on the Greenland Playlist.

Disko Island Expedition: Snow Algae
In August 2013, the Deep Carbon Observatory and the UK Centre for Astrobiology sent an international team of researchers to Disko Island, Greenland, to assess the value of this site to deep carbon research ( While there, expedition leader Claire Cousins (University of Edinburgh, UK) captured video footage of the research taking place. In this first video, Mark Fox-Powell (University of Edinburgh, UK) talks about the snow algae of Lyngsmarksbraen.

The land of icebergs under the midnight sun: Greenland (Ilulissat & Disko Island)
Greenland: Ilulissat & Disko Island - our first trip above the Arctic Circle, at 69°N. The sun doesn't set between early-June and mid-July, so we enjoyed endless days in the land of the midnight sun.
Undulatus asperitas cloud formation: Disko Island, Greenland
Undulatus asperitas cloud formation over Disko Bay (W. Greenland) following a storm. This rare cloud formation is thought to form as clouds pass over rough terrain causing atmospheric turbulence - in this case, the Greenland Ice Sheet. Filmed with a Sony EX1 during the University of Bergen ACDC summer school on Disko Island. Camera: Laurence Dyke. Music: Tycho - A Walk.
Undulatus asperitas has now been officially accepted by the World Meteorological Organisation as a new cloud type - the first for more than 60 years. The name has changed from the informal `asperatus' (roughened in latin) to the noun: `asperitas' (roughness).
Leap in Greenland!
LEAPfactory is partner of @aristonofficial for the amazing mission called The Ariston Comfort Challenge. Their goal was to build an advanced base for the Arctic Station on Disko Island, in Greenland. In this Island surrounded by ice, a team of researchers of the University of Copenhagen is focusing its studies in climate change. They renounced to their comfort for the planet's future: Ariston and LEAPfactory went there to bring them comfort even where it seemed impossibile to find.

60-SECOND EXCURSION: Kayaking and landing near Greenland's Disko Island
A kayak excursion near Greenland's Disko Island leads to a landing on a small unnamed island nearby, where exploring its landscape in bright red drysuits feels reminiscent of a Star Trek crew, bolding exploring new worlds. (Shot with iPhone 7 and GoPro Hero 7, edited on iMovie for iOS. August 23, 2019.)
60-SECOND EXCURSIONS by the The Global Trip (travel writer/videographer Erik Trinidad) is a series of short, quickly edited travel videos that are 60 seconds or less, originally posted on Instagram/Facebook accounts @theglobaltrip and @plausiblyridiculous. They had been shot and edited on the fly (with iMovie for iOS) during an active trip, and were posted in chronological order—typically within a couple of hours of the moment, in near real-time.
