IPNLF Fisheries Research Diaries | Maldives
The International Pole & Line Foundation's (IPNLF) Fisheries Science Research Officer, Kelsey Miller, has been working with the Marine Stewardship Council certified skipjack and yellowfin tuna pole-and-line fishery, collecting data on tuna catch, baitfish catch, bycatch and fuel use. This short film is a snapshot of the work Kelsey does on her fisheries research trips in the Maldives. On this research trip in Thinadhoo, the average size of landed skipjack was greater than size at maturity (skipjack reach maturity between 40-45cm) and there was zero bycatch - good news for Maldivian marine life!
Kelsey's research is important for the progression of sustainable pole-and-line fisheries worldwide; the data she collects feeds into a number of organisations for scientific studies and publications:
• IPNLF's Technical Reports: ipnlf.org/downloads/
• Indian Ocean Tuna Commission: iotc.org
• Maldivian Marine Research Centre: mrc.gov.mv/
Studies conducted by these organisations furthers scientific understanding of tuna biology, stocks and fishery activities and the results inform governing bodies to support management decisions.
Fishing by pole-and-line is the most responsible method to fish for tuna as the fish are caught one-by-one, with virtually no bycatch. There are environmental, social, and economic benefits. If you want to know more about fishing by pole-and-line, please watch our video Pole-and-Line Fishing in Action: youtube.com/watch?v=NXJiePd5bjc

The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) works to develop, support and promote socially and environmentally responsible pole-and-line and hand-line tuna fisheries around the world. IPNLF’s ambition is to contribute to thriving coastal fisheries, including the people, communities, businesses and seas connected with them.
As a hub for sustainably-minded organisations, we use the influence of the market to forge change through practical fishery projects and stakeholder cooperation. IPNLF membership is open to organisations involved in the pole-and-line tuna supply chain, from fishing associations to suppliers, to retailers. Allied with our members, we demonstrate the value of pole-and-line tuna to consumers, policy-makers and throughout the supply chain.
We work across science, policy and the seafood sector, using an evidence-based, solutions-focused approach with guidance from our Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees.
IPNLF was officially registered in the United Kingdom in 2012 (Charity 1145586), with a branch office in London, the Maldives and a staff presence in Indonesia.

Maldives coral reef Hideaway Beach Maldives House Reef august 2015
The house reef (the coral reef that runs alongside the island) at Hideaway Beach Maldives is one of the most spectacular in the country.
Literally just a few metres from the beach, the reef runs almost the entire length of the west side of our island, making it close to one kilometer of amazing snorkeling and diving.
Here you can easily find colourful corals, turtles, sharks and an amazing variety of tropical fish who call the reef home.

Snorkeling in Wayag, Raja Ampat, with SHARKS
Snorkeling in front of office of National park in Wayag. Usually there are many blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) swimming there that are fed by the staff of the national park.
Among the most abundant sharks inhabiting the tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this species prefers shallow, inshore waters. Its exposed first dorsal fin is a common sight in the region. Most blacktip reef sharks are found over reef ledges and sandy flats, though they have also been known to enter brackish and freshwater environments. This species typically attains a length of 1.6 m (5.2 ft).
French naturalists Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard originally described the blacktip reef shark during the 1817–1820 exploratory voyage of the corvette Uranie. The type specimen was a 59 cm (23 in)-long juvenile male caught off the island of Waigeo, west of New Guinea.
Under most circumstances, the blacktip reef shark has a timid demeanor and is easily frightened away by swimmers. However, its inshore habitat preferences bring it into frequent contact with humans, and thus it is regarded as potentially dangerous. As of early 2009, 11 unprovoked attacks and 21 attacks total (none fatal) were listed on the International Shark Attack File that are attributable to the blacktip reef shark.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed the blacktip reef shark as Near Threatened.
Filmed in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia in November 2018.

Rowing in Maldives - Addu City
Dispersed along the Indian Ocean, the Maldives archipelago has had a long history of rowing as an integral mode of transportation between its islands. Out of the 1192 coral islands that are spread across the equator, only 199 are inhabited with a small population of just over 300000 island dwellers. Setting off into the vast blue unknown was the only means of getting from one place to another. It was once common to see rowing races taking place up until the early 1980's. However with the introduction of modern mechanical boats, the practice of rowing has gradually disappeared in the Maldives like in most parts of the world.
Today rowing has become a much enjoyed recreational sport in many countries. It is a water-based endurance sport which is considered to be one of the most technical and hardest sports in the world. It is a great way to develop your fitness, maintain discipline and strengthen your teamwork.
In 2010, British Olympic silver medalist, Guin Batten and Umar Jamaal embarked on a quest to revive rowing in Maldives with the assistance of the British Rowing Association and Westminster School. Rowing Association of Maldives was established and the first rowing programs were initiated and coaches were sent to Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, Addu atoll and Hulhumale subsequently.
The rowing program in Addu has been running effectively for the last three years. Three different coaches have successfully trained a number of students from local schools. Swimming lessons and activities such as beach cleanup programs are also conducted occasionally by the coaches.
In 2012, Natasha Howard, one of the rowing coach volunteers in Addu managed to organize a trip to South Korea for two young rowers to compete in the Asian 2012 Olympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju. It was a remarkable opportunity for the students to learn and experience rowing in an international arena. More such international opportunities are available for Maldives Rowing Association to pursue as it progresses.
It would be rewarding to see the hard work and efforts put in by all those involved manage to revive this lost tradition. By spreading this sport across Maldives and with organizing inter-atoll competitions, it is possible to produce athletes who can compete in international competitions. Hopefully these activities will inspire the young generation of Maldives to seize the occasion to discover the spirit of being the true children of the sea.
