Divers flock back to Egypt's Red Sea resorts
The diving industry is making a comeback in Egypt, particularly in the Red Sea resort town of Dahab, which boasts some of the world's best diving sites, such as the Canyon, where these divers are seen testing the waters.
Frank Vahrenhorst, diving organizer at the H20 Dive Center says the diving conditions are suitable for both beginner and advanced divers. Reef fish can be spotted less than one meter from the shoreline in some areas.
Even the courses here are very nice to do here because the visibility is very good. There's hardly any current and basically we have swimming pool like conditions and the marine life here is absolutely stunning.
Before Egypt's revolution began 18 months ago, the popular Red Sea coast was seen as a safe tourist destination despite sporadic terrorist attacks.
Tourism always bounced back, as European tourists flocked to the area on a seasonal basis looking to do water sports, desert treks, or simply to relax and enjoy the sun.
I've only dived in the Red Sea. I'm only diving since six months, but I love it. I came here on a vacation for three weeks and two months later I came back. And now I've been here for already two months, always diving, diving.
The recent national unrest however has put a firm dampener on Red Sea resorts, as they have observed a steep decline in tourism, with some tourists fearing the ongoing unrest. Others like Belgian visitor Bram Te Rijdt says politics shouldn't hinder local business.
I don't think it's a good idea not to come since we are not helping the locals by not coming. It's a political thing so what can we do about it? It's above our heads.
Mahmoud Aouda, a local Bedouin dive instructor said work has declined despite recent resumption of visitors.
We are still working and people are coming. The Red Sea attracts people from the whole world. Americans, Europeans, Asians are still coming. Work is still good, but not like before the Revolution. Work has slowed down at about 50 to 60 percent.
Vahrenhorst appears to be positive, however, saying his business has barely suffered.
I think most tourists who come diving here, even after the revolution or whatever problem you have, most of those customers or divers are coming back, because they've been here before. You obviously have the odd ones who've never been here before, but we see a lot of returning customers and divers.
Dahab in the Sinai Peninsula, is more than 600 km (373 miles) from Cairo. Although it has long been a popular tourist destination, the town is surrounded by stretches of beach with no urbanisation and is far from the traffic, bustle and politics of the Egyptian capital.
The only upside to the decline in tourists, according to expert divers, is that the coral reef has a chance to recover from human disturbance, as well as an increase in fish.

Dahab 2013. The sleepy town that has so much to offer
Dahab is a peaceful Bedouin village in the South Sinai desert, on the Red Sea coast. Despite the turmoil in North Egypt and Cairo, Dahab still enjoy peaceful times. The main attraction of Dahab is the scuba diving with popular dives sites like the Canyon and The Blue Hole. If you don't dive, the reefs are shallow enough for great snorkelling with abundant sea life. There are many other activities that can keep you busy, like quad biking, camel rides, trips into the desert, Bedouin dinners, trips to Mount Sinai and St. Catherine Monastery and many more.
Dahab is just an hours drive north of busy Sharm El Sheikh. And of course it's a lot more easy on your budget.

