The Best Diving in the World | Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Diving in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands was one of the most amazing experiences we have had. You have 3 diving companies on Rarotonga, Pacific Divers, The Dive Center the Big Fish and Rarotonga Divers. We visited both and made the decision to go with Pacific divers.
Diving in Rarotonga is very safe and affordable and the instructors are fantastic. The water visibility all year around is really good, it does vary slightly; However we found that it was always crystal clear and there was nothing to complain about. There is a ton of fish life including Hawksbill and Green turtles, White Tip and Grey Reef sharks, Napoleon Wrasse, Giant Moray, Giant Clams and the myriad of reef fish and invertebrates you’d expect to see on a coral reef.
There are a few different Diving spots in Rarotonga, in our experience some of The best dive sites in Rarotonga are noted below.
Maritime Reefer (24-30m) – Advanced Open Water Divers only. ...
Alberto's (6-12m) – Suitable for all divers. ...
The Caves (6-16m) – Suitable for all divers. ...
Jade Reef (16-26m) – Advanced Open Water Divers only. ...
Mataora Wreck (12-20m) – Suitable for all divers.
Meghan was already paid certified to dive, she did a refresher diving course and Quincy signed up to get his open water padi certification with pacific divers.
The Paid Certification took 4 days, the first day we were in the class room watching videos and writing exams. The second day we were in the pool, learning how to use the equipment, retrieve our goggles under water and some other important skills. The other two days were out diving in the ocean. We dived 3 different sites, our favourite diving site in Rarotonga was smurf city. We found two sharks hiding under neath some coral, our diving instructor went down deeper to get some video footage of them with our go pro. She ended up spooking the sharks and they swam towards us, they must have been 10ft + white tip sharks and it was the most amazing experience.
I highly recommend Rarotonga pacific divers, we had a ton of fun and it was the best diving we've ever experienced.

Survivor Cook Islands, may have exposed these beautiful islands to you, so if you are researching this place a holiday destination these travel videos will give you a good insight as to what you can get up to.
With such clear turquoise water and protected lagoons, the Cook Islands is the ultimate scuba dive destination, especially for those who have never dived before.
The Big Fish Dive Centre take their divers out to number of different sites depending on their experience and level of diving. For beginner divers or those who have never dived before they will take you for a dive in the shallow but fish filled lagoon out front of their shopfront. Being in shallow water takes away some of the initial hesitation people can have when going for their first dive so this is the perfect place to do it.
If you have any questions please leave a comment and we'll get back to you with an answer as soon as we can.
I hope you enjoy our videos from our television series INTO WATER & BEYOND.
COOK ISLANDS DIVING | Pacific Divers and Rarotonga Ghost Corals ????
Diving is one of the more exciting things to do on Cook Islands! I arranged a morning activity with Pacific Divers to do a Cook Islands Diving adventure.
The highlights of this diving in Cook Islands experience are the animal sightings - starting from the healthy coral reef, many different fishes and nudibranchs, sea turtles, and the Ghost Coral - this is a native species to the Cook Islands.
After the morning dive, I decided to have lunch at Trader Jacks - a locals favorite for pizza. I wanted to try Ika Mata, one of Cook Islands must try dishes.

Whitetip and grey reef sharks during their annual mating season in Avaavaroa Passage in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
This is one of our favorite sites and the best place in Rarotonga to see reef sharks. Between March and September, grey reef sharks come into the channel in packs of 10 to 30 individuals.

Rarotonga Underwater 2018 (Cook Islands) Diving/Spearfishing/Snorkelling
A video of us discovering the underwater world in Rarotonga, Cook Islands last winter (July 2018).
We went for a spearfish off the shore at the black rocks when we first arrived as it looked like the easiest to get out past the reef. As at many other places around the Island it is very difficult and dangerous to get outside the reef and here was no exception here with strong currents turning into a kind of outgoing waterfall. You had to be careful not to hit anything and just go with the flow. Once we got out it was great, very calm with amazing visibility. We encountered Barracuda, turtles and lots of other fish. Coming back in over the waterfall was tricky and you had to kick hard until you could hold on to something and pull your way in. We would not have managed without long freediving fins. I would not recommend doing this alone and take extreme care.
A few days later we jumped onboard with local fishing charter Akura Fishing Charters Rarotonga on a nice boat and explored some of the nearby FAD's where we ran into lots of Wahoo. We managed some nice 33kg Wahoo which we ate for the rest of our trip, giving away to the locals and also even brought some home to NZ. We only did a half day with 4 of us and had a blast - would highly recommend. You’ll need to be prepared with your gear if you’re wanting to shoot and land fish because they get very big. Hit us up if you’re planning a trip and need any gear or advice. dutchy's.co.nz
Trader Jacks Rarotonga is an interesting spot for a shore dive, with a wreck only a few hundred metres away from shore - it’s visible from the surface, so you can't miss it.
We had some fun times snorkelling inside the lagoons seeing loads of fish, turtles, clams, and coral. Muri beach is great spot, just stay clear of the passages where the water is going out of the lagoon and into the ocean, they have loads of current and there are loads of snorkelling charter operators such as Captain Tama's Lagoon Cruizes
