Diving Snorkeling Cozumel Mexico (2019 Episode #2) Maya Riviera, Caribbean Sea
Love Diving Snorkeling Cozumel Mexico 2019, Maya Riviera, Caribbean Sea. While traveling to and staying on Cozumel for a week, this is the diving that I did. I stayed at 2Tank Dive Hostel which I highly recommend. I did no prior planning of where I would dive and just showed up and winged it. The front desk personnel at 2Tank were very helpful in steering me in the right direction, but getting to these locations was a challenge to say the least.
Please check back weekly as I will be making several videos of this trip and breaking down the experiences by location and what I went thru along the way. I if you have comments or questions, please post them as I would love to get feed back. I want to hear from you !
This first Video starts with the Journey from Merida Yucatan Mexico to Playas del Carmen via ADO bus. From Playas, I caught a ferry to Cozumel. I included maps for reference and to the spot where this video was captured. I walked about 45 minutes in 98 F to get to the location. This takes place next to a Car Ferry along the reef to the ferry, under the pier to the boats and back.
Do you have any favorite places to dive in Cozumel ? please let me know in comments. I look for places with easy shore access.
Cozumel is an island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen and close to the Yucatán Channel. The municipality is part of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The economy of Cozumel is based on tourism with visitors able to benefit from the island's balnearios, diving, and cultural attractions. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel.
Cozumel is mostly undeveloped Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, a popular cruise ship port of call famed for its scuba diving. At Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, there's diving spots around a section of the Mesoamerican Reef and the Museo Subacuático de Arte’s submerged sculptures. Chankanaab is an eco park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees and sea turtles.
The island is covered with mangrove forest which has many endemic animal species. Cozumel is a flat island based on limestone, resulting in a karst topography. The highest natural point on the island is less than 15m (49ft) above sea level. The cenotes are deep water-filled sinkholes formed by water percolating through the soft limestone soil for thousands of years.
Cozumel has tropical savanna climate under the koppen climate classification that closely borders on a tropical monsoon cimate. The dry season is short, from February to April, but even in these months precipitation is observed, averaging about 45 mm (1.8in) of rain per month. The wet season is lengthy, covering most of the months, with September and October being the wettest months, when precipitation averages over 240 mm (9.4in). Thunderstorms can occasionally occur during the wet season. Temperatures tend to remain stable with little variation from month to month though the temperatures are cooler from December to February with the coolest month averaging 22.9 C (73.2 F).
The Maya are believed to have first settled Cozumel by the early part of the 1st millennium AD, and older Preclassic Olmec artifacts have been found on the island as well. The island was sacred to Ix Chel, the Maya Moon Goddess, and the temples here were a place of pilgrimage, especially by women desiring fertility. There are a number of ruins on the island, most from the Post-Classic period. The largest Maya ruins on the island were near the downtown area and have now been destroyed. Today, the largest remaining ruins are at San Gervasio, located approximately at the center of the island.
The first Spanish expedition to visit Cozumel was led by Juan de Grijalva. In the following year Hernan Cortes stopped by the island on his way to Veracruz. The Grijalva and Cortés expeditions were both received peacefully by the Maya of Cozumel, unlike the expeditions’ experiences on other parts of the mainland. Even after Cortés destroyed some of the Maya idols on Cozumel and replaced them with an image of the Virgin Mary, the native inhabitants of the island continued to help the Spanish re-supply their ships with food and water so they could continue their voyages.

Scuba Diving Paradise Reefs Located on the Southwest side of Cozumel
Paradise Reef is actually three separate reefs with a maximum depth of 45 feet. That makes for a host of awesome dive sites that are easily accessible from the beach which makes it a great dive site for those who are new to scuba diving..
Expect to see plenty of lobsters, crabs, angelfish, yellowtails, octopuses moray eels and toadfish here among all of the colors, not to mention balloon-shaped corals. This is a popular site for night dives, so if you’ve ever dreamed of doing one, hire a good divemaster to tour you through the best spots and keep you safe.
Located on the Southwest side of Cozumel, the Palancar Reef also consists of many different sections, making it a rewarding place to explore. The colorful Palancar Gardens make for an appropriate novice dive site.
Palancar horseshoe, a site packed with coral heads up to 80 feet in height, is better suited to the intermediate diver. Palancar Caves and Bricks are also both great choices for intermediates, with buttresses and tunnels to explore in the former and a stunning blue abyss to oggle in the latter. Marine life along the reef includes: sponges, turtles, sharks and eagle rays, along with the requisite colorful fish.