Urban Egyptians relocate to laid back Dahab
(3 Feb 2017) LEADIN:
Tourism has declined in towns like Dahab that once depended on the industry for their survival.
But residents moving from the city in search of a more laid back lifestyle are giving the town a new lease of life.
STORY-LINE:
Dahab is one place in Egypt where people can simply take it easy. Seeing tourists stroll along the seaside, it is easy to see why people are drawn to live here.
This used to be a thriving tourist hub. But since the economic situation in Egypt worsened, the tourism industry took a severe hit, and Dahab sees less visitors than it once did.
But the small town in southern Sinai continues to draw in those attracted to the idea of living a simple life free from worry.
Some have set up small businesses to make a living. Gomaa Farag, a local Bedouin who used to work with tourists as a desert guide, is one of those. After the 2011 revolution, he found himself out of work with no income or occupation.
Farag decided that rather than sitting around wasting his days, he would channel his creativity into a making the things he needs. He now recycles various objects into handicrafts that he hopes to one day sell.
If I need a lamp for my house or I have an idea, I will do it with my hands. I thought about using beads to make lamps and to create something for myself at first because I am still learning how to make something nice. Later maybe I can sell some of them, he says.
He says Dahab is a good place to live a simple life.
Recently, the town has seen waves of Egyptian tourists, many from Cairo, visiting for the first time. For some it has been a life changing experience.
In Dahab's Masbat Bay a new takeaway has opened selling corn on the cob and salads. Dora, meaning corn, is a start up created by Methat Kilany and Nabila Mohamed Radwan.
They are from Cairo and used to work for a private education and entertainment centre for families and kids.
During a short stay in Dahab they realised nobody was offering grilled corn on the cob, and decided to open a takeaway to cater for this.
As soon as we came to Dahab we felt inner peace, says Kilany.
Kilany and Radwan prepare different salads, all containing corn, and offer various marinated corns on the cob.
Radwan says her life has changed a lot since moving here. Even though she has more responsibility in her work, the pressure and stresses of life have disappeared.
We can do all our duties in a shorter time, there are no crowds and there is no dirt. If we have a bad day at work we can sit by the sea, says Radwan.
After the revolution in Egypt, many tourist-related businesses closed down. Mina Naguib was raised in Sharm el Sheikh and later managed a construction company.
Naguib aims to promote Egyptians cooking and produce, and serves Egyptian food in his restaurant, Khaer Baledna.
After the revolution his company closed down, leaving him in limbo for a few years. His parents, who own a farm, were able to supply him with fresh produce, and he had always wanted to work with food and cooking.
Today he is preparing a birthday dinner for some local foreign residents, his main clients. Comparing his past corporate life with today's more basic life, he prefers the latter.
I was fed up with construction company work. It is the first sector in tourism to close and the last to pick up again. When the revolution started constructions were halted. As soon as an opportunity came to work with food I didn't think twice, Naguib says.
Every Friday a local market takes place merging all nationalities, foods and handicrafts. Locals come here to meet and spend money.
It is bisy place on Fridays and serves as a lifeline for those trying to get by in their new simple life.

Artists give Egyptian town a colourful makeover
A coastal town by Egypt's Red Sea is getting a colourful makeover.
Artists in Dahab are being encouraged to paint walls in public places.
Artists are at work, transforming this wall into an open-air art gallery.
Their paintings are displayed along one of Dahab's main roads and are seen by numerous drivers as they pass by.
This project aims to give the coastal town a vibrant new look.
The artists are not paid for the work but the town council supplies the paints and brushes they use.
Ahmed Rassam is a local Egyptian artist.
I spoke to the people in charge. They told me they will get the paint colours I need for the painting I want to make and that this is all for the love of Dahab and we all want it to be beautiful. To be honest I was very happy, he says.
Even the foreigners want to help. There's a foreigner over there drawing right now and there are more foreigners coming later on who will paint, he adds.
It's a multi-cultural project.
Rassam is joined by Dieter Loeffler, a Swiss artist who now lives in the town.
I would like see to Dahab like the pearl of Sinai. It needs to be different than all the other cities. We need colours here. We need much colours here. We are living in the middle of the desert, he says.
Italian Riccardo De Santis also paints here.
Normally graffiti expresses the soul of the people who live in the place where the graffiti is done, so it will be a very nice patch work I guess.
But the project is not the idea of the artists themselves.
This is the brainchild of town Mayor Emad Alwan, who's been in the job for less than a year.
His plan is to make Dahab more attractive.
And he's interested in working with people who have artistic talent.
Anyone with a good sense for art, painting or sculpting. I met with those living in Dahab - Arab and foreign artists - and told them I wanted to make Dahab beautiful with the project 'Colouring Dahab', he says.
And his idea is already a success.
The wall is getting a lot of attention and people often stop to take photographs.
Ali runs a food cart and has been a Dahab resident for 26 years.
We need to take care of our country so I thank once, twice, three and four times all those involved in these paintings, this beauty and this clean up.
The Red Sea town is well known for diving and other water sports.
But it's hoped the art could encourage people to visit the town of Dahab too.
Khaled Shrabas owns an art shop here.
He thinks the paintings help showcase what the town has to offer.
Through art we can make people conscious of the environment here, the tourism, the diving. We made an effort with these paintings and we want to show what kinds of tourism activities we have here, like windsurfing. And hopefully through this people will remember (Dahab), he says.
The current wall is due to be finished by 25 January.
The town council wants artists to paint other walls in Dahab too.
