Iowa Apples Recovering
Iowa isn't exactly known for its apple production, but around a thousand acres are devoted to orchards around the state. According to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, in 2013 more than 7 million pounds of apples were picked in Iowa. That was way up from 2012 when only 700,000 were harvested. The Agribusiness Report talked to local grower Brian Etchen and John Whitaker to find out why.

Orchard Meadows in Johnston, Iowa
Wilson's Orchard Branching Out
IOWA CITY’S LOCAL WILSON’S APPLE ORCHARD IS JUST ABOUT TO BREAK-GROUND ON A NEW PROJECT AFTER A SUMMER THAT SEEMED CUSTOM-MADE FOR GROWING APPLES.
BUSINESS HAS BEEN BOOMING, AND THEY’RE LOOKING TO EXPAND. BUT IT’S NOT IN SIZE THAT THE ORCHARD WILL GROW.
RATHER, THE OWNER OF WILSON’S ORCHARD, PAUL RASCH, HOPES TO SHRINK THE DISTANCE BETWEEN LOCAL FARMS AND LOCAL CUSTOMERS. BRIANNA JETT HAS THE STORY.
TAKE PKG
TRT: 1:30
WILSON’S ORCHARD HAS A STRONG HISTORY OF CONNECTING CUSTOMERS TO THE ROOTS OF WHERE THEIR APPLES COME FROM – SOMETIMES EVEN LITERALLY. ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS, THE ORCHARD CAN TRANSFORM INTO A CLASSROOM AND OFFER A LESSON ON HOW FOOD IS MADE.
JESSICA DANILSON, A FIRST-TIME VISITOR AT THE ORCHARD AND A MOTHER, SAID SHE WORKS HARD TO MAKE SURE HER CHILDREN UNDERSTAND HOW IT ALL WORKS.
Jessica Danilson, first-time customer:
“Going into the grocery store, I’m amazed they don’t know where some of that stuff comes from”
BUT NOW, THE OWNER OF WILSON’S ORCHARD IS TAKING IT ONE STEP FURTHER.
Brianna Jett, @brianna_jett:
“Wilson’s Orchard is more than just a place to pick your apples. They offer everything from honey to home-made apple cider donuts. But in the next year, they’re hoping to expand and offer so much more.”
BY NEXT AUGUST, WILSON’S ORCHARD WILL BE HOME TO A CIDERY.
Paul Rasch, owner Wilson's Orchard:
“We’re kind of caught up in making really excellent hard cider. And that’s been really fun. “
BUT IN ADDITION TO THE ALOCHOLIC DRINK, THE BARN RASCH PLANS TO BUILD WILL OFFER CUSTOMERS A LOT MORE. NAMELY—ANOTHER WAY TO CONNECT TO LOCAL FOOD.
RASCH WANTS TO WORK WITH OTHER LOCAL GROWERS TO PROVIDE ALL KINDS OF MEAT AND PRODUCE THAT IS GROWN HERE IN IOWA, AND STAYS HERE IN IOWA.
“I think we’re finally getting back to a reality that includes getting customers and farms connected kind of in a web. “
IT’S NOT JUST A BUSINESS MOVE. RASCH SAID IT’S AN ETHICAL ISSUE—WE OWE IT TO OURSELVES TO BE AWARE OF WHAT WE’RE BUYING AND WHAT WE’RE EATING.
BRIANNA JETT, DAILY IOWAN TV.

Williams Orchards | Ken’s last season picking apples | Rolling Prairie Indiana
Please give a Thumbs Up, SUBSCRIBE for more videos. Thanks! KEN'S LAST SEASON PICKING. It’s November 4th at the farm. Ken’s continue’s to pick and tell me more stories about life at William’s Orchards back in the 1930’s and 40’s. Talks about the Great Depression and the early 40’s when they had a busload of workers from the south arrive to pick. They would pick them up in Michigan City Indiana. “They were volume picker’s.” he said. One year we packed 33,000 bushels of Apples. Ken said. They’d roll them off their chests. They got seventeen cents a bushel. He then goes on to tell Rick Erwin about what it takes to start your own apple orchard business. “You pretty much have to be a junior to a senior farmer to learn the apple business.” he says.
The day ended and it was cold! He unloaded his truckload of 1/2 bushels into the barn and said it was too late in the season to sell the apples but would give them away to those in need. Ken stopped picking that year at 95 but continued for another three years cutting grass. Here’s another clip and bit of sage advice from a third generation apple orchard farmer Ken Williams of Williams Orchards in Rolling Prairie Indiana.
Rick Erwin Media spent an entire season with Ken, watching him pick apples while passing through with his camera learning about the real meaning of life. This is from an excerpt from Rick Erwin’s, Your Town Story documentary “Looking For Apple Ken.” Enjoy! For more info about Rick Erwin Media and how REM can visit your town; Go to erwinmedia.com