Cozumel Mexico - The Iberostar All-Inclusive! Fun & Beautiful!
This is the Iberostar on Cozumel, Mexico. Most of the vacationers at Iberostar were divers, each day the dive boat operators would pull up to the pier with their boats to gather up the divers. That means that during the day there are very few people around the resort and at night most of the divers are off to bed pretty early so the atmosphere is quiet. Although they have a great kids club with supervision and activities, older children might get bored. The beach is nice but is a little rocky. Food was good, accommodations peaceful, clean and quiet. During early December visit the mornings were sunny and warm, around 2 pm rains would come for 15 - 30 minutes, and then the sunshine would return. Sunset spectacular from the beach.
Scuba diving cozumel swim through!
This is a short video of a swim through we did on 6-27-19
I give a little advice on proper swim through technique. I also share my story of ending up merging with another dive group outside of a swim through (different than the one in the video) only to look around and realize my group is gone! Having not seen my group go in and realizing I'm not with my group it was slightly nerve wracking as its not always easy to see the entrance to a swim through!
Luckily the other dive master realized what was going on and saw my group go into the swim through. She pointed me where to go and i swam pretty fast. This made me out of breath and that is one of the worst feelings in the world. Being out of breath on scuba is an intense practice in mind over matter. Your body wants to go up but your mind tells you, you need to chill.
Enjoy.
Hopefully someone likes my fun projector reel at the beginning. That was fun to make and a spontaneous creative idea. I had the right sequence of photos to make it.
Dive shop I booked my dive with:
I have used them twice and i love the guides and the small boats!

Palancar Garden – Divers of all levels will enjoy the slight-to-moderate current that carries them along while exploring the many finger coral formations here. This strip reef is about 20 metres/66 feet wide and dissected by many fissures and caverns. Within the many sheltered areas, divers can spot huge stovepipe sponges stretching out from the reef and black coral in the deeper areas. Fish such as juvenile yellow head wrasse hide in the deep yellow tubes at night for protection and sightings of butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish and damselfish are frequent.
Visibility – The clear water has visibility that ranges from 24-30 metres/80-100 feet.
Featured Creatures – Splendid toadfish, eagle rays, grunts, snapper, angelfish, parrotfish, moray eels, grouper, hawksbill turtles, trumpet fish, wrasse, hogfish, spotted drum fish, amberjacks, lobster, octopus and even long snout seahorses.
Recommended Training – Take the PADI Deep Diver, PADI Drift Diver and Peak Performance Buoyancy courses for diving the fabulous walls. The PADI Cavern Diver course is also a good choice for many sites with swim-throughs.
Cozumel- Ten kilometres/six miles off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula lies Cozumel, the “Island of the Swallows.” Barely 50 by 16 kilometres/30 by 10 miles, this diminutive island has become a popular scuba diving destination. Cozumel has all the ingredients for a great dive getaway – friendly locals, good food, lively nightspots, towering coral formations, warm water, great underwater visibility and white sandy beaches. Most dive sites are found within the boundaries of Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, which protects much of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, the Meso-American reef system. Created in 1996, the park is home to some 26 types of corals with more than 100 subspecies. More than 500 fish species live in the park, including the endemic splendid toadfish. Due to marine life protection programs, divers can also often see loggerhead, hawksbill and green turtles. From shallow sheltered shore dives to secluded, seldom visited, current-swept drift dives, there’s a dive in Cozumel for everyone.

Visit to Sky Reef in Cozumel for chilling on the beach, having some good Mexican food, and AWESOME snorkeling!
This wasn't a Carnival excursion. We Googled snorkeling spots in Cozumel and after a lot of reading and Youtube videos settled on Sky Reef.
Our taxi driver (a local) told us Sky Reef was his go to spot for snorkeling. His second beach snorkel spot is Playa Palancar, which was also our second choice. Looks like careful research paid off!
